A qualitative phenomenological research design was adopted. Interviews were conducted with 13 doctoral students and 18 faculty members at two internationally recognized and high ranking public research universities with well-established advisor-advisee processes and strong organizational cultures. Results demonstrate the expectations of both parties from each other and themselves throughout the process as well as the effects of the advisor-advisee relationship on the efficiency of the process, advisees’ future academic careers, and identities. Advisees generally highlighted their communication and work plan with advisors while the advisors stressed how different dimensions of the supervising process affect the understanding of scientist identity. The main difference between the universities was the communication style with advisors. Additionally, it was inferred that students feel closer to being a scientist/researcher when they feel the support of their advisor and have a close relationship with their advisor, and the discourses of advisors extend this argument to feeling the support of all faculty members as a team. These results can help policymakers, and researchers to deepen their understanding of the advising process.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136085024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study particularly seeks to gain insight into the attendance reasons reported by freshmen students for a mass course offered in a higher education context. The participants of the study consisted of 158 freshmen students studying at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in İstanbul, Türkiye. The research design collected qualitative data through semi-structured interviews and quantitative data through statistical data that describes the students’ attendance rates. The analysis of the data showed that the students were primarily motivated by the lecturer’s style. According to the students, their lecturer’s way of teaching, attitude towards the students and providing room for self-expression play major role for their motivation to attend the lectures. The secondary motivation for freshmen was found as the syllabus with an interesting content, suggested readings and bonus points. Additionally, some of the students stated that they attended the lectures only because the attendance is compulsory. Regarding the change of motivational drives based on the attendance rates, the data revealed that compulsory attendance do not have an impact on the attendance of students with very high attendance rates. In the paper, the results are discussed based on the relevant literature and the implications for increasing motivation in higher education contexts are provided.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135144838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Muslims have created education as a charitable institution that wherever they are located, all geographies are included in this. Because they have accepted education as one of their social duties and basic responsibilities so that knowledge can be transferred from generation to generation. Undoubtedly, this approach resulted in education being free. In this respect, it has been at the basis of free education, which is based on both religious reasons and practices. Thus, free education of good quality has been maintained since the first practices [from the first Muslim educational institutions], which is related to the first period, which continues until the Seljuks and Ottomans. In this study, it will be shown that the Muslims’ tradition of free education is based on the orders of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s life. It is also shown how this foundation was shaped in the first Muslim states. In the justification of the study, the information contained in the books of siyer and hadith corpus was used. It was also benefited from the information in the sources included in the secondary value. The following result was obtained from the research that the free education among the Muslims is associated with the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet. It stems from the practices of the Prophet. This situation showed itself in the Seljuks and Ottomans, so it found an application area in the Muslim states that emerged in the next period.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44902457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First of all, ethics began to appear in moral debates before emerging as an important theoretical notion. Today, as well as social life, ethical discussions have increased remarkably in professional fields, especially in academia and academic studies. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the ethical problematic, which also has an important place academically, and the studies in the field of political science, by subjecting it to bibliometric analysis. The data were analyzed using the “bibliometrix” package in the R-Studio programming language in the R program, which is an open source statistical program. Based on the analyses carried out; The first three authors with the highest h-index for ethics research in the Web of Science database are Allen N. (5), Hutchings K. (5) and Appiah K. A. (12); The first three countries producing the most articles are the USA, the United Kingdom and Australia, while the countries most open to cooperation are Norway, Switzerland, France and China. It has been determined that the top 3 journals in which the articles on this subject are published the most are “Ethics & International Affairs”, “Ethics & Global Politics” and “Political Theory”. The most-frequently-used keywords are ethics (238), politics (102), war (47), justice (48), politics (45), law (41), democracy (33), power (33), state (29).","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49610321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The convergent parallel design, one of the mixed method designs, was used in the study. In March-April 2021, when the data were collected, 788 students who continued their formal child development undergraduate education through distance education due to the pandemic were included in the quantitative dimension and 11 students were included in the qualitative dimension of the study. Due to the measures taken during the pandemic, quantitative data were collected through online form and qualitative data were collected through online interviews. It was determined that the students benefited from distance education the most in terms of theoretical knowledge and the least in terms of professional practice skills, that the students’ general satisfaction level with distance education was 4.55±2.75 on a numerical rating scale during the pandemic and that the vast majority of the students demanded that all courses be face-to-face, while 5.1% demanded that all courses be through distance education after the pandemic. The reported distance education experiences are part of the temporary adaptation process in an extraordinary situation such as a pandemic. After the pandemic, efforts should be continued to make distance education more qualified by determining the needs for applied fields with such studies.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45150468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
