The excavations led here in 2017—2020\u0000 brought to discovery of some flat burials of the Smolensk-Polack Long Barrows Culture,\u0000 which were then studied on a fairly large area, which can be dated to the 8 th —\u0000 beginning/first half of the 11 th century (the second cultural and chronological horizon\u0000 of the functioning of the cemetery). Complex\u0000 analytical studies, including optical and electron microscopy, mass spectrometry and\u0000 emission spectral analysis, were carried out to identify the possible functional purpose\u0000 of the vessels, as well as to identify potential raw material sources. Areas in the\u0000 vicinity of the Bolgar settlement were identified, where the composition of the clay is\u0000 similar to the composition of the ceramic paste. A part of\u0000 them has been published by the author of this article, the rest is still waiting for\u0000 publication. Here, artifacts of undetermined provenience are presented. We may only\u0000 guess that they were discovered before the World War II in the Old Ruthenian areas of\u0000 the modern Ukraine. They are discussed in conformity with the typology of medieval maces\u0000 and East European flail striking heads elaborated more than a half century ago by\u0000 Anatoliy Kirpichnikov. Presented specimens of old weapons are not full-value\u0000 archaeological sources because they are devoid of the archaeological context. This\u0000 necropolis was located near Yelets mentioned in the chronicle. Since the necropolis was\u0000 completely uncovered, the article presents the calculated boundaries and area of it, as\u0000 well as paleodemographic analysis. As a result of studying the stratigraphy of the\u0000 necropolis, the location of a small wooden church was determined. The article provides a\u0000 comparative analysis with rural medieval Russian cemeteries. One of the mysteries of the\u0000 necropolis, which was filled by 1 or 2 generations, were individuals with Mongoloid\u0000 features. In addition, the physical type of the rural population of the Yelets\u0000 Principality was reconstructed, which showed the heterogeneity of the group. These objects are made of terracotta, clay,\u0000 bronze. Considering the total number of finds dated to the 6th—10th centuries, the\u0000 popularity of these images can be noted. Their appearance is associated with the\u0000 influence exerted by the Sogdians. The images correlate with the cult of ancestors,\u0000 ideas about the afterlife, the posthumous existence and the subsequent resurrection of\u0000 the dead. An early find is a fragment of a terracotta Christian icon of the 5th—6th\u0000 centuries with a Syrian inscription, which probably got to the city of Taraz along the\u0000 Great Silk Road. The article presents the version that the scene “Resurrection” is\u0000 reproduced on the icon. The ossuaries, decorative clay columns, bronze amulets\u0000 supposedly depict Avestan fravashi. The origins of the gesture can be traced in the art\u0000 of Ancient Egypt, Etruscans, Iran, Byzantium, Sogd. The prayer gesture with folded hands\u0000 has been preserved in ritual practice and religious art to this day.
Stratum plus. Items of similar appearance, with a long often\u0000 ornately shaped handle and a not very deep scoop were found in settlements and burial\u0000 grounds of the 11th—13th centuries, accidental finds are also known. In this article we\u0000 analyzed over 100 finds. We have proposed a classification of the items based on\u0000 technological and morphological features and have regarded place of the pendants in the\u0000 costume. Spoon-shape pendants were found on a vast territory — from the Baltic to the\u0000 Upper Volga region. The items were the attributes of both rural and urban inhabitants.\u0000 According to the concentration of products both in the lands of the Smolensk Dnieper\u0000 region and in the North-West of Russia we suppose that there were several centers of the\u0000 production of such pendants. In the archaeological literature the spoon-shape pendants\u0000 were regarded as the pagan amulets that had symbolized satiety, wealth and well-being.\u0000 According to the late dating and widespread use in the Christian lands of Ancient Russia\u0000 the spoon-shape pendants could serve as miniatures of Eucharistic spoons and could have\u0000 been a symbol of the Orthodox rite of communion.
