It is in this premise that efforts are being undertaken to improve the health system of every country. The focus of the study was on the different components of the Local Health Care System and the quality of health services of selected Rural Health Units and District Hospitals in the Philippines. The study revealed that the Administrative Capability along leadership and good governance is “moderate”. Along the capability of health personnel in terms of ratio to total population, only two municipalities have the ideal number of doctors and nurses while only five municipalities have an ideal number of midwives. There is also a shortage of human resources for health, particularly doctors, in almost all the district hospitals. However, the limited number of nurses and midwives is compensated by the presence of contractual and volunteer nurses and midwives. In general, the clients expressed their satisfaction on the services provided. Suggestions were made largely on availability of free medicines, laboratory services, reduction of waiting time and improvement of facilities. Although direct causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in Afghanistan include hemorrhage, obstructed labor, infection, high blood pressure, and unsafe abortion, the high burden of diseases responsible for maternal mortality arises in large part due to social determinants of health. The focus of this literature review is to examine the impact of various social determinants of health on maternal health in Afghanistan, filling an important gap in the existing literature.

Methods: This narrative review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework of (1) defining the question, (2) searching the literature, (3) assessing the studies, (4) synthesizing selected evidence in context, and (5) summarizing potential programmatic implication of the context. We searched Medline, CABI global health database, and Google Scholar for relevant publications.

Results: A total of 38 articles/reports were included in this review. We found that social determinants such as maternal education, sociocultural practices, and social infrastructure have a significant impact on maternal health. Health care may be the immediate determinant, but it is influenced by other determinants that must be addressed in order to alleviate the burden on health care, as well as to achieve long-term reduction in maternal mortality.

Conclusion: Because of the importance of social factors for maternal health outcomes, committed involvement of multiple government sectors (i.e. education, labor and social affairs, information and culture, transport and rural development among others, alongside health care) is the long-term solution to the maternal health problems in Afghanistan. It focused on the following: (1) the profile of the respondents in terms of age, marital status, educational level, and employment status, (2) the extent of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding HIV/AIDS among men having sex with men, (3) the common sexual practices used by men having sex with men in regards to HIV/AIDS; and (4) the significant difference of the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and sexual practices of men having sex with men regarding HIV/AIDS when grouped according profile. In answering these problems, the researchers used the descriptive research design. The analysis yielded the following results: (1) Most of the respondents belong to adolescent years, mostly single, obtained higher education, and unemployed. (2) The respondents had sufficient knowledge on the mode of transmission but had insufficient knowledge about the disease process. The respondents show a positive attitude to those people living with HIV/AIDS by not discriminating them. The respondents show a positive beliefs regarding HIV/AIDS by believing that multiple sex partner is one of the risk factors for developing HIV/AIDS and kissing is not a factor for transmission of the virus. However, they have a misconception that if they have a strong faith in God, they will not be infected by the virus. (3) The respondents had good sexual practices with regards to HIV/AIDS as they used condoms to protect themselves against the virus and never engage with multiple sex partners. (4) There is no significant difference on the respondents' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs when grouped according to age, marital status, educational level, and, employment status. There is a significant difference in the respondents' practices when grouped according to age but significantly do not differ when grouped according to marital status, educational level, and employment status. Learning human anatomy is an integral component of physical therapy education and professional practice. The physical therapy curriculum in the Philippines requires dissection of the human cadaver as the primary mode of instruction during laboratory sessions. With the advancement of technology, human anatomical models, and video presentations are now readily available for the students to use. However, consensus regarding the best learning approach to anatomy remains obscure, and the prerogative of availing all these resources in anatomy will impact on the school as well as on the students. This study aimed to compare the learning approaches in gross anatomy among physical therapy students. It utilized a comparative experimental method among 40 third year physical therapy students. Four (4) sets of 50 points labeling items administered immediately after every session serve as their post-tests. It is concluded that physical therapy students can learn knowledge in gross anatomy regardless of learning approach employed. Using textbook approach for independent study is comparable to the use of alternative learning approaches such as using cadaver dissection, video presentation, and anatomical model when students learn gross anatomy. Gaining knowledge in gross anatomy will be enhanced when textbook approach is combined with either video presentation or anatomical model approach. However, the use of human cadaver dissection does not compliment with textbook approach to enhance learning gross anatomy.
