Before I started inmy role as theGeneral Editor in 2018, discussions about becoming a two-volume journal were already ongoing. I had the opportunity to produce the 2018 volume through our in-house publication, printing, and packaging process before the journal moved to being published by the Cambridge University Press (CUP). Under the leadership of Salwa El-Shawan Castello-Branco as the ICTM President, the planning of a two-volume journal became part of this move to CUP. A two-volume Yearbook enables the possibility of publishing more research by our students and colleagues, and the sharing of more reviews of current multimedia works, audio recordings, videos and films, and books. It also gives our team of editors more creative space in shaping the respective sections of the journal across the calendar year, allowing more flexibility for authors to produce and revise their writings in a closer and more extended form of collaboration with our editors. As issue 1 (July 2022) of volume 54 is being finalised, much of the planning for issue 2 (December 2022) has already taken place. Such overlapping and layering in the planning of the Yearbook through the year, and across the next year, will gradually strengthen the quality, integrity, and the synergy of the journal’s submission, peer review, editorial, and production processes. One of my goals in editing the Yearbook has been to broaden opportunities for junior and developing scholars across the globe, and for colleagues whose scholarship are not as easily accessible in European-American-based periodicals to share their outstanding research as widely as possible. Volume 54 issue 1 is a case in point. ICTM’s move to a two-volume journal was enthusiastically supported by the current editorial team, all of whomhave been steadfast in their commitment to constantly enhance the journal’s standards through their editorship. It draws on two ethnographic studies and their associated activism in Cape Town, South Africa and Lagos, Nigeria. The article investigates the histories of engaged scholarship and applied ethnomusicology and suggests that each community requires a method of engagement based on its contextual specifics. Hence, the case studies may be seen to animate workable approaches in different socio-cultural contexts. The paper concludes that these methods may serve as frameworks for developing site-specific strategies of engaged scholarship in other parts of Africa.","PeriodicalId":43357,"journal":{"name":"YEARBOOK FOR TRADITIONAL MUSIC","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43745664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Her performance of musical works by the Rahbani Brothers at Lebanon’s Baalbak International Festival from the 1950s–70s helped to form a Lebanese national musical style. Through close listening and analysis, this article explores the entanglement of Fairuz’s early music with both the Baalbak Festival and early Lebanese nationalist efforts, arguing that this music’s sound and style consciously laboured to articulate an emergent sense of national identity.","PeriodicalId":43357,"journal":{"name":"YEARBOOK FOR TRADITIONAL MUSIC","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42148736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But it was necessary to put this achievement into the context of the origins of the Bethlehem Bach Festival—how the concern to hear the major works of the Leipzig Kantor led to this annual tradition of performing not only the vocal works of Bach but also his orchestral and chamber music, as well as his keyboard and organ music. When Funfgeld became the conductor of the Choir, its performances were concentrated in two weeks in early May each year. Under his leadership, spring and Christmas concerts were soon added; then there were performances in schools, then lunchtime concerts, recordings, tours, and other opportunities for performing Bach. A subplot of the Funfgeld years in Bethlehem continues to be the influence of Westminster Choir College, where Funfgeld studied, and where others of his collaborators were either faculty or students, including myself, who in 2018 brought to an end thirty-four years of writing program notes for concerts and liner notes for recordings of the Bethlehem Bach Choir. It seems appropriate that such milestones should be recorded in BACH: Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, which celebrates its half century this year.","PeriodicalId":43357,"journal":{"name":"YEARBOOK FOR TRADITIONAL MUSIC","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47054393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
