Middle-aged women are at risk of musculoskeletal disorders because of the decreased muscle mass and bone density caused by a decreased endocrine function. Objectives. This study investigated the effectiveness of a stabilization exercise using respiratory resistance on female patients in their 40s with low back pain. Methods. Fortyfour female patients in their 40s with low back pain were assigned randomly to an experimental (n=22) or control group (n=22). The experimental group performed lumbar stabilization exercises along with respiratory resistance, and the control group only performed lumbar stabilization exercises, both groups for 60 min per session, three sessions a week, for four weeks. The numeric rating scale (NRS), Korean-Oswestry disability index (K-ODI), Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ), static balance ability maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured before and after the intervention program. Results. Both groups showed significant differences in the NRS, K-ODI, FABQ, center of pressure (CoP) velocity, MIP, and MEP before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). In the length and area of CoP, only the experimental group showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). In the experimental group, the K-ODI, FABQ, balance ability, MIP, and MEP showed significantly better improvement than the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion. A lumbar stabilization exercise program using the respiratory resistance is an effective method with increased motor function, psychosocial stability, significant improvement in balance, and respiratory pressure in women in their 40s with low back pain.","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45286425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transnational young people’s physical activity participation could intermingle with their ingrained dispositions acquired from their pre-migrating periods, experiences of transnational mobility, new cultural learning, and other migration processes. Objectives. The current study aimed to investigate transnational youth’s physical activity experience using photo-elicitation interviews. This examination also reported the meaning that the research participants attributed to their physical activity. Methods. The participants in this study were a total of 17 teenagers (ages 13-19 years old) who were recent Indonesian immigrants to New Zealand. Informed consent and child assents were sought before the open-ended interviews. Data analysis involved a thematic analysis procedure through category construction, sorting categories and data, and naming the categories. Results. The analysis resulted in the description of the experience of participating in physical activity within transnational contexts. This experience gives a succinct background on the account of the other three themes: physical activity as the utilization of the body, physical activity for the healthy body, and beyond the corporeal dimension of physical activity. The discourse of body in terms of corporeality was visible throughout the data. Another dimension of the body was derivative, but it was still important to the experience and meaning of physical activity. It was a physical activity for enjoyment and socialization. Conclusion. We conclude that the study provides a new perspective on the meanings of physical activity which can contribute to knowledge development, policy improvement, and practices regarding youth physical activity.","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42995052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of using statistical approaches has increased and became necessary for researchers and specialists in sports biomechanics because they need more objective and accurate methods to increase knowledge. Objectives. Evaluate the reality of using practical significance in the articles published in scientific conferences in the biomechanical sport. Methods. One hundred twenty-four articles were analyzed of 134 in terms of statistical approaches to calculate practical significance. These results were then compared with those of statistical significance to reveal the extent of similarities or differences between the results. Results. The mean test, which was the most commonly used descriptive statistical test, was applied in 114 articles (i.e., 92%); the T-test of paired samples, which was the most used difference measurement tests, was involved in 45 papers (i.e., 36%), statistical tests that measure the relationship between variables were used in 46 articles (i.e., 37%). Likewise, no items used advanced statistical tests except for six articles (i.e., 5%), which used regression and factor analysis. T-test independent samples are the most used statistical tests in sports biomechanics articles in which the results of practical significance matched those of statistical significance (88%). Conclusion. The use of practical significance was almost non-existent. Also, it was observed that there was a large percentage of practical significance mismatch with the statistical significance of many statistical tests, which was a considerable negative indicator that affected the quality of sports biomechanics articles.","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42693001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to analyze the movement of backhand and forehand smash stroke techniques in badminton in three dimensions using a kinematics approach. Objectives. The obtained results were analyzed using a descriptive and quantitative approach. Methods. Furthermore, 24 male badminton players from the university student activity unit with an average age of 19.4 ± 1.6 years, height of 1.73 ± 0.12 m, and weight of 62.8 ± 3.7 kg participated in this study. The study was conducted using 3 Panasonic Handycams, a calibration set, 3D Frame DIAZ IV motion analysis software, and a speed radar gun. Results. The data normalization from the kinematics values of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint motion was calculated using the inverse dynamics method. In addition, a one-way ANOVA test was used to identify differences in the kinematics of motion between two different groups. The obtained results showed that the speed of the shuttlecock during the forehand smash was greater than that during the backhand smash. In the maximal shoulder external rotation phase, two variables were identified to have the best results during the forehand smash, i.e., the velocity of shoulder external rotation and wrist palmar flexion. Conclusion. The velocity of shoulder internal rotation, elbow extension, and forearm supination in the maximum angular velocity phase was higher when making a forehand smash.","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43907868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has created an unprecedented and daunting challenge for humanity to survive. This has also affected the sporting events across the globe as the majority of the tournaments have been cancelled or postponed as a result. For life to return to pre-pandemic normalcy, an effective and safe vaccination program needs to be implemented, be readily accessible, widely available, and affordable at the same time. Objectives. In this review, we analyze various challenges which demonstrate that COVID-19 is far from over.Methods. A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, ScienceDirect, Medline, google scholar and Scopus from the commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic to 22 June 2021. The current report is a summary of data regarding challenges faced by the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and the challenges for a transition toward normalcy especially for big sports events. Results. The current COVID-19 pandemic has likely resulted in sporting events and tournaments being canceled, postponed, or held without or with restricted spectators around the world. A combination of measures including prompt vaccination with the beneficial impact of the vaccines in reducing the severity of disease, advances in treatment, expanded use of diagnostics and better implementation of public-health policies are a necessity. Following this implementation, a transition toward normality could be expected when the mortality rate of COVID-19 simulates the average influenza statistics, with public-health measures continuing to play an important role worldwide. Conclusion. The authors believe that COVID-19 will be endemic in the human population, similar to seasonal influenza, and that COVID-19 vaccines will be included as an add-on to seasonal influenza vaccinations, being administered every winter for at least the next few decades. With adequate vaccination, the sporting world will be able to withstand the challenges and resume global events, returning to pre-Covid levels of normalcy.","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42169753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Misconduct in sport science research is a detrimental practice, as it affects data reliability and decreases the validity of all research in the long run. Objectives. The objective of this narrative review is to identify the main problems of misconduct in sport science research and point out effective prevention methods. Methods. A literature search was undertaken in \"Web of Science\" and \"PUBMED\" databases, where several terms identified a priori and related to Boolean operators were combined, resulting in a total of 181 records and 19 documents found by cross-references that were subsequently selected. Results. As a result, we found that most abusive behavior consists of results fabrication, manipulation, and plagiarism. It is noted that, in modern times, there is more pressure on data publication, also, easy Internet access seems to have increased misconduct behaviors. Meanwhile, there are several studies focused on identifying misconduct and ensure research validity, such as students/professors' characteristics; analysis of academic and national procedures; action procedures, and strategies when identified abusive behavior. Conclusion. The present investigation has relapsed a lot on the identification of profiles of researchers who carry out misconduct and have used mostly one methodology, in this case, questionnaires, of which one can question the validity of the answers given due to the susceptibility of the subject itself. Therefore, we believe that the focus of the investigation to solve this problem must be changed and who can answer the following question: how can we identify data manipulation, fabrication, or falsification during its collection or treatment?","PeriodicalId":43187,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Applied Sport Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43419003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
