{"title":"Sophocles' Tragedy of Philoctetes In The Light of Aristotle's Poetics","authors":"Sercan Özinan","doi":"10.46641/medeniyetsanat.1110231","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46641/medeniyetsanat.1110231","url":null,"abstract":"Besides his philosophical discussions on ethics, aesthetics and politics; Aristotle, one of the most prominent philosophers of Ancient Greek, also examines tragedy, which is the prepotent form of theatre in his era, and the free will, moral values and actual intentions of tragic characters in his ‘Poetics’; thus, cracking the door open to a formal discussion. The principle of unity of action of ancient Greek tragedies, which constitutes the building block of modern theatre, was first manifested in this work of Aristotle's. Sophocles, who lived almost a century before Aristotle and who was the most influential tragedy writer of the fifth century BC, authored works that correspond to the ideal form of tragedy discussed in the Poetics; so much so that he won the first prize many times in the dramatic festivals of the time can be construed as evidence to this. The tragedy of 'Philoctetes', which is the last known work of Sophocles and claimed to be staged and directed by the writer himself, is described by various authorities to be his best-written work. This study is going to explain the core terms in Aristotle's Poetics and trace their counterparts in Sophocles’s Philoctetes. The concept of found space means; the existing buildings which are not used or abandoned in an idle manner, and then they are transformed into a different area of use or rebuilt for a different function. In general, the existing structure is preserved, and the structures are given meaning, especially with the variety of materials. In the last decade of the twentieth century, there have been developments about public history and conservation around the world. In the concept that Andreas Huyssen calls \"insatiable museum culture\", many new places and objects have been identified as historically important, and many space applications have been made for commemoration and re-functioning applications. The range of meanings sought in the remains of the past has also expanded in this context. Politically, the concept of conservation has become populist, while commercially, heritage has become part of a global industry. There are social, physical and cultural changes in societies, and these changes are also reflected in the spaces in line with the needs. Found spaces, in a contemporary language, it can be changed in function without losing the stylistic features of the period in which they were built, so the building can be given a sustainable feature. When the idle buildings lose their current function, it is required to pay attention to the design of the old building considering the new purpose of use without deteriorating its character, originality, textural and structural bond. At this stage, the structure; It is important to renew it without breaking it from the past. Within the scope of qualitative research, it was investigated how the space was re-functionalized by using ceramic materials in the found spaces; Project-design-aesthetic dimensions were evaluated. The country which values its cultural heritage, however, continues its traditional pottery production today. Traditional terracotta production in the country dates back to ancient times, and clay soils are extracted from natural beds in many different regions; it turns into utensils, crafts, and art. One of the most used terracotta productions is Bhar, which is disposable teacups. Today, terracotta cups for drinking tea are in high demand by people throughout the country. Indian teas with rooted tea culture and different tastes are mostly drunk in Bhars, which are preferably shaped on a potter's lathe with traditional methods. These terracotta cups, which are fired in traditional kilns at low temperatures and made ready for use, are produced daily by potters. In this research, the tea culture unique to India and the terracotta Bhar cups included in this culture and taken for granted by the society were examined. The concept of “new media” that emerged with the digital transformation has brought a new dimension to the language of communication and design. In today's visual communication era, it is seen that moving images gain importance rather than still images, so moving images make communication stronger and more effective. Because classical methods are not enough to affect the masses with fast lifestyle and fast consumption habits. Today, depending on the increase in people's interest in digital screens, designs are also shaped according to these screens, and it is seen that motion graphics are becoming increasingly important in visual communication design (graphic design). \u0000Today's visual culture consists of hybrid and moving image forms rather than pure and static forms. Combining the basic principles and techniques of different disciplines ensures the production of unique works. Graphic design, cinematography, animation etc. Original graphic design applications, which are formed by the interaction of different disciplines such as, where different content (multimedia components such as illustration, photography, animation, video and sound) and basic principles and techniques are mixed, are among the most obvious examples of this. \u0000In this research, the usage areas of motion graphics in new media, the basic concepts, basic principles and techniques of motion graphics are emphasized. In this context, the 100th Anniversary Promotional Example of the August 30 Victory Day was developed. This developed application was supported with visual examples by describing how motion graphics are realized according to the basic principles and techniques. \u0000Considering that motion graphics can be used more frequently in the future according to the data obtained in the research, it can be said that more research should be done on academic motion graphics and interactive motion graphic design. It has been tried to be developed by producing ideas on it. The conditions, lives and spaces of the 'Covid-19', which has recently taken the whole world under its influence, waiting to be solved and turned into a global problem, are negatively affecting lives and spaces. The parallel progression of the obligatory time spent indoors due to the increase in the disease has made users and designers think again about the necessity of examining the space in a new dimension, different from its own scope. This situation has given birth to new demands, needs and requirements in the context and scope of the concept of space and has provided the opportunity for designers to look at the space from a different perspective in terms of the reconfiguration and use of the space. For this reason, while the article originally addressed the concept of space in the context of consciousness from a different perspective, it also included the concept of general space, evaluated and developed the subject through a sample. The method of the article begins with a literature review, which is one of the research methods that researchers often use and lays the groundwork for scientific research and studies. Based on the literature reviews, it has been determined that the concept of space has been examined from many different angles, and it has been observed that the space is divided into different groups in the context of the user, and it is called private and public spaces.