Stratum plus. The burial was sunk into the Scythian barrow. The\u0000 inventory included a knife, an earring, an awl and a fireflint. The sheep femur lay\u0000 behind the skull of the buried. An analysis of the funerary rite and inventory made it\u0000 possible to date the Glinoe 13/2 grave to the 9th—10th centuries. Radiocarbon dating of\u0000 human and sheep bones made it possible to specify the time of the internment until the\u0000 end of the 9th — the first half of the 10th century. An analysis of the peculiarities of\u0000 the placement of sacrificial food remains and the composition of species in it in the\u0000 medieval burials of the North Black Sea region confirms the Early Hungarian attribution\u0000 of the published grave. This burial is included in the group of Early Hungarian graves\u0000 near the Glinoe village, which reflects the presence of a large family in this\u0000 microregion. These circumstances, together with the date of the Frumusica graves and\u0000 evidence from the written sources, allow us to state the presence of the Early\u0000 Hungarians in the Lower Dniester region at the beginning of the 10 th century.
Stratum plus. The\u0000 widespread use of spears was associated with, among other things, the relative ease of\u0000 their manufacture and the relationship of price to combat utility. There are\u0000 inaccuracies in the literature related to terminology, such as spear and javelin. It is\u0000 important to consider how spear was used in fight, whether it was used exclusively for\u0000 fighting by stabbing and possibly cutting, or whether it was also thrown. The first ones\u0000 to be mentioned in the sources, the Sclaveni and the Antes, fought mainly with short\u0000 spears and shields. The term άκοντίον (akontion in Latin transliteration) applied in\u0000 this context was used to describe the javelin. Also Arabic sources from the 9th century\u0000 describe Slavs using javelins and short spears. European iconography from the 9th—12th\u0000 centuries also shows that spears intended for close combat could also be thrown. The\u0000 spear has undergone far-reaching transformations over the centuries, but the original\u0000 change was that of use, which entailed an adaptation of form. In the 11th century it\u0000 began to evolve in two directions: towards the knight’s lance, and later the infantry\u0000 pike. Very long spear specimens have been found that exceeded 3 m, which may be a\u0000 manifestation of both of these trends. Only the finding of the lower spear butt could\u0000 give us the answer whether we are dealing with an infantry or a cavalry weapon in a\u0000 given specimen.
Stratum plus. Ladoga and Wolin played a leading role of nodal centers in this\u0000 communication. The inflow of Arabic dirhams to the Western Slavic lands was the main\u0000 material determinant of contacts. Another direction of these relations is demonstrated\u0000 by ceramic vessels specific to pottery of the North-Western Slavic territory detected in\u0000 north-western Early Rus’. The small group of Tornow type vessels is registered in\u0000 Gorodok on the Lovat’ River in the mid-10th century. Its chronology corresponds to the\u0000 times of liquidation of strongholds in the Tornow-Klenica zone. It is interpreted as an\u0000 archaeological evidence of slave trade between the Piasts and Baltic-Oriental trade\u0000 diasporas. The material and religious culture and wooden building of the two settlements\u0000 is characterized by a number of similarities. Post-and-plank constructions erected at\u0000 the end of the 9th and the mid of the 10th century were attested there. The material\u0000 culture registered inside and around these wooden structures indicates that they could\u0000 have been the seats of “trade diasporas”. The Novgorod collection of such finds is the most\u0000 important one and allows for a comprehensive analysis, including morphological,\u0000 stratigraphic and topographic studies. Thanks to the introduction of new finds into\u0000 scientific discussion, the typology was clarified, and the main variants of images were\u0000 considered. The chronology of anthropomorphic sculpture corresponds to the dating of\u0000 other categories of pagan cult objects. The variety of types and variants falls on the\u0000 pagan period and the first century after baptism. The exception is wooden finials, the\u0000 use of which continues until the early 14th century. Topographic analysis shows that\u0000 most of the finds are localized in structures, which indicates the use of small\u0000 anthropomorphic sculptures as housing apotropaea. Perhaps the semantic meaning of this\u0000 category of cult objects should be sought in the cults of “domestic” gods, such as Rod\u0000 or Svarozhich, and a connection with the archaic traditions of house-building magic is\u0000 not excluded.
Stratum plus.
