Etkind\u0000 is a vital figure within the translation milieu of the ‘Thaw’ era of the late 1950s and early 1960s, when there\u0000 was a policy of de-Stalinization and a degree of liberalization. Etkind’s insightful work on poetry translation using comparative\u0000 stylistics reflected, in some ways, the cultural-political environment of the time. It differed radically from the Realist\u0000 approach of Ivan Kashkin, who was influenced by Socialist Realism and Stalin-era rhetoric. Etkind pushed the boundaries of what\u0000 could be said about translation. His apparently apolitical approach was in fact strongly politicized in the Soviet context, and\u0000 his choice of authors and translators to discuss evidenced his sympathy for those out of favor with the regime and for fellow\u0000 Jews. This article explores how Chinese thinking on painting is\u0000 translated into English and what implications it carries for the English translation of Chinese traditional culture in general.\u0000 Early Chinese Texts on Painting, an academic book targeting academics and China enthusiasts, is taken as a case study.\u0000 Using the notion of cultural translation as a theoretical foundation, this study finds that three strategies are used to translate Chinese\u0000 painting into English: pluralizing meanings of key notions, contextualizing otherness through the recurrence of Taoist, Confucian, and\u0000 Chinese literary ideas, and restructuring temporal and thematic ideas. These findings imply that cultural authenticity of foreign otherness\u0000 can be approximated despite temporal, cultural, and linguistic distances. The project examines the work product of trainee translators to categorize 122 errors that are\u0000 (un)noticed and (un)corrected by them. MT errors in the Accuracy category were best identified and corrected, followed by those in\u0000 the Lexicon and Fluency categories. Trainee translators who were advanced language learners outperformed the intermediate group in\u0000 MT error detection and correction, especially in the Lexicon category. This study sheds light upon the use of raw MT output as\u0000 meaningful input for trainee translators who are in the process of learning Chinese. A within-subject experiment was designed for 23 MA translation students who sight translated sentences with\u0000 different degrees of structural asymmetry from English into Chinese in both single sentence and discourse contexts. To measure\u0000 cognitive load, participants’ eye movements during translation were recorded using an eye tracker. Three major findings were\u0000 generated: (1) The effect of word order asymmetry was confirmed on both sentence-based and word-based processing; (2) Contextual\u0000 information did not contribute to less effortful processing in the discourse context (as indicated by more fixations and longer\u0000 regressions); (3) Segmentation was used far more frequently than restructuring to address asymmetric structures. The first edition is a heavily edited translation tailored for uninitiated readers, featuring omissions of Woolf’s voluminous notes and additions such as chapter summaries and glossaries. The second edition includes a postface written as a letter to Woolf, where the translator critiques Woolf’s feminism and suggests postcolonial feminism as a better framework for Korean women. The final edition is a full translation with an introduction and notes from a renowned scholar, where the translator refrains from critiquing Woolf, focusing instead on expanding Woolf’s ideas and the scholar’s commentary. These interviews focused on lawyers’ knowledge of\u0000 the interpreting profession and their expectations of interpreting services. The findings show that lawyers overall possess a\u0000 sound knowledge of how to work with interpreters, as evidenced in their recognition of the interpreter’s ethical role, their\u0000 awareness of the need to accommodate the interpreter’s professional needs, and their ability to use various strategies to evaluate\u0000 interpreting quality. In terms of lawyers’ expectations, they value interpreters speaking the right dialect, being patient, and\u0000 complying with ethical requirements. The lawyers’ expectations of interpreting services are closely related to their professional\u0000 goal. The present article argues that a translation can have an impact on its translator whose relationship with the target culture is ambivalent. The British missionary Timothy Richard and his Chinese translation of Looking Backward is the case under investigation. Richard played multiple roles in late Qing China. He was a reformer as well as a missionary. The study, which focuses on university communities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China, is one\u0000 of the rare cases examining community translation and interpreting in a non-immigrant country where non-Chinese speakers are in a\u0000 linguistically weaker position. The role of citizen translators in cultural mediation is outlined by recontextualizing mediation\u0000 through interview-based qualitative research.
