Presentem una primera explicacio formal detallada de com les posicions de subjecte de l’angles antic que son sensibles a l’EI es poden explicar en el context d’un sistema OV que comencava a ser progressivament VO, i a continuacio esbossem els desenvolupaments en la sintaxi del subjecte durant l’angles mitja i el principi de l’angles modern, que ens porten fins a l’angles actual. Amb el rerefons d’aquests desenvolupaments diacronics, defensem que l’angles ha presentat, d’una manera o altra, posicions de subjecte sensibles a l’EI al llarg de tota la historia i que, com defensa Kiss (1996), encara ho fa.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71035401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Martins","doi":"10.5565/REV/CATJL.35","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5565/REV/CATJL.35","url":null,"abstract":"This paper proposes that object scrambling both in Old and Contemporary Portuguese is a strategy to create appropriate information focus configurations. Essentially, it makes the rightmost constituent that would otherwise bear the neutral sentence nuclear stress escape it. In narrow information focus structures this amounts to defocusing of the scrambled constituent. In broad information focus sentences the scrambled constituent is prosodically and pragmatically demoted with respect to salience. Thus, leftward displacement of the scrambled constituent either allows another constituent to acquire discourse/informational prominence or creates a ‘flat’ structure in that respect. The informational import of the scrambling strategy is constant throughout the history of Portuguese. But while Old Portuguese allowed both short scrambling (i.e. adjunction to VP) and middle scrambling (i.e. raising to multiple Spec,TP), only short scrambling is a grammatical option in Contemporary European Portuguese. Hence, Old Portuguese scrambling could derive SOV sentences whereas Contemporary European Portuguese scrambling maintains the object in postverbal position. The view that scrambling may induce loss or downgrading of discourse/ informational prominence as it removes constituents from the clause-final position to which such prominence is assigned is supported by cross-linguistic evidence (Taylor & Pintzuk 2010 for Old English, Pinkster 1990 and Devine & Stephens 2006 for Latin).","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71035124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a synchronic standpoint, information packaging is jointly conveyed by semantics, prosody and syntax. In contrast, diachronic linguistics lacks the evidence of prosodic information, but it can still rely on the relation between discourse semantics and syntax in old written texts, as well as on the comparison with synchronic data, to set light on the phenomena involved in syntactic changes driven by information structural configurations. Concerning language change, it is generally accepted that the focus of investigation is on I-language and that language acquirers select cues that are robustly represented in main clauses of the Primary Linguistic Data of their environment so","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71035454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En concret, aquest estudi se centra en els processos de focalitzacio i les operacions de moviment que s’hi relacionen: el moviment a la periferia esquerra i el trasllat del verb. Tal com s’ha argumentat en la bibliografia sobre el tema, no es tracta en realitat d’elements expletius, sino d’elements amb un determinat valor discursiu pertanyents a la Periferia Esquerra de l’oracio. Revisem les propostes d’analisi que se n’han fet i explorem la possibilitat que el seu valor discursiu pugui derivar-se d’un anterior comportament com a expletiu via un proces de gramaticalitzacio. Descartem aquesta possibilitat i plantegem una analisi en dos temps. En primer lloc considerem que la relacio entre aquests elements i la resta de l’oracio es una relacio predicativa mediatitzada per un element (abstracte o explicit) de coincidencia central. El valor contrastiu es deriva de les seves propietats lexiques i dels seus trets formals. En aquest article investiguem la relacio entre el canvi sintactic i l’estatus informatiu en alternances de l’ordre verb-objecte, OV i VO, en angles antic i al principi de l’angles mitja. La hipotesi principal es que el canvi sintactic i les restriccions sobre l’estatus informatiu son independents. L’analisi que presentem es basa en 1500 frases AuxV i VAux de set textos de l’angles antic i tres textos de l’angles mitja. Considerem tres variables independents que influeixen en la posicio dels objectes dins de la frase: el text, l’estatus informatiu i la complexitat sintactica. Desenvolupem un model quantitatiu del canvi sintactic al llarg del temps, que procedeix independentment de la variacio sintactica sincronica deguda a l’estatus informatiu i a la complexitat sintactica; a continuacio testem el model amb les dades de l’angles antic i mitja i tambe amb les dades historiques de l’islandes que mostren els mateixos tipus de variacio. En llengues romaniques, a grans trets, no apareixen mai amb verbs de manera de moviment. Centrant-nos basicament en l’holandes, en aquest article presentem una analisi de les construccions direccionals resultatives i la representacio sintactica de la manera of moviment que se centra en els postulats principals seguents: ( a ) les construccions direccionals resultatives amb verbs de manera de moviment es poden construir, en principi, amb dues estructures, una amb el verb lleuger GO i l’altra amb el verb lleuger GET; ( b ) mentre que tots dos verbs lleugers prenen un complement d’oracio reduida, GET tambe pot prendre un complement encapcalat per una particula; ( c ) la particula de les construccions amb GET pot legitimar una P direccional nul·la quan tenim una estructura de SPs direccionals construits amb una adposicio no inherentment direccional, cosa que dona ordre preposicional; ( d ) l’absencia d’una particula en les construccions amb GO forca que o be la P direccional nul·la dels SPs direccional construits amb aposicions no inherentment direccionals s’incorpori a GO o be la P locativa del seu complement s’elevi a la preposicio nul·la; ( e ) els verbs de manera de moviment tenen un component MANERA adjuntat a GO/GET; ( f ) la incorporacio de P a GO/GET modificat amb MANERA es inadmissible (a causa d’una prohibicio d’adjuncio multiple a un mateix nucli; ( g ) aixi, doncs, en les estructures GO+MANERA, la P direccional nul·la es pot legitimar nomes si s’hi eleva la P locativa; ( h ) quan la P locativa s’eleva a la P direccional tenim l’ordre de mots posposicional en holandes, mentre que si no s’hi eleva tenim l’ordre preposicional.","PeriodicalId":43160,"journal":{"name":"Catalan Journal of Linguistics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71036558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
