Two kinds of opening, circular and square, with different sizes and positions and two aspect ratios of 1:1 and 3:1 are considered in the simulations.Design/methodology/approachThis study presents a novel TSCSW and compares its behavior with the existing CSPSW under the effect of monotonic and cyclic loadings. TSCSW is composed of three corrugated steel plates filled with concrete. The two external side plates are connected to the concrete core by means of several intermediate fasteners and the third one is an inner steel plate embedded within the concrete panel. The internal plate is a buckling restrained plate surrounded by concrete. This is the main superiority of TSCSW over other kinds of existing composite shear walls.FindingsThe results show that the shear capacity and the energy dissipation capacity of the proposed composite wall, TSCSW, are respectively about 16 and 12% higher than those of CSPSW when there is no opening. If an opening is considered in the wall, as the size of the opening is increased, the shear capacity, stiffness, ductility and absorbed energy of the two walls are decreased similarly. The destructive effect of square openings on the performance of the walls is more than that of circular openings.Originality/valueThis is an original work.","PeriodicalId":45359,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Structural Integrity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2022-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41831073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different forms of cavitation were identified, and their shape and size (length and width) were dictated from reciprocating speed and viscosity of the lubricant. Cavitation degrades performance in engineering applications and its effect is that it alters the oil film pressure.Design/methodology/approachLubricant formulations were used for parametric study as well as different operating testing parameters in a simulating test rig and single cylinder engines with visualisation windows. An algorithm was used for extracting cavitation data from imaging, and comparison was made.FindingsSimilar phenomena at the simulating test rig and the engine were investigated and compared. The effect of different operating conditions was assessed along with the variations produced from the parametric lubricant study.Research limitations/implicationsEngine results are limited due to manufacturing difficulties of visualisation windows and oil starvation. Firing tests are another difficult challenge as the modified section pressure is under more pressure and the window view is affected by combustion process. Limited pictures can be captured before cleaning is required. A lubricant manufacturer has to provide data regarding the chemistry of the lubricants.Originality/valueThe effect of cavitation in piston ring lubrication along with variable operating and lubricant parameters is further studied with quantification of cavitation results through image processing. These forms of cavities are affected by lubricant properties and operating conditions. A link between viscosity, cavitation, shear thinning properties, oil film thickness (OFT) and friction is given.","PeriodicalId":45359,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Structural Integrity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2022-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47213548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aims to identify the characteristic divergence in fracture – evaluating testing methods, i.e. three-point bend test and wedge splitting test for fibrous self-compacting concrete.Design/methodology/approachA total of nine mixes with three different coarse aggregate sizes (20, 16 and 12.5mm) and three coarse to fine aggregate quantities (40–60, 45–55 and 50–50) were considered to examine the influence of materials on fracture parameters of fibrous self-compacting concrete. For three-point bend test, size effect method was considered to analyze the fracture properties.FindingsThe experimental investigation revealed that fracture energy calculated from wedge splitting test was reasonably on higher side for maximum coarse aggregate-based specimens for all coarse to fine aggregate quantities, while for the size effect method, fracture energy value was maximum for least coarse aggregate sized specimens.Originality/valueThe fracture properties of fibrous self-compacting concrete obtained from wedge splitting test method was higher than the size effect method. This is due to the consideration of only peak load for determining the fracture properties in size effect method analysis.","PeriodicalId":45359,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Structural Integrity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2022-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44932588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further efforts on better understanding in early stage of a crack are beneficial to estimating and preventing catastrophic damage for a long period service.Design/methodology/approachDependent on the ultrasonic loading system, a novel method of in situ photomicroscope is established to study the crack behaviors in VHCF regime.FindingsThis in situ photomicroscope method provides advantages in combination with fatigue damage monitoring at high magnification, a large number of cycles, and efficiency. Visional investigation with attached image proceeding code proves that the method has high resolution on both size and time, which permits reliable accuracy on small crack growth rate. It is observed that the crack propagation trends slower in the overall small crack stage down to the level of 10–11 m/cycle. Strain analysis relays on a real-time recording which is applied by using digital image correlation. Infrared camera recording indicates the method is also suitable for thermodynamic study while growth of damage.Originality/valueBenefiting from this method, it is more convenient and efficient to study the short crack propagation in VHCF regime.","PeriodicalId":45359,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Structural Integrity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2022-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49352841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic changes in the loading conditions of the structure, and the variability of the underlying ground due to environmental changes, are causing the undesirable differential settlement, which is manifested in the form of additional stresses in beams, columns and distortion of the structure elements. The structural response to the differential settlements depends on the type of the structure (concrete or steel), type of beam-to-column connections (rigid or semi-rigid), number of floors and the spans of the beams in the building. This paper presents the results of a numerical model, which was developed using the finite element technique and the software “ABAQUS” to analyze a nine-floor steel structure. The model was capable to capture the stresses and the strains developed in beams and columns and the relationships of moment–settlement and rotation–settlement for the structural during the differential settlement of its foundation. After validating of the model, data were produced for a wide range of governing parameters for rigid and semi-rigid connections and accordingly the mode of failure. The results can be used as a guideline for the design of steel structures.FindingsResults are useful for those design steel structures.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on the experimental and numerical data of the authors.Practical implicationsThis study provides a guideline for the design of steel structures.Originality/valueThis is the original research developed by the authors.","PeriodicalId":45359,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Structural Integrity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2021-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46048014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vast majority of the considered beams are over-reinforced, compression-controlled. The data of the fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) reinforced with GFRP bars are collected from three published research studies which are based on experimentally tested results.
