Addressing major gaps in prior research—including the lack of EU-focused, longitudinal analyses and limited alignment between theoretical claims, and empirical testing—the study applies a two-stage design. In the first stage, multiple regression analysis identifies indulgence (IND) as a robust, statistically significant predictor of innovation performance, while individualism (IDV) gains significance only in a reduced model, despite extant literature. In the second stage, t-tests demonstrate that neither IND nor IDV significantly distinguishes countries that improved their innovation group ranking between 2017 and 2024. These findings indicate that while permissive and individualistic cultures are associated with higher baseline innovation capacity, they do not drive innovation advancement over time. Thus, cultural values represent important but not decisive structural elements within national innovation systems. Long-term progress appears to be more strongly shaped by other factors; for instance, institutional, political, and structural conditions. Consequently, innovation policies should be culturally informed rather than culturally determined—recognising the role of culture without overemphasising its influence.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 5","pages":"Article 100791"},"PeriodicalIF":15.5,"publicationDate":"2025-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144913037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study employs Bayesian model averaging and random forest methodologies to analyse how environmental innovation impacts the market value of European companies in the industrial and information technology (IT) sectors, taking into account firms’ existing performance levels. The findings reveal significant differences in the factors driving valuation in the two sectors: environmental product scores positively influence market value for overvalued industrial companies, and profitability is the primary determinant of value for IT firms. There are distinct patterns between overvalued and undervalued companies in both sectors. Financial leverage and governance quality are more important for undervalued firms in the industrial sector; market risk plays a bigger role for their counterparts in the IT sector. Environmental variables are only moderately important determinants of value when compared to financial metrics, but their influence varies by firm sector and performance. These results empirically demonstrate that the relationship between environmental innovation and financial value is highly context-dependent. For corporate managers, the findings suggest that a sector-specific and performance-targeted approach to environmental innovation is required. For policymakers, they suggest regulatory frameworks should be tailored to economic sectors and support environmental innovation by firms in the short run before expecting long-term benefits.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 5","pages":"Article 100790"},"PeriodicalIF":15.5,"publicationDate":"2025-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144902892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study pioneers an investigation by systematically examining how strategic alliances enhance the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of firms. Utilizing a balanced panel dataset of Chinese industrial listed firms (2012–2022), the results confirm that participation in strategic alliances significantly promotes firms’ GTFP. Based on the dynamic capabilities theory, the mediation analysis reveals that enhancing the green cognition of firms’ senior management and local (rather than national) standard-setting levels serves as a critical mechanism through which alliances elevate GTFP. Consistent with the Porter hypothesis, the moderation analysis identifies stringent environmental regulation as catalytic institutional forces amplifying alliance effectiveness in improving GTFP. Furthermore, heterogeneity analyses across regions and industries delineate boundary conditions, emphasizing the significant impact of external environments and sectoral conditions on green transformation, moving beyond universal claims of “whether alliances matter” towards exploring “where and why they matter most.” This study contributes to the theoretical research on strategic alliances and the circular economy. Moreover, it offers valuable insights for firms’ decision makers to leverage alliance networks for innovating circular business models and for policymakers to optimize environmental governance frameworks for circular transition.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 5","pages":"Article 100783"},"PeriodicalIF":15.5,"publicationDate":"2025-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144902891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dependent variable, fraud risk, is proxied by the Beneish M-Score. The independent variables examined comprise six key audit characteristics: the existence of an audit committee, audit committee financial expertise, audit fees, mandatory auditor rotation, the reporting line of the internal audit function, and external assurance of non-financial reports. The theoretical framework integrates agency theory and stakeholder/legitimacy theory, suggesting that both traditional and innovative audit mechanisms may deter financial misreporting. Methodologically, the panel Estimated Generalised Least Squares method with cross-sectional weights was employed. Empirical results show that all the considered audit characteristics significantly affect fraud risk in the expected direction. In particular, traditional agency-based mechanisms (audit committee presence, financial expertise, and lower audit fees) and legitimacy-driven innovative practices (auditor regular rotation, independent internal audit reporting, and external non-financial reporting assurance) are each associated with lower fraud risk. These relationships remain robust when using an alternative statistical technique (Generalised Method of Moments) and a different measure for the dependent variable. This study uses panel data from 279 cities in China from 2011 to 2022 to measure the circular economy development index in four key dimensions: production systems, living systems, development momentum, and development benefits. Combining panel fixed effect, mediation effect, spatial econometric, and threshold models, we quantify the mechanism of the impact of digital technology innovation on the circular economy and analyze its spatial