Drawing from the underpinning of complexity theory, this study investigates the complex causal interrelationships associated with knowledge hiding in the workplace. That is, we explore the interrelationships of individual-level factors: i) demographic characteristics (age, gender, education and experience), and ii) personality traits (i.e., Big-5 and the Dark Triad), and knowledge hiding behaviours. We collected data from 157 employees in the hospitality sector and analyzed by using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Our results highlighted multiple configurations of the demographic characteristics and personality traits (i.e., causal conditions) leading to knowledge hiding behaviours (i.e., outcome). Our findings revealed a total of 25 unique profiles combining personality traits and demographics factors–14 associated with the presence of knowledge hiding, and 11 linked to its absence. In particular, Machiavellianism emerged as a core condition driving the presence of knowledge hiding, while extraversion was identified as a core condition associated with its absence. This is the first-ever study comprehensively investigating distinct profiles resulting from the interplay between employees' personality traits and demographic factors associated with their knowledge hiding behaviour.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100666"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143562876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from 1,398 SME owners or top managers using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) research method. The results reveal significant differences in how male and female entrepreneurs perceive sustainable business growth from social, economic, and environmental perspectives. Male entrepreneurs consider the social impact of entrepreneurship to be more important compared to female entrepreneurs. A firm's digitalization level is the most important factor in determining the understanding of sustainable business growth for both genders. However, female entrepreneurs do not consider a firm's perception of customers and knowledge from new sources using digitalization to have a significant effect. Customers’ perception of the firm using digitalization is the most crucial indicator for male entrepreneurs regarding sustainable growth as a construct that determines the social system and environmental aspects. Conversely, female entrepreneurs consider knowledge from new sources using digitalization and risk mitigation as the most important indicators. These findings contribute to a comprehensive knowledge of the gendered implications of digital transformation and provide valuable inputs for policies and practitioners aiming to strengthen the inclusive character of the digital economy in SMEs.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100681"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143511681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firms in 266 projects 2009–2012 were tracked for Standard Industrial Code (SIC), location and year-on-year financial performance 2012–22. The results show that firms (un- and co-funded) were mainly not local to universities. The growth performance of non-funded firms was steady in the majority of SIC codes, but some SIC codes performed very well, while for co-funded firms, many SICs performed under control but losses were made up for on average by exceptionally high performance in other SIC codes. Overall, non-funded firms achieved average growth of ∼29 % above control while co-funded firms only achieved an average growth of ∼18 % above control. Firms (both co- and un-funded) associated with 21 universities perform consistently well, while other firms (co- and un-funded) associated with 24 other universities perform consistently poorly. This difference in performance was better correlated to degree of business ambidexterity in the tech transfer function, rather than with university reputation.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100679"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143488642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By analysing the impact of ICTs on well-being across nations, this study explores an essential aspect of technology innovation's role in improving individuals' overall quality of life—covering both subjective and objective well-being. This study aims to analyse the influence of ICTs on well-being while considering the moderating effect of gender inequality. The research uses panel data from 185 countries covering the years 2005 to 2021 to explore the relationship between ICTs and well-being concerning gender inequality, using both subjective (e.g., life satisfaction) and objective (e.g., prosperity) well-being indicators. The objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between ICTs and well-being, focusing on the moderating role of gender inequality. The findings suggest that there is a positive correlation between ICT impact and well-being, which is amplified as gender inequality decreases. These findings held consistent when using different measures of objective well-being and introducing new variables for comparison. The study offers valuable insights into the role of gender equality – an essential component of social innovation - in upholding the positive effects of ICTs on well-being, assessed from both subjective and objective perspectives.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100680"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143488643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we focus on these aspects in the context of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) system, and a proposed intervention under the Smart City Mission, in the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka. The paper aims to grasp the current functionality and structure of the SWM system, and the role of different actors and their interactions in sustaining it. We employ qualitative methods such as participant-observation-based ethnography, interviews, focus group discussions, and review of documents related to the intervention, to understand the inner workings of the system and the potential disruption from the intervention. We adopt a complex adaptive systems framework to analyze our findings and highlight a set of design requirements and principles that must be acknowledged and incorporated into the proposed intervention to ensure the resilience of the SWM system. We also present practical implications for Information System (IS) designers by recommending relevant design features for the Smart City Intervention (SCI), drawing upon the features of an existing digital public infrastructure whose architecture is underpinned by a similar set of design principles identified in our study. Additionally, we discuss pertinent policy implications in the context of effectively governing the SWM system alongside the intervention, building on the design implications.