MAPSE and TDI S’ have also been shown to be reproducible assessments of longitudinal heart changes as LVEF is ineffective in cases of sub-optimal echocardiographic imagery caused by artefacts or air trapping. \u0000Methodology: One hundred patients referred for echocardiography at the cardiac laboratory of DELSUTH, Oghara, Nigeria was recruited for the study. All patients had trans-thoracic echocardiography done with M-Mode, 2D and Spectral Doppler and Tissue Doppler echocardiographic images acquired. Data obtained was analyzed using IBM-SPSS version 22. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered significant for all comparisons. \u0000Findings: Hypertension was the commonest indication for an echocardiogram. The prevalence of abnormal left ventricular function was 13%, 24% and 28% as determined using LVEF, TDI S’ and MAPSE. MAPSE had a higher specificity than TDI S’ with statistically significant correlations found between TDI S’ (p<0.001); MAPSE (p=0.032) and LVEF. Multiple linear and binomial logistic regression analysis showed significant relationships (beta=0.423; p <0.001) and odd ratios [OR(CI) = 10.80(2.56- 49.07)] respectively between TDI S’ and LVEF. \u0000Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: MAPSE’s specificity allows for diagnosis of longitudinal heart functional changes even in cases where the LVEF may be within normal limits. A combination of both MAPSE and TDI S’ offer a greater prognostic significance. The correlation between MAPSE and TDI S’ were good. Thus, MAPSE and TDI S’ can serve as surrogates for LVEF in assessing left ventricular systolic function and prognosticating cardiac disease","PeriodicalId":441176,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Health, Medicine and Nursing Practice","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127222636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study population was made up of 15 nurse managers (frontline, middle-level, and top-level managers) from four referral hospitals in Yaoundé-Cameroon. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide from a purposeful sample of nurse managers. The saturation level determined the sample size for the study. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. \u0000Findings: There was a diversity in the role of nurse managers in developing the clinical decision-making skills of critical care nurses. Professional recognition, advocacy, and teamwork were the categories generated from the managers' views on nurses’ participation in institutional meetings. Nine managers viewed effective recognition and reward system as the main motivation system for empowering nurses in clinical decision-making. Administrative meetings and rounds, basic materials and skills, interdisciplinary collaboration and standardization of care were the main strategies used by nurse managers to support decision-making in critical care. Subordination of nurses, lack of qualified staff, and infrequent organization of seminars, and meetings involving nurses were the major challenges they faced. \u0000Unique contributions to theory, practice, and policy: Findings from the study proposed that hospital nurse managers should employ various strategies to motivate nurses in decision-making by installing an effective recognition and reward system, involving them in institutional meetings, and creating a collaborative environment that favors nurse’s autonomy in decision-making.","PeriodicalId":441176,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Health, Medicine and Nursing Practice","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126228817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In chronic conditions with long-term therapies like hypertension, diabetes, depression, etc., adherence is important in achieving target outcomes but is often low. It has long been recognized that support from family, friends and significant others do play a role in helping diabetics adhere to their medication which might lead to optimal glycaemic control. This study set out to find out what influence perceived social support has, as regards medication adherence among adult type 2 diabetic Nigerians assessing care in Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Nigeria. \u0000Methodology: The study was conducted on 244 participants who attended the diabetic clinic of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba from September to November 2018. Data was collected by means of an interviewer-administered questionnaire comprising of 3 sections. Section A was for sociodemographic characteristics, section B was the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale for information on medication adherence and section C was the modified Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support to collect information on perceived social support. \u0000Findings: All the recruited 244 participants completed the study giving a response rate of 100. The age range of the respondents was 18 to 87 years with a mean age of 51.9 ± 6.1 years. Females accounted for a higher percentage of respondents [60.2%] compared to their male counterparts [39.8%]. Good total perceived social support was significantly associated with high medication adherence [p=0.0001]. A good total perceived social support (OR = 3.27; 95% CI = 2.25 - 4.71; P = 0.0001) has 3.27 times the odds for high medication adherence than a poor total perceived social support. \u0000Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The study shows that high medication adherence is significantly associated with good perceived social support. It is important that healthcare providers caring for patients with type 2 diabetes involve families, friends, or significant others in their management so as to improve their medication adherence. Routine evaluation of perceived social support is also recommended for type 2 diabetes patients with poor medication adherence.","PeriodicalId":441176,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Health, Medicine and Nursing Practice","volume":" 25","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120834534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
