Taking this into account, we address the optimal rate adaptation problem of a cognitive radio (CR) link. A secondary user (SU) link detects an idle channel and starts the transmission with the goal of transmitting a given amount of data packets within a given time. During the transmission, and taking into account frame retransmission, the transmitter dynamically adapts the frames rate, from a finite number of available rates. If the PU accesses the channel, the SU immediately stops the transmission. The problem is formulated as an episodic Markov decision process (MDP). We show that selecting the best stationary policy (using the same rate for the whole transmission) can perform close to optimal.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125531315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the nonlinearity of the high Power Amplifier (PA), this results in interferences and/or low power efficiency. In this paper, we propose to use a joint approach for PAPR reduction and memoryless predistortion by adding signal in order to improve PA linearity and efficiency performances depending on the radio environment. First, the radio environment is sensed and informations such as signal's PAPR, channel estimation, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and battery level are collected. Accordingly, a decision engine updates additional signals for PAPR reduction and predistortion in order to meet targeted linearity and power efficiency requirements. Ideally suited for Cognitive Radio (CR) systems, this dynamic joint approach by adding signal is simulated and validated through two scenarios represented on two examples of radio environment. The PAPR reduction performance is evaluated by the Complementary Cumulative Density Function (CCDF) and the PA linearity by Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) criteria.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133525032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An SU searches for channels not currently occupied by PUs, it estimates their link quality and it aggregates the resources found available for transmission, by means of multi-channel access. Typically, optimal stopping algorithms decide when to interrupt the exploration phase and start exploiting the channels for transmission, with the goal of throughput maximization. In this paper we recognize the importance of evaluating the performance of throughput-efficient multi-channel access algorithms in terms of delay and data rate, which constitute fundamental traffic requirements for mobile applications. Through extensive simulations, we have derived guidelines for supporting SUs with stringent traffic requirements of delay, jitter and guaranteed data rate in the current multi-channel algorithms under multiple CRN scenarios. The encouraging results of the conducted performance evaluation motivate our interest in further researching multi-channel access algorithms for the optimization of application-specific requirements.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132648982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study energy-efficient link adaptation for the secondary users (SUs) with heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements in an interference-limited CR system. Two classes of SUs with different QoS are considered: delay-sensitive SUs (DS-SUs) and delay-tolerant SUs (DT-SUs). We focus on energy efficiency (EE) maximization taking into account the SUs' heterogeneous QoS and PU interference constraint. The problem of EE maximization is formulated as a nonlinear fractional programming problem, which is transformed into an equivalent parametric programming problem. Moreover, optimal solution to joint subcarrier assignment and power allocation is derived with the bisection method and dual decomposition method (DDM) in convex optimization theory. Simulation results illustrate the significant performance improvement of our scheme over an existing one which aims at maximizing system throughput rather than EE.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114301234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a novel client-centric heterogeneous spectrum access mechanism to deal with these new challenges. All clients in a cell would not have to use the same channel to communicate with access point when there is no common available channel among these clients. In order to achieve channel agreement among nodes on different channels, a new MAC protocol is proposed with no need of common control channel. Considering that AP can only work on one channel at a time, we use a novel technique, subcarrier coding, to enable it to monitor multiple spectrum bands simultaneously. Each client can select its best channel based on local environment and requirement independently. Promising simulation results show that this new access mechanism not only resolve the problem of lacking common data channel in single cell, but also minimizes conflict significantly even in the case of a large number of clients.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124978078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since geostationary satellite terminals have predetermined propagation characteristics so that they always point towards the geostationary satellite, the interference received by the satellite terminals from the terrestrial Base Station (BS) is confined in an angular sector. Based on this a priori knowledge, we propose transmit beamforming techniques at the BS to maximize the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) towards the desired Secondary User (SU) and to mitigate the interference towards the primary satellite terminals. Different types of Linearly Constrained Minimum Variance (LCMV) techniques have been proposed for our considered scenario where the exact locations and the number of satellite terminals within a specific angular sector are not known while designing the beamformer. Furthermore, an optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the SU rate and it is shown that the worst case SU rate depends on the Primary User (PU) distance, PU interference threshold and the angular separation of the desired SU from the region of interest.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126433749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we consider using energy measurements from sectorized antenna to estimate RSS and DoA of a primary user. Abstracting from practical antenna types, we define a sectorized antenna as an antenna that can be set to different operating modes, each of which resulting in a selectivity of those signals that arrive from within a certain, continuous range of angles, i.e. a sector. We first characterize the achievable performance of RSS and DoA estimations using energy measurements from sectorized antennas by means of the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB), which provides a lower bound on the estimation accuracy of any unbiased estimator. We then propose a practical RSS and DoA estimator, namely the simplified least squares (SLS) algorithm. The SLS algorithm minimizes a cost function obtained from two largest energy measurements among all sectors, and its accuracy closely approaches the CRB. Simulation results studying the impact of important system parameters, such as SNR, number of sectors and number of samples, on the achievable accuracy specified by the CRB and the SLS algorithm are presented.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134390995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensing receiver RF front-end is assumed to deploy wideband multi-channel IQ down-conversion which is well-suited for highly-integrated circuit implementations. Such RF front-end is, however, also prone to several RF impairments, such as IQ imbalance, which leads to mirror-frequency cross-talk and can thus considerably degrade the sensing performance. Assuming that the individual channel sensing is building on energy detection, we first analyze the spectrum sensing performance of the multichannel sensing receiver in terms of false alarm and detection probabilities. The analysis shows that IQ imbalance is especially harmful in terms of false alarms stemming from the mirror-channel crosstalk, and is greatly emphasized when the overall down-converted signal has high dynamic range. Motivated by this, we present an efficient digital compensation scheme, called energy correction method, where the sensing statistics of any particular channel are properly adjusted based on the corresponding mirror-channel statistics such that the effect of the crosstalk is minimized. Optimum minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) solution for the energy correction processing is first derived, complemented then with a practical low-complexity sample estimator. Extensive computer simulations demonstrate that under various parameter settings for IQ imbalance and receiver dynamic range, the proposed scheme yields sensing performance practically identical to the IQ imbalance free reference performance. Thus the proposed method offers feasible RF impairment-aware energy detection solution for practical multichannel sensing receivers.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128300967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implementing sharing regimes on a non-opportunistic basis means that sharing agreements must be implemented. To have meaning, those agreements must be enforceable. We make this discussion more concrete by reasoning about enforcement in a particular spectrum band (1695-1710 MHz) that is currently being proposed for sharing between commercial services (LTE) and an incumbent spectrum user in the US. We examine three enforcement approaches, exclusion zones, protection zones and pure ex post and consider their implications in terms of cost elements, opportunity cost, and their adaptability.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125210184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the development and implementation of a split-functionality architecture for a contention-based carrier-sensing MAC, in which some of the functions reside on an FPGA (field programmable gate array) and others reside in the GPP. We provide an FPGA-based implementation of a carrier sensing block and develop two versions of a CSMA MAC protocol based upon this block. We experimentally test the performance of the resulting protocols in a multihop environment in terms of end-to-end throughput and required frame retransmissions. We cross-validate these results with a network simulator with modules modified to reflect the mean and variance of delays measured in components of the real software-defined radio system.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"279 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132728342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