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100661"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143480062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While much of the existing literature focuses on procedural aspects of innovation, the human factors that influence success are often overlooked. The Lead User Method is designed to identify key contributors based on their ability to stay ahead of market trends and realize significant benefits. However, it has been criticized for inadequacies in its identification process. To address this gap, our study distinguishes seven key personal characteristics of medical lead users that are essential for successful co-created new product development. Through case studies and semi-structured interviews, we demonstrate that engaging lead users throughout the new product development process—regardless of product complexity—enhances product-market fit and profitability. Their involvement becomes increasingly critical as the process advances, particularly during the market diffusion phase. Our research refines the Lead User Method's identification process and provides actionable insights for decision-makers, reducing uncertainty in medical device innovation while lowering development costs and time and increasing product-market fit and profitability.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100677"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143474468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grounded in diffusion of innovation theory, this study examines how digital competencies, technology absorptive capacity, and strategic value influence the adoption of intelligent automation. Using a quantitative approach, the findings reveal that digital competencies do not directly impact intelligent automation implementation, but exert an indirect influence through technology absorptive capacity and strategic value. Technology absorptive capacity emerges as a critical enabler facilitating the assimilation and application of the external knowledge necessary for intelligent automation integration, whereas strategic value plays a significant role in aligning intelligent automation adoption with organisational goals. These results emphasise the importance of absorptive and strategic capacities in bridging the gap between digital readiness and intelligent automation. This study highlights that successful intelligent automation adoption requires a multifaceted approach that integrates technological, organisational, and strategic considerations. Although intelligent automation offers substantial potential to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness, its adoption remains resource-intensive, necessitating investments in digital capabilities, training, and stakeholder engagement. This research also underscores the need for a human-centric approach to address employee concerns and align intelligent automation with broader organisational strategies. This study contributes to the literature on digital transformation and automation by providing empirical evidence of the determinants of intelligent automation implementation and their interplay. These findings offer insights for managers, policymakers, and researchers and pave the way for more effective and sustainable adoption strategies for intelligent automation. This study investigated the law's impact on enterprise green development resilience (EGDR) through a novel integration of institutional and resource-based theories. Employing the Vertical and Horizontal Slot-Drawing (VHSD) and entropy methods, we developed a comprehensive framework to systematically measure EGDR, capturing both dynamic and structural aspects of resilience. Our findings revealed that, from an institutional perspective, compliance with environmental laws enhances corporate legitimacy and fosters green development. Meanwhile, the resource-based view highlighted how NEPL improves EGDR by promoting green knowledge, stimulating green innovation, offering policy incentives, and easing financial constraints. Notably, the law's effectiveness varies across regions and technological contexts, underscoring significant heterogeneity. These findings uncovered previously unexplored mechanisms linking environmental law enforcement and enterprise resilience, providing actionable insights for policymakers to design more effective environmental strategies. Thus, the pursuit of environmental sustainability has become a global imperative as countries increasingly adopt measures to enhance their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Moreover, an effective system of financial support is needed. This paper aims to assess the impact of green finance on the environmental dimension of ESG performance in European Union (EU) countries from 2008 to 2020. The study applies the following methods: (1) a spatial Durbin model to examine the relationship between green finance and environmental performance within the EU context and (2) entropy methods to assess the environmental dimension of ESG performance. The findings reveal that green finance initiatives play a significant role in driving positive environmental outcomes within a country's ESG performance. By channeling financial resources toward environmentally friendly projects and businesses, green finance facilitates the transition to a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy. It enables the implementation of renewable energy projects, energy efficiency improvements, sustainable infrastructure development, and ecosystem preservation efforts. These initiatives contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change risks, conserving natural resources, and protecting biodiversity.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 2","pages":"Article 100674"},"PeriodicalIF":15.6,"publicationDate":"2025-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143420764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
