In this contribution, I develop an alternative understanding of retributivism. Rather than as a theory of the justification of punishment, I propose to regard it as a hermeneutic theory, i.e.a theory about\u0000 how we understand (some) punishments. I start with an explanation of what "hermeneutical retributivism" is (1). In what follows, I examine the ramifications of this view (2). It leads to a different assessment of the relation between retributive theories and prevention theories (2.1)\u0000 and of the relation between punishments and non-punitive mea- sures such as preventive custody (2.2). It also leads to a reconceptualisation of the problem of the justification of punishments (2.3). It sometimes appears frequently, and some of the basic concepts of Kant's moral philosophy are even sometimes explained with the help of the concept of a moral value. The paper examines the question what this talk means.\u0000 Kant himself does not make this an issue, and even the secondary literature has so far hardly investi- gated what he understands by a value as such. From there, it is then possible to develop the meaning that talk of a moral value must have. Neither does Kant address this issue,\u0000 and the secondary literature has hardly approached the talk of a special value, namely the moral one, from Kant's general understanding of value, although this provides deep insights.

Yet, no one has ever questioned whether the consequences claimed to be caused by the sun – among them especially\u0000 the vital genesis of all physical things – can, based on Plato's philosophy, actually be caused by the material body of the sun. Taking this as a point of departure, the present article looks into whether one can reveal more of the Analogy, just as Socrates himself frequently\u0000 emphasises the incompleteness of his presentation. The article thus develops a series of detailed arguments to propose a differentiation of each analogical relation into two subrelations, which imply a transcendent principle and an immanent representation of this principle on both sides of\u0000 the Analogy. Implementing this differentiation bears the potential to solve existing tensions within the interpretation of Republic VI and VII, it allows for further systematic considerations about, among others, the Good and the Beautiful and it may help to contextualise Plato's Analogy\u0000 historically.
