Italian -a plurals and Albanian neuters are associated with a cluster of properties often thought to characterize low plurals: application to a restricted set of lexical bases, meaning idiosyncrasies, association with (feminine) gender and agreement in the singular with the finite verb. Current analyses associate count Ns (both singular and plural) with a specialized node while treating mass Ns as default. I argue that mass Ns are associated with a specialized feature [aggr] (Albanian neuter) – and that a divisibility feature [part] for plural can attach to both count and mass bases (Italian -a ). The properties of low number depend on the properties of the Class position, including the fact that it is low enough to select gender and also to combine with a different Num, yielding mixed agreement.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":"19 1","pages":"127-157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42857021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L’estudi del genere i del nombre gramaticals s’ha abordat des de diverses perspectives teoriques i encara no hi ha una visio generalment acceptada i ben definida de la naturalesa d’aquestes dues categories. El terme genere s’aplica a un ventall de fenomens gramaticals que inclouen la classificacio dels noms en classes flexives i les regles sintactiques de concordanca i acord . Com passa amb el genere gramatical, el nombre gramatical es pot realitzar mitjancant la flexio del nom i/o la concordanca que forca en altres elements. No obstant aixo, a diferencia del genere gramatical, te efectes interpretatius estables, clars i sistematics, relacionats amb la quantitat del predicat que denota el nom, i, per tant, tambe del referent quan l’expressio nominal es referencial. El nombre i el genere son trets fonamentals els noms i constitueixen algunes de les propietats definitories del llenguatge natural o hi contribueixen.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44364251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La contribucio principal d’aquest article es argumentar que les expressions que fan referencia a classe i que son morfologicament singulars son sintagmes nominals sense nombre gramatical. Dit amb altres paraules, argumentem que la millor manera d’analitzar aquestes expressions, a les quals ens referim amb el terme de classes definides, seguint la proposta terminologica de Borik i Espinal (2012, 2015), es postulant unes estructures nominals que no tenen Nombre ni sintactic ni semantic. Basem la nostra analisi en el postulat teoric que, semanticament, el Nombre es un operador que realitza propietats de classes en propietats d’objectes i que les classes definides no activen aquest operador. Mostrem de quina manera l’analisi que proposem per a les classes definides tambe permet d’explicar les peculiaritats en l’ordre de mots que trobem en rus en les expressions que fan referencia a classes modificades.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":"19 1","pages":"231-260"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48127915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Centrant-nos en el grec (modern), observem que els noms d’animals tenen diferents «generes per defecte», a diferencia dels noms que descriuen els humans ( noms d’humans ), que per defecte nomes poden ser masculins. En principi, aixo sembla un problema per a la idea generalment acceptada que el masculi es la forma no marcada en llengues com el grec, pero ho expliquem afirmant que aquests casos impliquen generes no interpretables, es a dir generes gramaticals. Tot i aixo, les nostres observacions revelen diverses diferencies fonamentals entre els noms d’animals i els noms d’humans, que requereixen una investigacio teorica mes completa.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43286963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Marti hypothesizes that the number marking of nouns in this construction is the result of the interaction between the compositional semantics of number features, as in Harbour (2014), and that of cardinal numerals, as in Scontras (2014) and others. I argue below that Yimas and Hopi conform straightforwardly to the predictions such an extension makes for singular-dual-plural languages. I also argue that languages like Imere and Ljubljana Slovenian conform to the predictions once a proper understanding of complex numerals (in Ljubljana Slovenian) and number prefixes (in Imere) is in place. I borrow and adapt ideas from Ionin & Matushansky’s (2006, 2018) analysis of complex numerals in my analysis of Ljubljana Slovenian complex numerals.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44933606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Es cert que el que determina la tria del genere son principalment els elements lexics ‘controladors’, pero els fenomens que estudiem suggereixen que aixo no hauria de justificar la comprensio teorica del genere com una propietat primaria dels noms, que es comparteix mitjancant la concordanca sintactica. Argumentem que hi ha evidencia empirica per interpretar el genere com l’expressio morfologica de les relacions de concordanca. En concret, investiguem el marcatge morfologic de dues classes de cardinals i argumentem que es possible identificar elements semantics estables entre diferents llengues, els quals formen de manera composicional les classes de numerals documentats. Adoptem marc teoric de la Nanosintaxi (Starke 2009 i altres) com a model morfologic que, quan s’aplica a les estructures semantiques que proposem, ens proporciona els patrons de marcatge rellevants. El model que desenvolupem es basa de manera general en la idea que els components semantics estan estructurats de manera uniforme entre les llengues i que tots s’han de pronunciar, encara que hi ha diferencies en la manera com els pronuncien les diferents llengues. Tots els cardinals comparteixen una escala subjacent basada en els nombres naturals, pero difereixen en la quantitat d’operacions que s’hi poden aplicar.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47444027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

S’hi mostra que el pluratiu es una tercera entitat complexa que resulta d’un proces de convergencia dels trets (i/o categories) de nombre i genere. Es comporta com una expressio sintactica que denota grups i mostra un comportament dual, ja que legitima predicacions i anafores singulars o plurals o alterna la concordanca femenina singular amb la masculina plural. En aquest sentit estricte, el pluratiu es mostra com ‘u’ i ‘molts’ alhora: denota la unitat sencera, pero tambe permet accedir a les (moltes) parts de la unitat. Establim una comparacio entre el pluratiu i els numerals de grup eslaus, d’una banda, i les llengues amb classificadors de grup, com el xines, de l’altra. S’argumenta que el singulatiu tambe es una entitat complexa que contrasta amb els col·lectius generics i els singulars normals. En les teories serials, aixo ha comportat sovint un enfocament parametric de la derivacio: algunes llengues comencen per dalt ( top-down ), amb l’assignacio de l’accent primari en primer lloc, mentre que d’altres comencen per baix ( bottom-up ), en les quals la construccio del peu precedeix l’assignacio de l’accent primari. Aquest article examina dues llengues (cahuilla i yine) que han estat considerades top-down en la teoria metrica basada en regles, i demostra que cap de les dues requereix aquest tipus d’analisi en el marc del serialisme harmonic, una versio derivacional de la teoria de l’optimitat. Prenent aquestes llengues com a base, l’article soste que la nocio general i intuitiva del que fa que una llengua sigui top-down —l’accent primari independent del no primari— es massa simplificada. Els casos estudiats palesen la importancia del marc teoric adoptat i de les prediccions tipologiques en l’establiment de l’ordre d’assignacio de l’accent primari i no primari.
