Despite its popularity all over China, there have been news reports on conflicts caused by\u0000 it, such as noise pollution or use of a public square. This study collects 150 news articles published between May 2016 and May\u0000 2018 containing the keyword guangchangwu from the People’s Daily, one of the most influential\u0000 official newspapers owned by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. The purpose of the study is to investigate the\u0000 government’s attitudes towards square dancing through an analysis of the official media discourse, using word frequency of\u0000 occurrence and multimodal discourse analysis. Both the word count and the co-deployment of visual and linguistic resources\u0000 indicate that square dancing is perceived as an integral part of promoting the national fitness agenda. While the discourse\u0000 demonstrates awareness of square dancing in the context of an aging society and a shortage of public space, general approval for\u0000 it is still quite evident in the frequent positive descriptions in the text and presentations in the images. The use of the word\u0000 dama ‘big mama’ in the official media discourse reveals gender inequality in contemporary China.

This study shows that televised media play a role in reinforcing the socio-semiotic link\u0000 between ideologies and linguistic practice. TM is traditionally associated with chic, urban television celebrities and young\u0000 cosmopolitan types. However, the results of an online survey measuring language attitudes towards televised TM among young\u0000 mainlanders indicate that the social prestige of TM may be waning for this demographic. TM is now perceived by many millennials on\u0000 the mainland as gentle, pretentious and emasculated. The changing attitude among millennials on the Chinese mainland towards TM\u0000 can be ascribed in part to (1) social and economic changes on the mainland and (2) the way TM is stylized in televised media.

The majority of Mandarin monomorphemic verbs is moot about or implies a state change, whereas English has many\u0000 monomorphemic verbs (e.g. kill) that entail a state change. This study investigates empirically the nuanced\u0000 lexicalization of state-change implicature in Mandarin monomorphemic verbs and its implications for the linguistic typology of\u0000 encoding state change. Two experiments were conducted with adult native Mandarin speakers: a rating task about the acceptability\u0000 of sentences that expressed a failure of fulfilment of a state-change (e.g. Zhangsan sha le ji, ke shi ji mei si\u0000 ‘Zhangsan killed a chicken, but it didn’t die’) and a multiple-choice task that probed the preferred interpretation of\u0000 monomorphemic state-change verbs. The results of both studies reveal a significant effect of verb types and post hoc comparisons\u0000 show a cline of state-change implicature in the target verbs.
