Assuming elementary direction of arrival (DOA) or location estimation of PU devices can be carried out in the SU devices, appropriate directional transmission utilizing e.g. antenna arrays and null-steering can then be deployed to avoid interference by steering nulls towards the PUs. In this paper, we study such transmitter digital beamforming and null-steering under practical limitations of the associated radio frequency (RF) circuits, namely the amplitude and phase mismatches between the in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) rails of the parallel up-conversion chains. Closed-form analysis of the available beamforming and null-steering capabilities is first provided, showing that the transmitter null-steering capabilities are heavily degraded due to RF circuit imperfections. Motivated by this, we will then propose and formulate a widely-linear (WL) digital beamforming and null-steering solution which is shown to efficiently suppress the RF circuit imperfection effects from the radiation pattern. Based on the obtained results, the developed solution can provide efficient null-steering and interference suppression characteristics, despite of the imperfections in the RF circuits, and can thus enable, e.g., the use of cost-efficient RF chains in the SU transmitters.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126408479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To deal with this problem we apply game-theoretical tools. We model the situation as a game between a Scanner and an Invader where the Invader faces a dilemma: the more bandwidth the Invader attempts to use leads to a larger payoff if he is not detected, but at the same time also increases the probability of being detected and thus fined. Similarly, the Scanner faces a dilemma: the wider the bandwidth scanned, the higher the probability of detecting the Invader, but at the expense of increasing the cost of building the scanning system. The equilibrium strategies are found explicitly and reveal interesting properties. In particular, we have found a discontinuous dependence of the equilibrium strategies on the network parameters, fine and the type of the Invader's award. This discontinuity on fine means that the network provider has to take into account a human factor since some threshold values of fine could be very sensible for the Invader, while in other situations simply increasing the fine has minimal deterrence impact. Also we show how different reward types for the Invader (e.g. motivated by using different type of application, say, video-streaming or downloading files) can be incorporated into scanning strategy to increase its efficiency.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127363835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, this paper focuses on the spectrum selection problem when a number of radio links has to be established in a CR network to support applications with different bit rate requirements. A novel strategy based on a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is proposed, whose target is to maximize a reward function that reflects the suitability of the available spectrum blocks to the application requirements. The proposed strategy combines partial observations of the interference state in the different spectrum blocks together with a statistical characterization of the interference dynamics. Thanks to this feature, the performance comparison of the algorithm against different reference strategies reveals that it achieves a very similar performance than a strategy operating under full knowledge of the real interference state of all the spectrum blocks, while at the same time it has much less requirements in terms of measurement needs and associated signaling.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"95 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134097472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In WMUE attacks, a malicious user emulates wireless microphone (WM) signals in order to block secondary users. Existing work on WMUE attack detection deals with single channel senario. Although multi-channel WM (MCWM) systems are common, detecting WMUE attacks under a multi-channel setting in noisy environments has not been well studied and the existing solution for single channel case cannot be directly applied. In a practical multi-channel WM system, the audio signals on different channels mix with each other and are contaminated by noises, which introduce great challenges on WMUE attack detection. We propose a novel multi-channel WMUE attack detection scheme which is based on the crosscorrelation between the demodulated FM signal and the acoustic signal. The audio interferences, audio noises, and RF noises are all resisted by the cross-correlation. To reduce computation complexity, we propose a 1.5-bit FM demodulator whose outputs are represented by only 0, 1 and -1. Moreover, we set up a MCWM system and developed a hardware based prototype to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. Experimental results show that, the proposed scheme can effectively detect multi-channel WMUE attacks within 0.25 second with detection rate larger than 0.9 and false alarm rate lower than 0.1 under low signal-to-noise ratios.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"122 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134393196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new frontend features separate TX and RX paths with automatic directionality switching and in-hardware energy detection. Equipped with a standard antenna port at the input side, and a fully configurable transmit chain controlled through a user-accessible microcontroller, this whitespace converter (WSC) with commercial off-the-shelf components is particularly suitable for cognitive radio (CR) research. We discuss the specific challenges in the design of a WSC for 802.11 WLAN routers. The main advantage of such an innovative secondary spectrum marketplace over the current state of the art is that it reduces the complexity of spectrum management by removing governmental agencies from being directly involved in the completion of such transactions. The proposed model allows spectrum consumers to sell, lease or transfer the access rights to a chunk of spectrum by disaggregating, partitioning or time-sharing the corresponding spectrum in their possession. Further, we also outline an architecture in which such exclusive access rights to a portion of the spectrum could be used to regulate radio device transmission to enable proactive enforcement of the spectrum usage policies and to deter unauthorized transmissions. Overall our secondary spectrum marketplace model has the potential to reduce cost, increase spectrum efficiency, and to simplify the task of spectrum management.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127308912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analytic model is useful for call admission control (CAC) decision in cognitive radio network (CRN) when there is a certain sensing error as well as certain quality of service (QoS) requirements for both primary and cognitive radio (CR) users. Using our developed model, we compare the performance of a random transmission protocol with that of the traditional deterministic transmission protocol. For a single SU, if the sensing results are shared early, there is more time for data transmission, which improves the throughput. In cases with multiple SUs sending early sensing results, it is more likely that the sensing results will be sent simultaneously over the same signaling channel. In this situation, the conflicts that occur affect both the sensing performance and throughput. For this situation, importance of when to share is taken into account, for which we have modeled spectrum sensing as an evolutionary game. The strategy set for each player in our game model contains not only whether to share its sensing results, but also when to share. The payoff of each player is defined based on the throughput, which considers the influence of the time spent both on sensing and sharing. We prove the existence of the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS). In addition, we propose a practical algorithm for each secondary user to converge at the ESS. We conduct experiments on our GNU/USRP testbed. The experimental results verify for our model, including the convergence to the ESS.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129968145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CRLH LWA consists of a cascade of metamaterial unit cells, periodically modulated using varactor diodes. By changing the voltages across series and shunt varactors, the antenna is able to uniformly steer its radiation pattern. The proposed modified MUSIC algorithm, uses both antenna's input ports to estimate the DoA. Conventionally, the MUSIC algorithm needs to calculate the correlation matrix from the output vector of an array of antenna elements. In this work, we show in detail how the correlation matrix can be computed when using leaky-wave antennas. The algorithm is demonstrated using LWA in an anechoic chamber and the estimated DoA results are in good agreement with the predicted angles.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129423623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