spillover effects. The results show that digital technology innovation significantly promotes the development of the circular economy in Chinese cities by reducing energy consumption intensity and promoting industrial structure upgrading. Moreover, digital technology innovation has a spatial spillover effect on the circular economy and promotes the development of the circular economy in surrounding cities through the “demonstration effect.” Heterogeneity analysis of geographical location and resource endowment shows that digital technology innovation plays the most significant role in promoting the circular economy in eastern, central, and non-resource-based cities. In addition, with digital technology innovation and natural resource dependence as threshold variables, the impact of digital technology innovation on the circular economy shows the characteristics of a U-shaped relationship and a marginal decline, respectively. These findings have multiple theoretical implications. Our support for a broad framework for comprehensively evaluating the impact of digital technology innovation on circular economy development makes a significant contribution to the literature on digital technology and the circular economy. This study emphasizes the digitalization of urban sustainable development and provides practical guidance for policymakers on implementing differentiated decisions related to the circular economy. Using data from China's A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2023, this study examines the influence of government digital subsidies on corporate digital technology innovation and its underlying mechanisms. Government digital subsidies are identified using the BERT language model. Meanwhile, International Patent Classification information is employed to discern digital patents, as a measure of corporate digital technology innovation. The findings reveal that government digital subsidies significantly stimulate corporate digital technology innovation, with this result remaining robust across multiple robustness checks and endogeneity controls. Mechanism analysis reveals three mechanisms: alleviating financing constraints, enhancing R&amp;D willingness, and strengthening digital strategic deployment. Furthermore, government digital subsidies have significantly stronger effects on digital strategic deployment in firms with a CEO who has an IT background and firms with a high level of artificial intelligence application. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the incentive effects are more pronounced in non-state-owned, growth stage, small firms, and firms located in regions with higher marketization levels or digital economic policy intensity. Further analysis shows that digital subsidies effectively promote both digital technology integration and pure digital technology innovations. However, digital innovation quality is negatively affected. This stems from the perverse “quantity-oriented” incentives of subsidies, which drives firms to prioritize application volume over technical depth. These findings contribute to government digital subsidy and digital innovation research while providing important implications for managers to achieve sustainability in the digital transformation context.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 5","pages":"Article 100797"},"PeriodicalIF":15.5,"publicationDate":"2025-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144893901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on these analyses, the return of digitalization (ROD) ratio is developed to assess the effects of digital transformation. In the second stage, a panel data analysis is conducted to examine the impact of digitalization and the ROD ratio on a firm’s performance. The research findings clearly indicate that digital transformation generates positive effects on firms’ financial performance. It also appears that digitalization provides a competitive advantage, particularly in areas such as operational efficiency and brand value. A SWOT matrix distils convergent concerns—weaponised disinformation, privacy erosion, and the detection arms race—alongside under-explored opportunities in education, therapy, and creative industries. To test whether these scholarly themes resonate with citizens, a computer-assisted web survey (N = 7,083) measured perceived risks and benefits across 10 specific scenarios for each theme. Correspondence analysis and Bonferroni-adjusted means reveal a pronounced age gradient for benefits, whereas risk perceptions vary by country—younger cohorts are noticeably less alarmed only in Sweden, France, and Czechia. Geographically, Dutch, German, British, and Italian publics prove the most enthusiastic: the United Kingdom (UK) couples similar enthusiasm with markedly higher risk vigilance, whereas Czech and Swedish respondents remain consistently sceptical, underscoring a broad, though imperfect, west/south versus central/north divide. The Netherlands, Germany, the UK, and Italy value pro-social applications (i.e., realistic crisis drills, public-interest campaigns, and therapeutic ‘mental-health’ avatars), with the Netherlands topping four benefit items and Italy favouring commercial/entertainment uses such as virtual brand ambassadors. By contrast, Czech and Swedish respondents assign uniformly low benefit scores. Juxtaposed with risk perceptions, the UK and Czechia register the greatest vigilance, Sweden the most relaxed, and others intermediate. Divergence seems associated with digital literacy levels and regulatory maturity. The survey reveals a statistically and practically significant gap between perceived risks and benefits: across all seven countries, respondents, on average, rate risks higher than advantages. Regression estimates indicate that advancing age, lower household income, and gender (woman) enlarge this gap—primarily by undermining perceived benefits—whereas tertiary education and residence in certain western or southern European countries—notably, Germany and Italy—are associated with more balanced appraisals. This study concludes that layered governance, interoperable detection standards, and targeted literacy programmes are urgently required.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46792,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovation & Knowledge","volume":"10 5","pages":"Article 100782"},"PeriodicalIF":15.5,"publicationDate":"2025-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144888655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
