The act of naming bears the imprint of their preferences, their connection with different cultures, their attitude towards religion, brands and events. Thus, one can notice the coexistence of old, traditional names and names influenced by onomastic fashion, of original, atypical first names and names with religious origins. Oltean","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/77","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/77","url":null,"abstract":"The paper proposes an interpretation within a syntactic and semantic framework of the logical and grammatical status of proper names (PNs) in their conventional and unconventional uses. In doing so, it addresses the semantics of proper names first, which are seen to be unstructured linguistic expressions, with no inherent meaning or sense; their sole function is to denote an individual directly. However, proper names have multiple uses that challenge this narrow acceptation. They often refer to sets of entities and display a behavior characteristic of common names, expressing properties of the bearer of the name, or denote individuals in fictions in their fictional uses. This is certainly also due to their visibility and relevance for orientation in public space. The focus of this paper is on the street names in the city of Sibiu (Hermannstadt, Romania) in the 20th century where nowadays a majority of Romanians live together with the Hungarians and the traditionally Germanspeaking Saxons. In the course of the 20th century, bilingualism was introduced to street names, and in the wake of political changes multiple renamings took place. If one takes this perspective, the city of Dar es Salaam is multicultural from its very beginnings. Geographically lying on the African continent, the city was founded by an Omani Sultan and, until Independence in 1961, was the capital of German East-Africa and subsequently administered by the UK. This eventful history is reflected in the different layers of names assigned to the streets in the historical city centre. The paper aims to analyse ethnic slurs from the perspective of political correctness, a relatively recent phenomenon that requires the use of a certain type of vocabulary according to various linguistic taboos. The corpus consists of a series of ethnonyms investigated in communicative contexts taken from the written press. {"title":"Names of saints and holidays in various Romanian ethnographic areas and cultural spaces","authors":"Delia-Anamaria Răchișan","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/66","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/66","url":null,"abstract":"The paper aims to highlight two aspects: on the one hand, to what extent names of saints interact with names of holidays in the Christian (Orthodox, Greek-Catholic, Roman-Catholic) calendar and in the folk calendar; on the other hand, whether names of saints and/or holidays in Romanian cultural space can be found in other cultural spaces. Upon looking at names of saints and holidays over the year in the calendars mentioned above, sometimes we notice similarities or contaminations, whereas on other occasions we come across differences. We focus our attention on twelve saints, correlated with twelve holidays over the year, celebrated by Christians regardless of religious confession and cultural space. The regional names of the holidays from various Romanian ethnographic areas attest to their age. These place names and anthroponyms are based on Latin onomastics, influenced by the Arabization of the Iberian Peninsula which occurred in the eighth century and the subsequent cultural and linguistic Catalanization. It is possible to observe that the primitive Latin element is evident in names of Mozarabic origin, and that there are many Arab, and some Hebrew elements, which are the result of the presence of these two cultures during the Middle Ages in our territory. The Catalan element – which makes up the majority – comes from the medieval Christian repopulation carried out during the reign of Count Ramon Berenguer IV in the mid-twelfth century. The aim of the article is to analyse characteristic semantic features of appellative nicknames. These are usually tropical (metaphorical or metonymic), therefore it is important to define the connection between metaphors and metonyms. This semantic group of toponyms differs from base words in both characteristic and meaning. The research of ethnonymic-origin toponyms reveals the ways in which proper names reflect the worldview of the inhabitants of the region. The material for the article was collected from the Geoinformation Database of Lithuanian Toponyms. To explain the origin of toponyms with reference to base words, the Dictionary of Lithuanian Surnames and the Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language were used. This research focuses on word formation based on the structural-grammatical classification of hydronyms developed by Lithuanian linguist and etymologist Aleksandras Vanagas.
