Data gathered from a much larger corpus show that asyndeton is correlated to turn-beginnings in conversation, and that particles, contrary to Duhoux’ thesis, are rare in some prose genres (Thucydides’ historiography). There are also, pace Duhoux, statistically significant differences between dialogic and non-dialogic sections of literary texts. \u0000 The second part (paragraphs 6–11) is a corpus-based study of asyndeton in poetry (tragedy, Aristophanes) and prose (Plato, Xenophon). Building on the observation that particles are significantly less frequent at turn beginning, the analysis shows that asyndeton in dialogue occurs preferentially where the relation between two turns is predetermined (esp. in answers to questions). By contrast, particles are frequently used in questions, where the utterance \u0000needs to be situated within the exchange. Particle usage is determined by the structure of linguistic interaction, rather than by formal oppositions such as dialogue vs. continuous speech.

In this article, I explore yet another reason for the decline of the infinitive: I argue that the system of infinitival complementation became fundamentally ambiguous in its expression in later Greek. \u0000 \u0000As has been noted previously, the loss of the future and perfect tense had a serious impact on the use of infinitival complementation. However, rather than there being an ‘omission’ of temporal distinctions, as previous studies have claimed, I argue that the present and aorist infinitive became polyfunctional, being used for anterior, simultaneous, and posterior events. Next to temporal ambiguity, a second type of ambiguity occurred: ‘modal’ ambiguity or ambiguity with regard to the speech function of the complement clause. Already in Classical times, the present and aorist infinitive could be used after certain verb classes to encode both ‘propositions’ and ‘proposals’ (offers/commands), an ambiguity which continues to be found in later Greek. The study is based on a corpus of documentary texts from the Roman and Byzantine periods (I – VIII AD).

Both literary and epigraphic evidence attest that in certain positions β was a viable option for Greek authors and stone cutters by the end of the 3rd century B.C.E., and that its use spread to other positions in the succeeding generations. The increasing β/u substitutions in turn demonstrate a shift in the pronunciation of Latin u from [w] to [β] that occurred among Greek speakers of Latin over the same period.

It argues, contra Gaertner 2007, that the verbs are not analogous: while uertere is normally used of vessels and means ‘to empty (by turning upsidedown)’, uergere is primarily applied to liquids and means ‘to pour down’. Two Ovidian contexts (Met. 4.506 and Pont. 1.9.52), in which uertit is used of liquids, thus appear anomalous; arguably uersit should be restored in both contexts, even though the perfect of uergere is only attested by late-antique grammarians but not in literary texts.

Since the discovery of the inscription, scholars have been speculating about the meaning of the term. While this original interpretation reflects in an \u0000exemplary fashion the changing societal attitudes towards „homosexuality“ in the last fifty years, it misses the mark, given that the ancient Romans had a different concept of sexuality.
