Officially, “Hispanic or Latino” residents were 44.3% of the population—a percentage that has grown steadily since at least 1980, when it was less than 9%. One way this change is reflected is through the composition of the enterprises in Ossining’s main commercial district; in particular, through each store’s faҫade sign. This billboard-like display serves to identify and advertise the store. But what is it advertising, really? Why are some of the signs monolingual and others multilingual? Can diverse nationalities stake out a place for themselves through their signs? By analysing both their language(s) and paralanguage, some conclusions can be made about their (intended) meaning, their (intended) audience, and about the shifting language ideology in the village. The faҫade signs capture the diverse ethnic make-up of this village, constructing a particular public space and revealing a dynamic linguistic landscape.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"189 - 211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45924778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En las tres novelas, estos actos/conceptos subvierten presupuestos que la tradición filosófica, de Anaxágoras a Steiner, ha venido sosteniendo sobre los vínculos existentes entre entendimiento y orden, así como entre la interpretación y la exteriorización verbal de dicho orden. Desde la sospecha levreriana hacia esta primacía de la razón (Derrida, Jung, Freud), se sostiene que en estas tres ficciones la realidad se presenta como incomprensible y que, (de)construyendo al paso la trama, la pulsión interpretativa de sus narradores surge creativamente de esta imposibilidad.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"173 - 188"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48176899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La principal fuente utilizada es la Gaceta de Puerto Rico, el periódico oficial en la época, donde se recogen 111 anuncios relativos a mujeres esclavas. La información obtenida ha sido analizada cualitativa y cuantitativamente para concluir que las mujeres esclavas eran una parte esencial de la sociedad de la época, que trabajaban tanto en el campo como en las casas, de lavanderas, cocineras, planchadoras o nodrizas. De hecho, según el censo de 1841, el 47% de los esclavos eran esclavas, y había más mulatas y negras libres que hombres de su mismo grupo. Igualmente, hemos constatado que una parte de las esclavas portaban tatuajes tradicionales de sus pueblos de origen, que otras llegaron a formar familias, y que algunas, desgraciadamente, fueron asesinadas. En definitiva, este artículo pretende recuperar las experiencias vitales de las esclavas de Puerto Rico, un grupo extremadamente vulnerable que merece ser recordado y cuya memoria debemos preservar.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"109 - 124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48239547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its author was a Dominican missionary, Dionisio de Zúñiga, although his work is based on earlier dictionaries of his predecessors. This paper analyses Zúñiga’s dictionary in the context of Dominican evangelizing tradition. Whereas the descriptions of certain lexical entries prove that the author was familiar with the culture and customs of the Poqomchi’ people, some other terms, specifically those denoting pre-Columbian deities and native religious concepts, seem to be derived from earlier missionary texts including Domingo de Vico’s famous Theologia Indorum. These intertextualities confirm the intellectual continuity among Dominican missionaries in Highland Guatemala during the early colonial period.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"212 - 226"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49578240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sender publicó la novela El lugar del hombre. Casi veinte años después, en 1958, decidió reeditarla con el título El lugar de un hombre. No fue el único cambio de envergadura. Este artículo pretende analizar las supresiones que el autor realizó y, al mismo tiempo, tratar de aportar claves sobre los motivos que le movieron a ello en relación con sus circunstancias biográficas, posicionamientos políticos y su condición de exiliado. Tomaremos como fuentes las distintas ediciones de la obra y los informes, expedientes de censura y otros materiales conservados en el Archivo General de la Administración. Con todo, queremos explorar y discernir cuáles fueron los factores que determinaron que la novela no se publicase en España hasta 1974. Ese año coincide, como veremos, con la organización de una “operación retorno” que favorecía el regreso de Sender a España. Pretendemos, en definitiva, reflexionar sobre por qué Josep Vergés, editor de Destino, no consiguió la aprobación de El lugar de un hombre hasta 1974 y qué supone esto a la hora de abordar, hoy, la producción literaria de Sender y el canon literario del franquismo.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"157 - 172"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48474227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are several areas that pique interest and warrant further investigation, but, overall, Fisher’s work analyses the nuances of the prison narrative effectively and thoroughly. She recognizes these texts as a direct reaction to the Transition, and frames them within their broader contexts, such as the Communist life writing model and the need to confront the injustice that the authors were subjected to both during and after the dictatorship. The result is a fresh and valuable addition to the field of Spanish life writing, which provides a phenomenal introduction to these women’s stories, ensuring that their voices continue to be heard while also laying the groundwork for further investigation in this area.","PeriodicalId":42561,"journal":{"name":"Hispanic Research Journal-Iberian and Latin American Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"242 - 245"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43487159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the pantheon of celebrated modern writers is entered at a cost. Acolytes abound, bringing with them their literary proclivities: some biographists, others indispensable archival detectives, dedicated geneticists, or committed textualists determined to offer close readings including those, but few, who do so with recourse to the instrumentalities of complex critical theories. Rui Gonçalves Miranda, undoubtedly a pioneer of the latter approach, has guaranteed, in Personal Infinitive: Inflecting Fernando Pessoa, that it will be primarily those with an already deep awareness of Pessoa’s textuality, and an open-mindedness and readiness to deploy the most appropriate analytical tools, who will rise to the challenge of this ground-breaking study. Miranda’s engagement with the thinking of Mallarm e, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Barthes, Derrida, Eco, Barbara Johnson, and Terry Eagleton is never incidental and, in each case, the insights drawn upon are applied the better to explicate—never to explain away—the toughest nodal tropes exploited, inexhaustibly in Pessoa’s poetry and, judiciously explored here, his numerous other writings.
