Spectrum sensing is one of the key issues to develop cognitive radio networks. Radio propagation is one of the main differences between maritime and land environment. Traditional detectors such as matched filter, energy detector and cyclostationary detector are not robust under low signal-to-noise ratio and at high sea state conditions. To deal with maritime environmental challenges, an entropy-based spectrum sensing scheme with the optimal number of samples is presented in this paper. Since spectrum sensing is sensitive to the number of samples, the optimal number of samples has been introduced in the proposed scheme to get minimum sensing time and maximum detection probability. Results reveal that existing scheme works well for the lower sea states but failed to perform at higher sea states. Moreover, simulation results show that the entropy-based scheme is robust at higher sea states in comparison with the traditional energy detector.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128081586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the whitespace network solutions proposed so far realize coordination and rendezvous over licensed or unlicensed spectrum. In this paper we propose a protocol for networks that rely solely on whitespace spectrum. The proposed protocol allows both communication to the broader network (via the access point) and direct device-to-device links over whitespaces. To showcase the capabilities of the proposed solution we have implemented a proof-of-concept software defined radio experiment. Using the experimental platform we have evaluated the overheads of whitespace operation, which come in the form of an extra delay in association and a throughput loss of around 15% of that achievable with licensed spectrum. Our goal is to provide the groundwork for future radio systems that will operate in whitespace spectrum.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132409559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manual coverage detection and prediction is an inefficient and costly task. In this paper we show how Radio Environment Maps (REMs) developed as part of the research on cognitive wireless networks can be used as a basis for a powerful coverage estimation and prediction solution for present-day cellular networks. Applying powerful spatial interpolation techniques on the information coming from location-aware devices, REMs provide a realistic and remote representation of the ground-truth. The proposed approach automatically identifies the number, location and shape of the existing coverage holes and therefore constitutes a perfect example of a novel application of the Cognitive Radio concept on next generation cellular networks. Results on urban and rural environments show that the use of REM brings promising gains in coverage hole detection and prediction with respect to the case where only measurements are used.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121400036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case-based reasoning (CBR) has seen attention as a prospective avenue for storing and organizing past information in order to allow the cognitive engine to learn from previous experience. CBR uses past information and observed outcome to form empirical relationships that may be difficult to model using theory. As wireless systems become more complex and more tightly time constrained, scalability becomes an apparent concern to store large amounts of information over multiple dimensions. This paper presents a quickly accessible data structure designed to reduce access time several orders of magnitude as opposed to traditional similarity calculation methods. A framework is presented for case representation, which provides the core of useful information contained within a case. By grouping possible similarity dimension values into distinct partitions called buckets, we develop a data structure with constant (O(1)) access time.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131750053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We, specifically, consider the problem of downlink interference of a Home eNB (HeNB) to nearby macrocell user equipments (MUEs) served by a macrocell base station. We propose a distributed, self-learning channel access mechanism that enables the HeNB to adaptively change its access to channels shared with neighboring MUEs. Basically, the HeNB accesses the channel with a probability that is updated based on the overheard uplink feedback information from neighboring MUEs. We formulate an optimization problem with the goal of maximizing the achieved rate for the HeNB under the constraint of maintaining a quality of service (QoS) requirement for neighboring MUEs.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124796960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different from other auction mechanisms, our solution includes the channel characteristic and user requirements in the biding, and therefore has more freedom to reflect the preference of secondary users on the channel selection. Four bidding formats are introduced, each of which has different emphasis to maximize social welfare of the spectrum resource. The details of each bidding format are explained, followed by the optimal solution or approximation solution proposed for each format. The approximation ratio of proposed algorithms is analyzed. Finally a numerical test is conducted in terms of social welfare and spectrum utilization. The test shows that actual approximation ratio is close to the optimal one.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"271 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123365059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each user is associated with a transmitter through association zones that maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) to that user. We define an expected spatial capacity metric that captures the expected rate summed over all of these zones. Network performance is measured using an expectation of the spatial capacity, subject to the assumed user density function. We examine the sensitivity of this performance metric to the number of stations and the number of orthogonal (frequency or time) channels, and present some counter-intuitive properties of this metric through illustrative examples, simulation, and optimization.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129533359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a multi-transceiver cognitive radio network, transceivers of a cognitive user will work in a parallel mode, by which the throughput of the network can be increased. Each cognitive user working in such mode should keep electromagnetic compatible (EMC) which will increase the time-complexity of spectrum decision dramatically. In order to solve this problem, an approximate decision model with lower time complexity is given. To evaluate the reliability of the approximate model, a method for EMC probability analysis is presented, which covers co-channel/adjacent channel interference, harmonic interference and intermodulation interference. With a network scene under development, both a theoretic EMC probability and a simulated estimation value are obtained and the good consistency between both results shows that the method is practicable in engineering.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129650732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particular emphasis is given to the constraint on the aggregate secondary interference on TV reception, which is regarded as the premise of the link throughput analysis that followed. Numerical evaluation is performed over different scenarios where the TV receive signal strength, number of unoccupied TV channels, user density are varied. Our results show that the primary interference constraint has only significant impact on the secondary system performance in rural scenario with low TV receive signal strength. In other cases, where higher transmit power does not guarantee better performance, the capacity of the system is limited by the secondary self-interference or collisions rather than the interference constraint. Therefore, efficient TV White Space utilization can be achieved by properly setting the secondary transmit power adaptive to different environments.","PeriodicalId":425536,"journal":{"name":"8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129956466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
