On the one hand, it investigates what possibilities there are to find open online support discussions for Finland-Swedish family care partners of people living with dementia. On the other hand, it analyzes how support is expressed in those open discussions that can be found. The data of the study consist of two subsets: web pages and social media accounts of dementia care providers and Swedish-language media in Finland especially, and nine open Facebook threads with discussions on dementia expressing support to family care partners of people living with dementia. The first dataset is analyzed utilizing a passive nethnographic method. Focusing on expressions of emphatic communication, the second dataset is analyzed using content analysis and coded with the mixed methods software MAXQDA. As the results show, it is difficult to find open online channels for support discussions on dementia in Swedish in Finland. At the same time, the discussions that can be found convey how important they are to those participating in them. The availability of open online support discourses provides additional comfort and help to those living with dementia and their care partners. However, there are few formal models of how commenters orient their messages to each other to create online discourse. We introduce the concept of a ‘discourse space’—a novel conceptual framework that serves as an abstract meta-representation of discourse. It provides an opportunity to quantify discourse and explore its dynamics by leveraging a range of possible discourse strategies, spanning four key aspects: cohesion, attitude, logic quality and coherence. With this view, discourse strategies emerge as generalised techniques for linguistically shaping thoughts based on the social context. To construct an empirical space from real data, 1,684 message pairs from 50 YouTube video comment sections were tagged for 25 discourse strategies. Using an advanced dimension-reduction method (t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding, t-SNE), we demonstrate that a systematic discourse space can be constructed from the data. Specifically, the relations between individual social media messages can be positioned within the discourse space and that messages which attempt to derail the discourse occupy a specific part of this space. When using this platform to disseminate their own findings, scholars need to recontextualize their published research to make it suitable for a wide audience. However, despite the potential of this website for improving science literacy, there is little research on the strategies used to render scientific knowledge comprehensible for the general audience. This article studies the recontextualization strategies that researchers utilize to facilitate understanding when reporting their own research in <em>The Conversation</em>. For this purpose, we analyze a dataset consisting of 50 Environment articles. Adopting a multimodal perspective, we propose an analytical framework that can account for the various semiotic resources employed to aid comprehensibility. We analyze the frequency, function and formal features of the following elements that facilitate understanding: (i) verbal in-text elaboration (exemplification, reformulation, definition, analogy and explicitation); (ii) visuals; and (iii) hyperlinks to supplementary information. The results show that the technological features of <em>The Conversation</em> (e.g., hyperlinking, multimodal embedding) shape how researchers adapt and reframe their discourse, enabling a distinctive form of knowledge dissemination. Investigating the observable online interactions on social media platforms can shed light on sociolinguistic realities of language including the complexity and fluidity of everyday linguistic forms and communicative contexts. Drawing on mediated discourse analysis, this study explores the process of metapragmatic meaning making in a viral YouTube video from the channel “English with Lucy” that focuses on teaching English to speakers of other languages. In the video the channel host presents sociopragmatic knowledge and tips about appropriate responses to the speech act of thanking drawing on mediational means such as language (e.g., intonation, degrees of formality), social actors, communication contexts, and age in explaining different ways of responding to thanks. The metapragmatic commentary reveals alternative responses demonstrating variation across temporal, spatial and personal dimensions. On the dementia-related subreddit r/Dx, discussions of death are frequent and central, particularly among the most engaged posts. While death and loss are often perceived taboo in offline discourse, caregivers express faceted thoughts related to the topic in this digitally mediated discourse, finding empathy and understanding from the other users in return. This study analyzes the discursive construction of death-related experience through the lens of deictic and non-deictic reference. Drawing from 100 top-voted Reddit threads, the analysis explores how users employ personal, spatial, and temporal references to position themselves, navigate their caregiving role at the online-offline nexus and negotiate their roles within the community after the death of the person cared for. While death marks the end of the offline care role, it also alters the care partner’s role in the online sphere, either marking the user’s exit from the community, or contrarily emphasizing the continued involvement therein. Graphic medicine, a part of narrative medicine, uses or creates comics to explore medical issues which have often been experienced by their authors. Each full set of caregiver guides comprises twenty short, mediated dialogues between caregivers about frequently occurring issues in early and mid-stage dementia communications. These are sets of vignettes involving actions, activities and artifacts that suggest a range of relationships.
