Using panel data from prefecture-level cities in China spanning 2006 to 2020, this study treats the NEDC pilot program as a quasi-natural experiment. A theoretical mechanism analysis was conducted to explore the implications of the NEDC pilot program on urban LRCC, and the propensity score matching double-difference method was used to estimate its effects. The findings show that the NEDC pilot program significantly inhibits the enhancement of urban LRCC, a conclusion that remains robust after multiple validity tests. Moreover, as the level of green development in urban land increases, the impact of the NEDC pilot program on urban LRCC shifts from positive to negative. This negative effect is especially pronounced in regions with lower levels of urban informatization, as well as in central and western areas and large cities. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis indicates that the NEDC pilot program exerts a significant negative influence on urban LRCC through three main channels: technological innovation, industrial structure, and economic correlation.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45743,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Journal of Population Resources and Environment","volume":"23 4","pages":"Pages 579-589"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145847674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address RISA heterogeneity among regions, those lacking a spatial concentration in non-resource industries are excluded from the analysis. We then develop an econometric model of regional economic growth (REG) using RISA. To further investigate the impact mechanisms of RISA and other factors influencing REG, we use the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) method and the system generalized method of moments (SGMM). Conducting a stepwise regression analysis, we systematically examine the effect of the resource curse at the regional level from a RISA perspective. Our key findings are as follows: ① Fifteen provinces in China exhibit RISA, and their level of economic development is significantly lower than that of provinces without a spatial agglomeration of resource industries. ② RISA and REG exhibit a “U-shaped” relationship, characterized initially by suppression followed by promotion. ③ In terms of transmission mechanisms, investments in material and human capital, the degree of openness to foreign trade, and residents’ savings rate all suppress RISA, while investments in technological innovation, development of the private economy and the manufacturing industry, and government intervention can promote spatial agglomeration of resource industries.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45743,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Journal of Population Resources and Environment","volume":"23 4","pages":"Pages 570-578"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145847673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CCUS approach is to form part of the Integrated Resource Plan as one of the critical aspects of the country’s energy mix. This puts CCUS at the forefront of the adoption of clean energy initiatives. This paper reviews the progress on CCUS initiatives in South Africa since the publication of the 2010 technical report on the geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) with a focus on onshore sequestration. The focus is on the current status, future opportunities, and the possibility of developing numerical models and simulations of various South African coal ranks to simulate CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration potential with reference to the related literature. The paper also delves into the ongoing Leandra pilot CCS demonstration project in Mpumalanga Province, the status of the identified unmineable coalfields available for CCS in South Africa, collaborations, and future prospects for CCS in the country. The purpose is to contribute to advancing the local CCS technology and mitigating anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. Through this review paper, it is established that promoting the advancement and implementation of CCS in South Africa requires continuous advanced research activities from scholars and private and government institutions because of the critical need to understand the fluid induced response of geological formations, especially coal formations, for the secure and effective application of this sequestration method.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45743,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Journal of Population Resources and Environment","volume":"23 3","pages":"Pages 372-385"},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144933909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uniquely contributes to the literature by employing the planetary pressures-adjusted human development index (PHDI) as an indicator of GHD, which integrates environmental impacts into human development. Using static and dynamic econometric methods, including the quantile regression and autoregressive distributed lag model, it explores the impacts of renewable and nonrenewable energy consumption on GHD. The findings demonstrate that renewable energy currently has a detrimental impact on GHD due to its limited adoption and high costs. Conversely, nonrenewable energy positively influences GHD, as it is the primary energy source in the country and is becoming more efficient at reducing emissions. However, the study finds that greater use of renewable energy reduces its adverse effects, suggesting that as renewable energy technologies become more cost-effective and widely implemented, their initial adverse effects could be mitigated, leading to improved long-term GHD outcomes. These findings carry important implications for Indonesia, where the government is striving to expand renewable energy capacity while promoting equitable development across its archipelagic regions. To achieve Goal 6 of the UN-initiated 17 SDGs, it is crucial to determine the spatial distribution of groundwater prospective zones village-by-village, with 1/3 of the regions falling under red alert zones for sustainable development. The 16 most crucial elements affecting groundwater prospective zones (GWPZs) were mapped using AHP, and the final prospective map was obtained through Weighted Overlay analysis. The study identified five different classes within the Sub-watershed as excellent, good, moderate, poor, and very poor. This study uses Malaysia as a case study to evaluate the readiness of developing nations to implement amendments, highlighting transferable solutions and recommendations. This study employs a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative thematic analysis and bibliometric mapping to analyze academic literature, official reports, and international case studies. The findings reveal that while Malaysia has foundational policies in place, significant challenges remain in addressing informal recycling practices, improving enforcement mechanisms, and building the institutional capacity to implement PIC procedures effectively. This study identifies key areas for improvement, including regulatory reforms, infrastructure development, and enhanced monitoring systems. To address these issues, this study proposes a six-key Integrated Decision Framework that emphasizes legislative and regulatory updates, infrastructure development, international cooperation, capacity building and training, public awareness and engagement, and robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms. Using manually collected bank loan relationship data and financial data of Chinese listed companies from 2010 to 2021, our findings reveal that BEDA significantly enhances borrowers’ ESG performance. Moreover, this effect is more pronounced when banks have a higher information demand, better internal controls, and share auditors with borrowers; when borrowers operate in environmentally sensitive industries, and in the period following the Paris Agreement signing. Among the individual ESG subcategories, the impact of BEDA on borrowers’ ESG performance is primarily reflected in environmental (E) and social (S) considerations. Finally, we do not find that BEDA significantly suppresses banks’ greenwashing. These findings indicate that BEDA has an informational or advisory influence on banks’ ESG governance rather than a supervisory role at this stage of sustainability reporting development. However, this approach has often positioned China as more of a doer than a talker, leading to insufficient recognition in the international community. Domestic Chinese research has frequently highlighted these issues within the ecological civilization, especially in its global dimension. Building on existing research, this study contends that the disparity in recognition stems from three crucial gaps: a conceptual gap between ecological civilization as a new narrative and established international governance frameworks; a practical gap between how China’s ecological civilization advances sustainable development governance versus international understanding; and a communication gap between its substantial achievements and inadequate communication of these experiences. To address these gaps, this paper recommends that China strengthen its efforts in three key areas: First, maintain strategic resolve by deepening green practices and strengthening corporate environmental standards to advance green norms. Second, promote the global co-construction of ecological civilization and strengthen global governance featuring extensive consultation and joint contributions for shared benefits. Third, enhance fairness, representativeness, and inclusiveness in international sustainable development negotiations. Finally, China, along with Global South countries, should continue advancing global ecological civilization.
