To achieve this goal, a review of the dictionaries of interest was carried out, their data were compared and analyzed, and a new terminology was proposed, corresponding to the most recent classification of taxa. According to the system we developed, the names of the genera of birds of the Sandgrouse family are reduced to two lexemes - саҗа (saja) and болдырык (boldyryk). To designate certain types, names were specified with words denoting a relevant feature of a particular type. In addition, the article discusses the etiology of terms, their distribution and meanings in various languages. Erroneous etymologies are also indicated. The research results might be useful in compiling new dictionaries of the Tatar language, as well as biology coursebooks in the Tatar language.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115827942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integral approach proves to be an adequate tool to solve the research problem. Integral definitions of the local text, local encyclopedic discourse and text present them as integral distributed objects: fragments of knowledge of some specific locus given in a brief and compressed form, fragments of national and local cultures, fragments of local social space and fragments of national language, the units of which are interdependent and interrelated and are actualized in the process of communication. Discourse is treated as a process, while the text - as a product and result of communication. An overview of research into past and present of Chelyabinsk local encyclopedic text is given. Terminological competence means knowledge of terms of the subject area and ability to apply them in professional activity according to the set tasks. A frame analysis of terms is proposed as one of the methods that contribute to faster and better formation of terminology competence. Frame analysis includes the compilation of a frame and a detailed description of its slots. There is an example of a frame analysis of the concept of «control» in German in foreign language teaching discourse. As a result of the analysis of this discourse, a two-level frame was compiled, whose slots of the first order are «management», «diagnostics», «examination», «teaching». Second-order slots include «teacher» and «student» slots that relate to the first-level slot «management». It is concluded that slots of the frame set projection to functions of control in foreign language teaching discourse. Frame analysis is seen as a method to reveal the semantic potential of terms and to better understand their correlation in the term system.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124968585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two approaches were applied in this multi-vector study: cognitive-discursive and pragma-communicative. The book aimed to identify the main regularities in paremiae functional range. The authors were the pioneers to argue for the need to study the popular science business discourse as a separate sub-discourse of business discourse and to prove its framing status. They also offer a new view on the status of paremia as a precedent cultural sign as a recurrent fragment of the English-language popular scientific business discourse. Another novelty was a complex of specific cognitive-discursive features of paremiae functioning in the English-language popular scientific business discourse. The authors managed to reveal paremiae main functions within the framework of their discursive usage. They also proposed the main methods of paremiological modification. Paremia was used as the main functioning element in the stratification of complex article headings in popular science business discourse. A comprehensive approach including structural principle enabled the authors to divide the paremia repertoir into two sizable groups – original paremiae and modified paremiae – and to determine the percentage for each of the two. The authors brought forward three functional types of headings with paremic elements and identified five new functions characteristic for English paremiae in the examined type of discourse: mimicry, deregulation, remodeling, catalyzing and anticipation. A number of challenging issue were addressed in the book including, first of all, paremia functions discursive convergence, their “functional synergy” which is a very significant phenomenon and an effecient tool to manage information abundace and functional density of all units of the studied discourse. The reasons for the frequent use of paremiae by communicants in various professional contexts were also discussed.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130159016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the available data on languages, 15 categories are analyzed: cardinal, ordinal, multiples, dividing, distributive, restrictive, collective, numerals for counting days, numerals for counting animals, numerals for counting households, numerals for counting fingers, numerals for counting pairs of objects, numerals for counting places and directions, numerals for counting various objects, numerals for counting the years of an animal. It turns out that certain forms are ancient, but most of them were formed later and were characteristic only for a certain group, subgroup or one language. Word-building patterns of numerals are connected with form-changing patterns, although in a number of cases syntactic functions of derivatives change, and sometimes we can observe forms with complex morphological structure, derived not only from cardinal numerals but also from numerals of other categories.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130230618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

P. Chekhov, to (ii) determine the significance of combinations of common names with proper names in revealing the author's position and creating a humorous effect, and also to (iii) identify frequent word-building patterns for the anthroponyms. Literature analysis on theoretical issues of artificial and natural names as well as studying practical examples from onomastics and anthroponymy realms enabled to specify the functions of combinations of common nouns with proper names. These names are part of the plot, conveying ideological messages, concentrating meaning, structure and content. Combinations of proper names and common nouns characterize the style of the writer. In the stories analyzed, common names contain a direct indication of status, position, rank, while proper names metaphorically portray the character or highlight the dominant of his/her personality and convey the author's message concerning evaluation of the image. Linguistic analysis of word-building patterns has shown that most surnames of the characters in the stories of A. P. Chekhov are formed by suffixation from common names, and they are the result of the author's word-making, another way to implicitly evaluate characters. In Chekhov's word combinations, proper and common names are interrelated and opposed.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114922423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article presents the analysis of the «power» concept as the key concept embodied in political discourse. Public speeches of two American presidents - Barack Obama and Donald Trump - over the time period from 2004 to 2019 were chosen as the material for this study. The analysis of the speeches from the viewpoints of lexical-semantic variants of the word power, its typical colligational (morpho-syntactic) and collocational (lexico-phraseological) peculiarities against the background of communicative strategies and tactics employed enabled to identify and describe the characteristic patterns of verbalizing the «power» concept. As a result, it was discovered that Obama’s discourse was characterized by integrative, informational and agonal strategies while Trump employed agonal and integrative strategies in his speeches. In the three meanings of the lexeme - 'authority, possession of control', 'strength, force', 'country, influential people', - invariant and variable morphological, syntactic, lexical, phraseological patterns were found. Among the invariant patterns, there was the use of the vocabulary representing American values and a number of tropes.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"34 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133635368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
