A single performance metric can fully define all aspects of the word because of organizational priorities and contextual factors, not (Snow &Hambrick, The Kenyan sugar industry has suffered from myriad problems over time. In Western Kenya, in particular, as witnessed by the Mumias Sugar, Sony Sugar, Chemilil Sugar and Miwani Sugar Companies, most of the Kenyan companies have had significant performance challenges. Many businesses either run below capacity or have factories completely Abstract: The study sought to find out the influence of board gender ratio on performance of sugar companies in Western Kenya. Board gender areas that were analyzed included the number of males in the various board committees and also the number of females in the various board committees. Descriptive research design was followed in this report. The research was limited to only Western Kenya's sugar firms, whose number stood at 11 as of 31 December 2019. A census was carried out, given that the number of sugar companies in Western Kenya was only 11. Five respondents were chosen by purposeful sampling to represent each of the 11 sugar factories. These were the Chairman of the Board, the Secretary of the Board (Chief Executive Officer), the two members of the Board (male and female) and the Manager of Finance. The five members are deemed to be in the best position to provide the necessary information for the purposes of this study. Thus, for the analysis, a sample size of 55 respondents was considered. Using semi-structured questionnaires that were self-administered, primary data was obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used and data interpretation showed board gender ratio had a positive statistical and significant effect on performance of sugar companies in Western Kenya. The study recommended that in order to achieve gender-equality on boards of directors, there is need to focus on the educational levels, skills and experiences of the nominees whether male or female. When including women to boards, unique traits such as time consciousness, keenness to details, teamwork, leadership and patience should be considered. India is the leading producer in the world and Uganda the leading producer of banana in sub-Saharan Africa. Kenya is one of the nations practicing banana farming, and the country has embraced this activity, with several regions in the country practicing banana farming for subsistence and commercial purposes. Meru County, specifically Imenti South sub-County, has embraced the activity with households in Imenti South sub-County engaging in banana farming at a high rate. This is an area that has formerly been associated with coffee farming as the major cash crop. Therefore, this study sought to investigate drivers of diversification to banana farming among selected households in Imenti South sub-County. The objective of the study was to determine factors influencing diversification to banana farming among households in the study area. The study used a cross-sectional study design employing mixed methods of data collection. Systematic random sampling was used to select a study sample of 388 farmers to participate in the study. Descriptive and multinomial logistical regression was used to analyze quantitative data using SPSS version 20. Findings indicated that 67% of the respondents were males. About a third (32%) of the respondents was aged 41-50 years while only 13% were aged 18-30 years. Close to half of the respondents (48%) had attained primary level of education as the highest education attainment and 39% of the respondents earned an average monthly income level of 5,000 and below. Regression analysis model revealed that Age, monthly income level, land size, access to reliable markets, access to sufficient farm inputs, access to hybrid planting materials, better payment/returns, high crop productivity, availability of sufficient water influence diversification to banana farming (P<0.05). In conclusion, there is high rate of diversification to banana farming which is driven by high returns and productivity of the crop. However, the study established the need for the government and its allied stakeholders to develop and implement policy guidelines which create an enabling environment for diversification to banana farming such as proper market price regulation, supply of water to farms, easy access to production inputs and provision of high quality, hybrid planting materials to farmers.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121743722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aspect of usage of technological developments by smallholder farmers is either ignored or taken for granted by actors in urban climate change and variability research and development. Measuring technological development in agriculture and further assessing their impacts on livelihood hold the key to strengthening resilience and sustainability of livelihood outcomes. The objective of this article was to assess technological developments practiced by urban farmers in Kampala district and ascertain their effects on smallholder livelihoods. A comprehensive literature review showed that there are various forms of technologies for climate change adaptation including; traditional, modern, soft and hard. The study was conducted in January 2021, using a cross sectional survey of smallholder vegetable farmers in five divisions of Kampala district (Kampala Central, Rubaga, Makindye, Nakawa and Makindye). The study was dominantly field research that employed semi structured questionnaires, interview schedules and observation as techniques of data collection employed in two phased process (explanatory sequential). The study revealed that, technological developments employed by farmers were; use of organic fertilizers, harvesting of rain water, practicing of irrigation. It also showed that some farmers did not use water pans and new crop varieties. Sources of information on climate variability were television, newspapers, radio neighbors and NGOs. And that there is a significant positive and strong relationship between technological improvements and livelihood of smallholder vegetable farmers. Consideration of multiple factors that underlie adaptation decisions, expansion of public and private partnerships is proposed to obviate technological adaptation challenges, using largely farmers’ involvement. These findings reveal that majority of the respondents relied on weather and climate information systems, rain water harvesting, irrigation, new crop varieties and used water pans as technological developments in adaptation to climate variability.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131774452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though several studies linked servant leadership with organizational performance, there is inadequate literature relating servant leadership construct with human resource (HR) practices in the context of church and its growth. The paper reviewed extant conceptual, theoretical and empirical literature on the subject of servant leadership and attempts to integrate it with human resource practices that ultimately affects church context and growth. The study established that servant leadership constructs impacts positively on HR practices as well church growth in spiritual, numerical and financial dimensions. The review established the significance of servant leadership in steering modern organizational growth through empowerment of followers. The paper further proposes an appropriate integrated theoretical model that links the servant leadership constructs with human resource practices, church context and growth. Nonetheless, there is need for further research on effect of other leadership styles on HR practices within the church context.","PeriodicalId":443596,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115771270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globally several policies, strategies, and guidelines have been put in place to deal with the situation. One of the methods proposed to deal with violence against children is the implementation of Community Based Child Protection Systems. The performance of Community Based Child Protection Systems has been riddled with various challenges like poor enforcement of the existing laws, the different subsystems of childcare, justice, law, and order working independently of each other. The study aimed at evaluating the forms and extent of child abuse in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. A mixed methods approach was used. A sample size of 280 participants was selected using both purposive sampling and random sampling techniques. The study found that as high as over 80 per cent had witnessed child mistreatment. The main forms of child maltreatment were child labour, exposure to drugs and liquor, child exploitation, children living in the streets, early marriages, teenage pregnancies as well as FGM/C and giving children away to other people. The study also revealed that new ways had been put in place to avoid different child abuse cases being detected and acted on. Considering that art LarasMadya is one of the cultural heritage products in the form of a traditional musical ensemble that still survives in the community and is the foundation of the existence of folk culture, it is necessary to maintain and develop it. This study will discuss in more depth the community's resistance efforts in maintaining LarasMadya in the millennial era amid the domination of the cultural hegemony that continues to attack. The resistance, of course, can’t be separated from the habitus of the environment in it. The study approach method in this paper is interdisciplinary, or uses more than one disciplines.
