Das","doi":"10.51983/ijiss.2019.9.2.633","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.51983/ijiss.2019.9.2.633","url":null,"abstract":"The present study was conducted in 20 college libraries of Darjeeling district of West Bengal to analyze the use of library resources and services by student users. The survey research method using structured questionnaires was adopted for the collection of data from the users. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed randomly to the users, out of which 364 completely filled-in questionnaires were received back and included in the analysis. The findings reveal that majority of student users visit the college libraries on a regular basis mainly for the purpose of burrowing and returning library books. Most of the college libraries have easily accessible location, good layout, sufficient lighting & ventilation and neat & clean premises. The college libraries are mostly having the collection of text books but the collection of journals/magazines is found to be inadequate in many college libraries. It has been found that only few college libraries offer open access to all documents, electronic information resources, daily newspapers and syllabus & question papers to users. Most of the college libraries under study need to improve the services in regard to issuance of sufficient number of documents, adequate numbers of computers for users, provision of internet and photocopy services, exhibition of newly acquired documents, reference service and reading tables, chairs & space. This study has made an attempt to examine the current trends of user perception in terms of library services and availability of resources in public libraries in one of the western Tamil Nadu State particularly Tiruppur District Central Public Library. This study highlighted the various elements such as the gender and age wise distribution, Marital status and Educational qualifications, Occupation, and Membership, Residence, Availability of library resources, Frequency of Library visit, and Time spent in Library, Purpose of visiting the Library, Information search pattern, Level of satisfaction in terms of library services and resources were discussed. A total number of 200 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents who are actively participated at Tiruppur district public library. Out of 200 samples, we received only 177 dully filled questionnaires were returned. Descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted for the study and 200 learners were randomly selected from literacy centres across the state. A self-structured questionnaire was designed and appropriately reviewed and validated by experts in the field of information studies and adult education. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts, simple percentages and mean score was used to analyse the data collected from the learners. Results of the analysis revealed a ranking of need for information on health and general wellbeing coming first, followed by information on how to acquire basic literacy skills of reading, writing & arithmetic which was ranked second among others. The findings also showed that adult learners seek information mostly through radio and television (mean = 3.0450), followed by textbooks (mean = 2.8550) and through their facilitators (mean = 2.7400). Adult learners also seek information through their various religious books (mean = 2.7350), literacy primers (mean = 2.6300) and social media (mean = 2.5050).
