Eight of the worst damaged sets of playbills from the collection of the Theatre Department of the Historic Museum under the National Museum were restored within the terms of this project using methods that enabled methodological processing of the acquired experience. This article contains a description of the typical damage to these sets and the chosen approach to their renovation. The individually taken steps are described and the text is complemented by selected image documentation.
Časopis Národního muzea. Whether it was caused by the extraordinary life story and extravagant personality of its author, communist journalist and resistance fighter Julius Fučík (1903–1943), or the long-lasting dispute concerning both its contents and circumstances of its origin. Yet, the authenticity of the text was finally subsustimated by the expert forensic report in the early 1990s. At the same time, however, the suspicion of the censorship of Fučík’s original text was confirmed. Even though the book was repeatedly published, its manuscript remained inaccessible to the public as the property of Fučík’s widow Gusta Fučíková (1903–1987). It was only after her death in 1987 when the original Fučík’s autograph became a part of the collection of the Klement Gottwald Museum, a party museum controlled by the monopolistic Communist party government. With the collapse of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, the newly established Museum of the Workers’ Movement required the manuscript. Finally, in 2014, they donated it, together with their other collections, to the National Museum. This change enabled an extensive conservation and restoration collaborative research carried out by the National Museum and the University of Chemistry and Technology (VŠCHT). The manuscript of Notes has been stored in so-called glass sandwiches since the early 1950s. They consisted of 167 slips of paper – on which the individual passages of Notes used to be smuggled out of Pankrác prison – inserted in plastic films and put (usually three and three on every side) between two durable glass plates. Unfortunately, this seemingly safe and precise storage method did not prevent gradual degradation of selected snippets. Therefore, it was decided to launch a physical condition investigation during which experts revealed significant differences from the declared conservation method, including the absence of alleged protection against ultraviolet radiation by supposedly ultraviolet-resistant glass. Further research and verification of the causes of paper degradation will determine the final nature of the restoration procedure and the subsequent method of storage of Fučík’s manuscript.
Časopis Národního muzea. Based on the broader context of Kutnar’s work, the autor attempts to provide a clear interpretation of the significant features typical for Kutnar’s view of the revolutionary year 1848 and thus made a distinctive contribution to the development of Czech research on the 1848 revolution.
Časopis Národního muzea. It includes (under the inventory number 1744) a photographic album containing portrait photographs (business card format) of important personalities of Czech political, cultural and public life in the second half of the 19th century. The collection of photographs is both an important iconographic source for the history of Czech society in the 19th century and a very interesting insight into the production of important photographic studios of the time. Apart from the content analysis of the photographic album (represented photographic studios, personalities, the role of the photographic album in society), attention is also paid to the question of the physical condition of the album as an artefact forming part of the national cultural heritage.
Časopis Národního muzea. We wanted to point out the importance of previously overlooked museum collections in documenting our development, and draw attention to museums as a source of learning and knowledge. It was interesting to view the equipment and items used by students and the Civil Forum when addressing the public and promoting their ideas – posters, leaflets, film shots, various three-dimensional items, and also the technical equipment that strike committees used during their work. The second important part of the study was analysis of three speeches by Mojmír Prokop, spokesman of the Civil Forum in České Budějovice, during the course of the first half of November and the beginning of December 1989 – we saw the impression his speeches gave (how they reflected the changing society-wide situation), his emphasis of various topics and their selection. The process by which these people became members of power structures, how they were co-opted into national committees on all levels and also into the Federal Assembly, was also interesting.
Časopis Národního muzea. The influence of commedie dell’arte on Czech avant-garde theatre, with an emphasis on the artistic component of the production\u0000\u0000The article deals with the influence of commedia dell’arte on Czech avant-garde theatre and especially on scenography. This rediscovered historical form penetrated the Czech environment under the influence of French , Russian and German examples. This proces was done in three partially overlapping waves, essential for development of Czech art in general: the first, stemming from late Symbolism and Expressionism (mainly 1905–1925), the second, Constructivis-Poetic (mainly 1924–1928), and the third, which was influenced not only by Poetism, but also by Surrealism and the effort to return to folk roots (mainly 1928–1945). Using examples of dozens of productions, the article shows how the relationship of Czech avant-garde theatre artists to commedia dell’arte was diverse and how it changed over time. The author used stage designs and photographs in the National Museum’s Theatre Collection and articles in the contemporary press as key sources.
Časopis Národního muzea. The nineteen sixties in the Archive of the National Museum\u0000\u0000The period of the nineteen sixties is a period of crucial endeavours by archivist Aleš Chalupa at the Archive of the National Museum. During this period he drew up a very interesting plan for documenting the present, which he also succeeded in implementing. But he also faced several serious crises. In relation to strict application of the principle of provenance in Czechoslovak archival science, there was a risk that the ANM would lose several rare resources, or rather its so-called Ancient collections. A competence dispute with another key institute, the Literary Archive of the Monument of National Literature, also erupted during this decade and, once again, the result was substantial depletion of the collections of the museum’s archive. Despite all these difficulties, A. Chalupa succeeded not only in defending the actual existence of the ANM itself, but even secured the status of Archive of Special Importance for it.
Časopis Národního muzea. One of the reasons for this was the elaborate system of state symbolism, for instance state holidays. This article focuses on the genesis of origin of the system of state holidays, its implementation within the terms of everyday or annual “operation” and finally also on its reception in a multi-national state. The systém of state holidays was represented chiefly by the date of celebration of the birthday of President T. G. Masaryk (3 March), the First of May, the date of the anniversary of the Battle of Zborov (2 July), the Feast of Jan Hus, the feasts of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius and also Saint Wenceslas, and particularly the 28 October, which was the date the republic had been established.
Časopis Národního muzea. These two researchers were on opposing sides during the so-called re-ennoblement trials, a matter related to the forgery of documents proving relations with ancient Czech noble families.
