Bringing these aspects to the tourist context, heritage tourism can be understood as the contemplation of phenomena that carry values related to a community’s past. The focus of this research was the Atalaia de Forte Velho in the state of Paraíba. The watchtower was built by the Portuguese as a port defense during the 16th century, and was listed as a heritage site by IPHAN in 1938. Taking these aspects into account, the study analyzes the underestimated tourism potential of the region, from the perspective of the historical and socioeconomic appreciation of the local community. Through an observatory methodology, the site, the infrastructure of the tourist trade and the provision of services for the population were analyzed. The results show that the site has potential to develop heritage tourism. Based on these results, a comparison was made with another heritage site in the same category, seeking to propose the development of actions that could promote the destination and improve the tourist experience, bringing benefits not only for the local community, but also helping to preserve the heritage for future generations.","PeriodicalId":441840,"journal":{"name":"Applied Tourism","volume":"12 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132272508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gradually, the sector resumed its activities, implementing specific protocols and good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while providing guests with hospitality and safety. Guests share their experiences on the Internet, providing information about their stay and evaluating establishments based on the quality of services provided. This information determines the performance of lodging facilities and generates an online reputation that can influence the decision-making of future potential guests. The goal of this research was to analyze the guest experience of twelve hotels categorized as 4- and 5-star, located in the city of João Pessoa in the Brazilian state of Paraíba (PB), during the period of the pandemic, using User-Generated Content (UGC) available on the website Booking.com. The guest experience reported on websites is considered a reliable database, hence our decision to use it as a data collection instrument. A descriptive netnographic survey was conducted, and it was found that in addition to issues related to hospitality, biosecurity, and infrastructure, the breakfast service was a predominant and decisive factor in the guests' evaluation.","PeriodicalId":441840,"journal":{"name":"Applied Tourism","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133739662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This role is fostered within institutions through research, teaching and extension. This work is a report of the experience of students of the APAE of São Pedro, within the extension project \"APAE no Senac\", carried out by the Centro Universitário Senac, Águas de São Pedro campus (SP). Its purpose was to promote the social inclusion of these people, given that one of the main functions of gastronomy, since the discovery of fire, has been to bring people together. The APAE students were able to gain experience of activities of the degree in gastronomy technology by applying cooking and recipe replication techniques, in a controlled environment, in twelve demonstrative and practical classes, accompanied by project scholarship students and advisory professors from the HEI. The classes were developed in the kitchens and restaurant laboratories of the college. It was observed that there is potential for replicability of the work model, due to its characteristics and the low investment required. There is also potential to generate the teaching experience for HEI students and social inclusion for APAE students, through the mastery of new tools and techniques in the area of gastronomy. For this, an exploratory and descriptive study was carried out, based on secondary data available on the Mapa do Turismo 2019-2021 Portal of the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism. As a result, the categorization of tourist municipalities was created from the Tourism Regionalization Program, dividing the State of Rio Grande do Sul into twenty-seven tourist regions. The results show that in addition to the capital Porto Alegre, the Região das Hortênsias is the most important tourist destination in the state; it is the region with the most abundant offer of accommodation facilities, the one that generates more jobs in the hotel industry, and the one that collects the most taxes in the sector. In Parnaíba, in the state of Piauí, there is Rei da Boiada cultural group that carries high symbolic value for those who take part in the ritual. This group is part of the cultural heritage of the city that is home to the participants, who invest a great deal of love, dedication and effort to the art, dance and local culture. Based on a case study of the Rei da Boiada Group, this qualitative research study investigates whether the Bumba-meu-boi Rei da Boiada cultural festival can be considered a tourist attraction. The methods used in this research included a bibliographic review, field study and interviews. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and field observations from 2015 to 2019. The descriptive and explanatory method was used for the data analysis. It was concluded that the group is culturally rich and can be considered a tourist attraction, as it is part of the “Festa de Juninha” – the June festival that attracts tourists. But there has been little research on the Bumba-meu-boi itself, despite its great potential to contribute to the development of cultural tourism in the city.","PeriodicalId":441840,"journal":{"name":"Applied Tourism","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116712503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fact was identified by the members of the research group, and it is a situation faced by many people. In view of this scenario, GCET came up with the idea of creating a Lives project, to encourage learning during the pandemic. This study aims to encourage students and teachers, and society in general, to continue teaching, performing research and complementing studies during the period of social isolation, through the organization of weekly Lives – live videos transmitted on the Instagram platform. The first step in the project was to conduct bibliographic and documentary research, seeking the necessary background for the construction and elaboration of the themes to be addressed. Weekly meetings were held, via videoconferencing, to plan the Lives and facilitate communication and preparation of the advance planning to achieve the project objective. The email addresses and Whatsapp accounts of the research group were also used for correspondence, to answer questions, receive suggestions, and conduct surveys on the issues to be addressed during the Lives. Reports on the Lives were prepared and made available on the YouTube, Podcast and Instagram accounts of GCET. This support was essential for the success of the Lives, and for the satisfaction of the public. The project was carried according to the following steps: identification of the problem, theoretical input, weekly planning, survey, distribution of themes and technical support. The project aired a total of sixteen Lives in the period April 17 to July 9, analyzing the ability to meet specific needs and social inclusion. The Lives were held once a week addressing different themes, according to the theoretical findings and the demands of the target audience, resulting in the construction of knowledge and providing new skills to society, encouraging and motivating the practice of scientific knowledge. The experience of the GCET Lives project impacted not only the external participants but also its creators, as it became a motivational tool for scientific knowledge during social isolation.
