Attention is paid to the movement of streetcars in Madrid and how this movement reflects a defining characteristic of modernity, the search for meaning after the industrial revolution. Mixing urban geography and literary analysis, this article complicates the notion of the city as totalizing ideal of progress and instead stresses the messiness of modern urban experience.","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"179 - 191"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43866165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The publication of the letters that Fort (cid:1) un sent to her friend between 1948 and 1951 (2020) revealed outstanding aspects of this relationship and the deep imprint of Field ’ s spirituality on the writer. This work explores that corpus from a confessional angle. It is based on the contributions of No € el Valis in Sacred Realism (2010) and Mar (cid:1) ı a Zambrano in La confesi (cid:1) on: g (cid:1) enero literario (1943). If Valis has analyzed how the confessional scheme intervenes in the Spanish novels of modernity and what is the scope of a painful self – examination associated with guilt, Zambrano understood the solitude as the great motor that drives one to give an account of oneself through the words that, in search of an interior unity that did not exist before, constitute us as subjects. This essay is located at the crossroads of both proposals to address the mechanisms that, in this correspondence, allow us to discover the act of confessional conscience and its implications for a damaged and fragmented intimacy. It also examines the importance of the receiving instance, always imagined, and the interest of the epistolary space for internal inquiry and identity construction. Likewise, it attends to the intertextual links that the letters reveal from the reading perspective","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"112 - 126"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43380136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Las fecundas relaciones personales y profesionales que lograron establecer quedaron interrumpidas durante la Guerra Civil. A su término, Conde permaneció en la España franquista, desde donde quiso tender un puente de diálogo que la uniera de nuevo con Ernestina de Champourcín, Concha Méndez o María Teresa León, cuyas vidas y cuyas obras habían quedado marcadas para siempre por el exilio. El análisis de las cartas que le enviaron a la poeta de Cartagena entre 1940 y 1980 desde los países en los que hallaron refugio da cuenta de la ayuda mutua que se prestaron, del apoyo anímico que se ofrecieron, del interés por conocer sus respectivas creaciones que experimentaron y de las valoraciones que hicieron de ellas. Desde el destierro, celebraron como propios los éxitos cosechados por Conde en España, donde logró alcanzar el objetivo que, varias décadas antes, las había impelido a todas ellas a emprender un camino profesional que, por razones de género, no resultó precisamente fácil en ninguna de las dos Españas.","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"66 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47787565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De forma progresiva han ido saliendo a la luz la correspondencia que mantuvo con Alfonso Reyes, Jorge Oteiza, Silvia Mistral o la carta enviada a Luisa Sofovich. Sin embargo, hasta ahora no se había hablado abiertamente del breve epistolario que intercambió Mallo con Rafael Zabaleta, es decir, se trata del primer diálogo que se conserva de la artista con otro pintor. Tomando este último como punto de partida, nos proponemos reflexionar sobre cómo fue la red comunicativa que Maruja Mallo mantuvo a lo largo del exilio con sus principales destinatarios, al mismo tiempo que investigamos cuánto queda de la mujer moderna que representó en los años previos a la Guerra Civil. El método de estudio utilizado ha sido atendiendo a los temas de conversación, los más relevantes y que son esenciales para el avance de la historiografía-artística y los estudios del exilio. De esta manera podemos constatar cómo se fue creando una red de contactos para el intercambio cultural y la vía por la que se transmitió información a ambos lados del Océano Atlántico.","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"101 - 111"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46911705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The studies included in this dossier foreground the relations and communities created by exiles to bridge the distances that separated them from various groups of friends and colleagues. The groups comprise, first, their fellow-exiles, who had found a host country in the United States, Latin America, or Europe; second, the ‘ insiles, ’ consisting of their compatriots who remained in Spain during the Francoist regime; and, third, the new friends they made in the host country and from whom they would at a later stage be separated once they had relocated or returned to Spain. The studies compiled in this issue resort to exiled women ’ s private correspondence and show how the letters enable the exiles to create an epistolary space of proximity. This effect of rapprochement, in spite of the physical distance that separated the correspondents, is the most salient feature of the alliances and communities that are studied in this dossier. The scholars who participate in this special issue enter into dialogue with the rapidly growing scholarly interest in Spanish women exiles ’ correspondence via private letters, which was the key medium of communication of the mid twentieth century. Recent years have seen the publication of several new works and projects on the field of women ’ s letters written in the context of Spanish exile (Aznar","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"62 - 65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44391266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I focus on how space and identity are entangled in their letters by zooming in on the correspondents’ construction of a spatial identity through their epistolary dialogue. In their epistolary relationship, Casarès and Camus exchange depictions, feelings, drawings, and postcards of the places in their host country France—such as Paris, Ermenonville in Oise, Camaret-sur-Mer in Bretagne, Cabris in the Provence—, that define them not so much individually but mostly together, as a couple. The correspondents create in their letters places and metaphors that have significance for both of them and that they can share—through memory of the past, imagination at present, or plans for the future—. The analysis gives insight in how Casarès renegotiated her identity via the epistolary dialogue with Camus on the basis of the characteristics of exile and the search for silence, creativity and truth that they shared. The study illustrates the autobiographical character of the correspondence in its dialogical context: the strong bond between the sender and recipient of the letters plays a fundamental role in stimulating and facilitating possibilities for synergetic identity renegotiations.","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"127 - 149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46929082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Las cartas estudiadas pertenecen al “Archivo Personal Concha Lagos” alojado en la Biblioteca Nacional de España. El estudio de estas cartas persigue, por un lado, reflexionar acerca de las similitudes y diferencias de tres formas de diáspora causadas por la guerra civil española: (1) el exilio republicano; (2) la permanencia en el extranjero de españoles que vivían fuera de España de forma temporal antes de la guerra; (3) el exilio voluntario de la generación de los niños de la guerra provocado por las restricciones ideológicas de la dictadura franquista. Por otro lado, esta correspondencia permite el análisis del impacto de la guerra en la trayectoria literaria y en la identidad como mujeres autoras de estas escritoras. Finalmente, este grupo de cartas posibilita profundizar en el puente que las escritoras en el exilio sostienen con Concha Lagos y la función que esta última desempeña como mediadora cultural posibilitando la publicación, difusión y promoción de las escritoras en el exilio en la España franquista. Junto a la correspondencia, esta investigación utilizará otros materiales como memorias o textos literarios de índole autobiográfica que sirvan para reconstruir el puente que las escritoras en el exilio forjaron con la editora Lagos durante los años de la Dictadura.","PeriodicalId":41843,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE QUARTERLY","volume":"70 1","pages":"87 - 100"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46143772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
