We will analyze the trajectories and itineraries of these objects and seek to understand the materialization of their subjectivity, memories and social elements, as well as perceive uses and reuses made throughout time and in different contexts. To do this, we will use the concept of object itineraries that aims to capture the complexity of the artifacts by tracing their own dynamics. For the development of such an argument, we adopt an archival archeology as a methodology to retrieve the information about the stories of the objects. We believe that by using such an approach it is possible to recover stories, memories and social issues that have been materialized in ancient objects and thus contribute to an understanding and interpretation of the past.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"53 1","pages":"11-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2018-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2019.53.958","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47236479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A partir del cotejo de distintos textos coloniales tempranos escritos en lengua maya por autoridades autóctonas y de definiciones de voces mayas yucatecas contenidas en uno de los primeros diccionarios coloniales, el Calepino de Motul, el presente trabajo tiene el objetivo de identificar nociones claves en el pensamiento político de los mayas y de acercarse a su propia concepción de la justicia. Se plantea la hipótesis de que la idea de “palabra concertada” fue central en la visión maya del buen gobierno y de la justicia.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2018-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2018.52.892","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67669394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La importancia del edificio reside en su únicaiconografía, y especialmente en la presencia de un texto jeroglífico con una fecha calendárica en una tapa de bóveda pintada. El fechamiento de esta inscripción ha sido instrumental para explicar la combinación de rasgos arquitectónicos, iconográficos y cerámicos asociados con ella. En este trabajo proponemos una nueva interpretación que contradice la datación de la tapa de bóveda en el siglo IX, generalmente aceptada, para emplazar la fecha en el siglo XII.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2018-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2018.52.913","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47693857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The collective name known as “Emblem Glyph”, which served as a regal title, is of particular interest here. In this occasion, we discuss the social implications of the use of the appellative k'uhul kanu'l ajaw , the most frequent Emblem Glyph in the Maya area, during the Late Classic period. We determine the pattern of intergenerational transmission of this and other names related to the Kanu'l social unit, in order to problematize the parentage paradigms and the models of social organization that have been proposed for this period.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"51 1","pages":"75-110"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2018.51.851","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47877300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This event caused the development of contraband in different parts of the Greater Caribbean, such as the Atlantic coast of the General Captaincy of Guatemala. The problem was soon detected by metropolitan authorities, who rigorously began to combat illicit trade by granting Indian governors the power to issue corsair patents. Through the historiographic and archival studies it was possible to find valuable information about the Spanish corsairs, who from their bases in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Campeche, Bacalar and Omoa fought the British navigation in the region of the Gulf of Honduras. It should be emphasized that this article is an innovative contribution because it develops the aspect of the regional Corsair, so little known, and which was an effective weapon against the British transgressions.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"51 1","pages":"151-174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2018.51.884","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45468082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on field research —including participant observation, in-depth interviews, life stories, consultation of documents— in Merida and other locations in Yucatan between 2009 and 2015 and in the review of the literature on Mayan ethnicity in that state. Thus, the paper articulates analytically the results of various studies on the subject and shows that while Mayan ethnicity in Yucatan has a common basis —the ethnic actors identify themselves as Maya, recognizing themselves as heirs of the Pre-Hispanic Maya and distinguish themselves from non-indigenous— also has various political, economic and legal expressions with different scopes. This paper offers theoretical elements to understand the emergence of Mayan ethnicity and its various expressions. It also identifies recent expressions of Mayan ethnicity, such as those related to the impact of social sciences and business foundations, which have not yet been fully analyzed and are presented as routes to explore.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"51 1","pages":"257-282"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2018.51.858","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67669286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The informal interviews with these guides show how the educational courses, specialized workshops and lectures –whether imparted by the NGO´s or the archaeological project– can catalyze the economical sustainability through the tourism. However, and independently of this progress, the tourist guides agree that Archaeology should play a greater role in transforming the excavated data into direct and long-term benefits for their community. The case of Uaxactun and its beginnings with the Community Archaeology highlights that the Archaeology can be a discipline with socio-economic relevance also for the people who live nearby the cultural heritage of the ancient Maya.","PeriodicalId":43489,"journal":{"name":"Estudios de Cultura Maya","volume":"51 1","pages":"129-150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2017-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.19130/IIFL.ECM.2018.51.861","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41433837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
