As a result, the scope of the handbook is necessarily broad and ambitious. Five sections cover key topics such as administration, finance and budgeting, cataloguing and management of the collection, marketing and outreach, and use of technology. Most graduates of professional library and information science programs will have taken courses in cataloguing, collections management, website design, and data management that would provide significantly more detailed coverage of these topics than this handbook, but this volume could be useful as a refresher or as a starting point to fill in gaps in educational background. Each chapter is written by an experienced practitioner familiar with the financial and personnel challenges of working in a small library, and most chapters contain useful suggestions for further reading. However, the very breadth of scope of this manual and the fact that the chapters are written by different practitioners, each with a different background and set of experiences, results in rather uneven coverage. For example, chapter 10 (“How to Acquire Library Materials on a Tight Budget”) and chapter 14 (“How to Excel at Collection Development”) overlap with each other significantly: both contain definitions of collection development and an overview of the collection policy. In other sections, coverage of key topics is incomplete. For example, the entire finance and budgeting section is very brief, containing only two chapters, one devoted to raising funds and the other to writing grant proposals. While these chapters are useful, there is no coverage of more fundamental aspects of financial management such as an analysis of different budgeting strategies, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of budget allocation formulae, an explanation of the differences between capital and operating budgets, or a discussion of the importance of vendor relations. Even more curiously, the section focusing on marketing and outreach does not actually describe basic marketing strategies, particularly ideas for using social media to promote the library and its services. It was found that conference proceedings are the preferred venue for scholarly communication, but the impact of conference papers is not comparable to that of journal articles. The potential reasons for the lower impact of conference papers are discussed, and possible approaches to improve the current scholarly communication system in computer science are proposed.Cette recherche explore les pratiques de publication des scientifiques canadiens en informatique et compare l’impact des présentations à des colloques et des articles de revues savantes publiées par ces chercheurs. Using data from 60 respondents to the survey questionnaire and a total of 263 information activities from the online diary survey of 28 participants, this study investigated four research questions regarding information needs, information sources, the digital devices used for information searches, and the relationships between information needs, information sources, and digital devices in international students’ daily information environments. The findings demonstrate that international students with diverse information needs sought information from a wide range of information sources, including search engines and human-mediated sources, using portable digital devices for their information searches. This study revealed that participants used different information sources and digital devices depending on the type of information needs. The findings provide useful insights into the information services available to international students in a higher education context.Les étudiants internationaux constituent une des populations dont la croissance est la plus forte aux États-Unis. A comprehensive knowledge base is automatically constructed with the aid of Wikipedia, which has been modelled as an associative network of concepts. Semantic marker gets a short answer, extracts the most important concepts, and initiates a spreading activation algorithm to measure the degree of relatedness between the student’s answer and the corresponding ideal answer. The proposed approach significantly and consistently outperforms previous unsupervised methods for short answer grading.Dans cet article, nous abordons le problème de la notation automatique des réponses courtes, en nous plaçant dans la perspective d’une relation textuelle non surveillée et fondée sur le savoir.
