Shevyrev’s poems for children that had been written in 1857–1858. These years were hard for the poet; the majority of magazines were rejecting his works. The reason for this was S. P. Shevyrev’s run-in with gr. V. A. Bobrinsky (cousin of Alexander II), which turned into a fist-fight. In 1857–1858 his poems regularly appeared only in two magazines: “Zvezdochka” and “Luchi, a magazine for girls”, published by A. O. Ishimova for the schoolgirls of noble boarding schools. The article considers two themes in S. P. Shevyrev’s poems for children. He was writing religious poems for the children who were thoroughly familiar with the Bible and that allowed him to keep complexity of his plots. His second theme was the working life of Russian peasantry, which he depicted with exceptional love. S. P. Shevyrev in his poems always merges deep piety of Russian peasants and their hard labors. The author shows how contemporary children’s poetry is linked with the traditional one (and also some folklore forms), characterizes the creative styles of several contemporary poets (J. Twardowski, Z. Beszczyńska, J. Kulmowa, W. Oszajca), and points out several breaks from the tradition. The author names two main streams in children’s contemporary poetry as “Lyric poetry” and “Playing with words”, and speaks in detail of their creative approaches and readers’ pragmatics. Especially interesting is the comparison of contemporary children’s poetry samples and the classical ones (Jan Brzechwa, Janina Porazińska, Maria Konopnicka, Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina, Julian Tuwim), and also linking with the tradition of religious and ritual poetry. The use of artistic devices typical for fairytales is discussed in the article in a frame of the possibility of making historical information attractive and understandable for a young reader, even in such difficult cases as wars, political repressions, or authoritarian governments. This way the authors of books discussed in the article are able to tell much more about the essence of historical events and/or to create the conditions for understanding of the political organization of the society than if they would stay strictly with the realistic genres. New science fiction inherits and transforms traditions and conventions of Soviet “science fiction” (nauchnaya fantastica). The emergence of market relations in the “field of literature” provoked an identity crisis, also initiating various attempts to redefine the boundaries between science fiction and previously closely related discourses, including children’s literature. This article, using several works by S. Lukyanenko as an example, examines how this rhetorical strategy has been implemented within science fiction texts. At the level of motifs and themes, references to sexuality and violence (especially in child-adult relations), tabooed in children’s literature, play a significant part in categorizing Lukyanenko’s novels as adult literature. In the system of typical of SF generic conventions this presents the depicted world as the harsh reality, thus creating a realistic effect. Markers of the second type point to historical dimensions of the fictional world, and this technique invokes conventions of “serious” (i.e. adult) speculative fiction. Also the references to iconic science fiction texts show that the novels are intended for adults and not for children. A. Gershenzon, Soviet children’s writer, translator and editor. In 1927 he translated and revised the novel by German writer H. Dominik “John Workman. From newsboy to millionaire” (1909–1925). The article examines the reasons why it was expected, considering all Gershenzon’s works, that the novel will appeal to him. The author of the article analyzes the goals and results of Gershenzon’s strategy as the translator: in this case it consisted more than in careful editing and serious alteration of the plot of the book written by an ideologically distant author. The analysis involves eleven issues of Pioneer magazine (1927), where the translated novel “John Workman” had been published and also accompanied by an avant-garde photographic design by the artist G. Berendhof. The work of M. A. Gershenzon is compared both with the original text by H. Dominik and with the translation by Y. The collection of essays displays a variety of approaches, which allows the reader to tackle this issue from very different points of view. Particular attention is paid to the re-creation and re-mediation of fairy tales according to different narrative media, from oral story to musical theater, from cinema to picture books. R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings that creates “the depth effect”: texts’ insertion. The article’s author analyzes an insert text from the second part of the prologue (“The Herblore of the Shire”) and its integration in the main plot of the novel, and also looks into interchanges between the main text and insert ones, and Meriadoc’s role as one of the secondary narrators. The Lord of the Rings is full of insert texts of various genres and “The Herblore of the Shire” is merely one of them, but it shows that such texts are not isolated and not limited to single occasions. Throughout the novel they serve as quotations that link different plot episodes and organize them around the image of the secondary narrator. Since the second half of the 19th century this notion was coined in the English literature, it has been radically changing its meaning. Lewis Carroll called his two books about Alice’s adventures “a picture book”, whereas contemporary scholars would refrain from relating these stories to this notion. Artistic experimentation in picturebook form and content throughout the entire 20th century blurs the boundaries of graphic literature genres that fuels the discussions about picturebook’s belonging to literature or visual art, and about its definition as a particular art. In the first place picturebook develops as a literary genre with distinctive features: polysystemic unity of illustration and text, a specific layout of text and image, age peculiarities of readers, structural distinctions of illustration, and some others. However, works of graphic literature stand out for having the similar features which prevent from differentiating them from each other. A handful of scholars initiate the development of wholistic theory of sequential art without dividing the graphical literature into subsets. The other researchers advancing attempts to define the picturebook paused the investigation of its formal features and began the survey on the peculiarities of reading situations anticipated to be different graphic literature genres.
