By defining the registering of a musical theme as a subjective occurrence, Proust avoids naming any single model; moreover, in the course of writing Recherche, he constantly adds new musical associations. On the one hand, Proust blurs references to his starting point—Saint-Saens’s op. 75—and on the other hand, he manages to individuate the “petite phrase” by superimposing characteristics onto it. While allowing Swann as listener to formulate concrete associations regarding the imaginary “petite phrase,” he stimulates the reader, conversely, to imagine varying kinds of music to these associations.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69134558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The strings take over the vocal, wind, and string parts respectively. Whereas the quintet version of Fidelio (1815) is complete and includes the melodrama and its spoken text, the quartet versions of Rossini’s Tancredi, Otello, La Gazza ladra, Mose in Egitto, La Dame du lac, Semiramide, Moise en Egypte are lacking some numbers, while long dramatic scenes are often shortened and inserted arias extended. The technical demands on the players are, with occasional exceptions, equal to those found in the opera score. Performed by male instrumentalists, these transcriptions were performed in private homes, salons, and provincial theaters that lacked a full orchestra.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":"42-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78532830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aiming to dazzle their audiences with their showmanship, they constantly embellished their extravagant costumes and ingratiated themselves to their fans with capriciousness, vanity, and arrogance. Rivalries with colleagues were characterized by jealousy and envy, while their relationship to audiences was fraught with fear and counterbalanced by paid claques. Due to their extraordinary talent and sex appeal, they were mainly admired and adored by women, which led to veritable personality cults that in turn conditioned the interaction between these musicians and their female fans.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69134277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The body’s ability to memorize movements, which are activated externally and informs actions like singing, is called cheironomy in music theory. This ensured an oral-gestic tradition before music was written down in mensural and neumatic notation, a process that was initially welcomed as a rationalizing advancement that fascilitated memory and made a more precise codification of musical meaning visable and readily accessible. The question remains, however, whether notation represents progress compared to a performance using hand gestures (whereby the oral-mimetic impulses of music are mostly lost), or whether present day conducting is able to surpass these original impulses.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69134406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
