The main research method used in this project to enhance the school principal’s reflection was Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). This research choice, though not so common in AR (Katsarou, 2013), was proved to be very fruitful. Field-notes and journal entries were also used and analyzed. This article aims to document and reflect on the processes that facilitated a school principal’s shift, changing his perceptions about leadership and therefore his practice. Specifically, we aim to show how a school principal became empowered, managing to consciously distance himself from espoused theories focusing on leadership characteristics and behavior, towards theories highlighting social and material-discursive contingencies and collective actions, shaped by mutual discursive patterns that emerge and develop among participants in the educational situation under study. We consider this shift a prerequisite for improving his practice and a crucial step in his professional development. To achieve this objective, the article first discusses the key competencies of school principals and the processes through which these competencies can be mastered and then goes on to present a one-year, two-cycle AR project, utilizing CDA. Abstract: This article addresses the key leadership competencies of school principals and how these competencies can be mastered. We argue that combining Action Research with Critical Discourse Analysis can serve as a pathway to enhancing school principals’ professional development. The paper presents an Action Research project conducted in a Junior High School in Crete, Greece. The main research material collected included the transcriptions of principal-teachers’ assemblies, analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis. Interesting findings emerged, shedding light on issues like who speaks, how much, the quality of turn-taking, narratives, role of context, etc. Drawing on the Critical Discourse Analysis findings and his conversations with the research team, the principal’s journal shows how his reflection deepens gradually, while new theoretical perspectives open. We conclude that, under specific circumstances, Action Research enhanced with Critical Discourse Analysis can enable changes in leadership, contributing to principals’ professional development.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114586319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This causes developmental errors. Finally, cultural interference plays an important role in linguistic errors and inappropriateness in the context. Error analysis contributes significantly to foreign language teaching. Errors tell the teachers what the students has acquired and what the students need to learn (Corder, 1987). According to Erdoğan (2005), “Errors are a means of feedback for the teacher reflecting how effective he is in his teaching style and what changes he has to make to get higher performance from his students”. Error analysis gives supportive data to syllabus designers because they decide what items need to be added or which items need to be removed from the syllabus (Erdoğan, 2005).Hasyim (2004) had similar view and stated that error analysis illustrates which aspect in grammar is difficult for the students and how effective is in English teaching progress. Abstract: Errors play a significant role in second and foreign language acquisition. Analyzing the errors in the students’ essays helps the students themselves as well as the teachers and curriculum designers. This study conducted with seventy-four English majored students in TraVinh University, Vietnam. Their essays were examined and the grammatical errors in the essay were figured out and analyzed. The findings showed that verb tense, noun, subject-verb agreement and article are the most common types of errors which were found in students’ essays. This also revealed that conditional, model verb and phrasal verb are the grammatical elements which the students rarely used unsuitably. The findings may have useful implications for the students and teachers’ development.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"208 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114741874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every year in Kenya misuse of drugs costs the country lots of money and sometimes the misuse has led to deaths. Due to the impact of abuse of substances on individual’s health and the socio-economic consequences, there are several efforts towards alleviating or reducing drug abuse in Kenya. With all these challenges and strategies put in place by the government and other concerned parties, drug and substance abuse in Kenya is still on the rise. This calls for drug abuse treatment whose goal is to stop drug use. The objective of this study was to determine the challenges faced by rehabilitation centers in the management of drug and substance abuse. To achieve the purpose of this study, three specific research objectives were addressed i.e., to determine the Challenges of the rehabilitation centres in management of drug and substance abuse in Uasin Gishu as attested by the management, to determine the challenges of the rehabilitation centres in management of drug and substance abuse in Uasin Gishu as attested by the rehabilitees and to establish the ways of improving the effectiveness of the existing rehabilitation centers. The target population came from the drug rehabilitation centers in Uasin Gishu County. It comprised all the drug and substance addicts and their instructors. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the drug and substance rehabilitation centers in Uasin Gishu County while stratified random sampling was used to sample the management and staff members within the rehabilitation centers. Data was collected through questionnaires and focus group discussions. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings as attested by the management and rehabilitees showed poor rehabilitees participation, inadequate resources, poor implementation methods, negative attitude, lack of medication, irregular follow ups, rehabilitees abandonment, high client relapse, inadequate support services being the major challenges to effective implementation. It is recommended that rehabilitation management should recruit clients in references to the infrastructures in some of the rehabilitation centers to avoid congestion and the strained resources observed in some of the rehabilitation centers during the study.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"01 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127444737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
