Their presence will alter soil spectral features and mask the nature of the underlying soil surface horizon. The upper-most, thin, granular layer determines a soil sample's spectra. This study's objective was to characterize the optical depth of some sandy soils and their relationship to spectral reflectance from 0.35-2.50mm. The reflectance-optical depth relationships were determined for four, air-dried, granular, sieved samples, with particle sizes of 1.0-2.0, 0.5-1.0, 0.25-0.5, 0.125-0.25, 0.075-0.125, or <0.075mm. Each particle size separate has convergent reflectance spectra associated with an optical depth that ranged from 0.2 to 8.1mm. The optical depth was greater for larger sized particles than for smaller sized particles. Normalizing the sample depth by the mean particle diameter of each sieve fraction found the optical depth-spectral feature relationships were determined by a layer of granular materials that was 5-8 particles thick. Three non-sieved, well-graded composite soils were also evaluated and their optical depths ranged from 1.4 to 3.9mm. These non-sieved composite soils include a medium fused-silica sand, a medium calcareous sand, and a medium gypsum sand.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"215 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124241613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The device includes a handle and a bifurcated working area having a prying surface designed to engage the overhanging edge of the closure and deflect it sideward to begin its removal. In one embodiment the bifurcated working area includes a pair of arms which are spaced a distance greater than the bottle neck diameter and less than the diameter of the wire retaining ring around the neck of a champagne bottle. In another embodiment a single angular arm forms with the handle a recess for receiving the bottle neck. In still another embodiment the arms are bent to conform with the upper surface of the ring of the bottle. In normal use, the sideward movement of the cork is sufficient to cause its dislodgement from its sealed position and it may be easily removed manually or it may pop off in a controlled and predictable manner.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117057929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method applies colour segmentation on the reference image. The use of segmentation makes the algorithm capable of handling large untextured regions, estimating precise depth boundaries and propagating disparity information to occluded regions, which are challenging tasks for conventional stereo methods. We model disparity inside a segment by a planar equation. Initial disparity segments are clustered to form a set of disparity layers, which are planar surfaces that are likely to occur in the scene. Assignments of segments to disparity layers are then derived by minimization of a global cost function via a robust optimization technique that employs graph cuts. The cost function is defined on the pixel level, as well as on the segment level. While the pixel level measures the data similarity based on the current disparity map and detects occlusions symmetrically in both views, the segment level propagates the segmentation information and incorporates a smoothness term. New planar models are then generated based on the disparity layers' spatial extents. Results obtained for benchmark and self-recorded image pairs indicate that the proposed method is able to compete with the best-performing state-of-the-art algorithms.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132136552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Placement of a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) line is a relatively simple, routine procedure in which a catheter is inserted into the veins of the lower arm and threaded up the arm to the vena cava to sit just above the heart. However, the procedure requires x-ray verification of the catheter position and is usually done under continuous fluoroscopic guidance. The computer program is designed to replace fluoroscopic guidance in this procedure and make PICC line placement a bedside procedure. This would greatly reduce the time and resources dedicated to this procedure. The physician first goes through a quick registration procedure to register the patient space with the computer screen coordinates. Once registration is completed, the program provides a continuous, real-time display of the position of the catheter tip overlaid on an x-ray image of the patient on an adjacent computer screen. Both the position and orientation of the catheter tip is shown. The display is very similar to that shown when using fluoroscopy.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134053289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To obtain an automated and content-based categorization, the following features are extracted from the image data: Fourier coefficients of normalized projections are computed to supply a scale- and translation-invariant description. Furthermore, histogram information and Co-occurrence matrices are calculated to supply information about the gray value distribution and textural information. But the key part of the feature extraction is the shape information of the objects represented by an Active Shape Model. The Active Shape Model supports various form variations given by a representative training set; we use one particular Active Shape Model for each image class. These different Active Shape Models are matched on preprocessed image data with a simulated annealing optimization. The different extracted features were chosen with regard to the different characteristics of the image content. They give a comprehensive description of image content using only few different features. Using this combination of different features for categorization results in a robust classification of image data, which is a basic step towards medical archives that allow retrieval results for queries of diagnostic relevance.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129499435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A three- dimensional seeded region growing is performed on images without any preprocessing operation to obtain the segmented bronchus area. We first apply genetic algorithm (GA) to retrieve the seed point and it is based on the geometric features (shape, location and size) of the airway tree. By the feature of the size of the lung and airway tree, an optimal threshold value is obtained. The final extracted bronchus area with the optimal threshold value is reconstructed and visualized by 3D texture mapping method.","PeriodicalId":417187,"journal":{"name":"Storage and Retrieval for Image and Video Databases","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122969507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
