The concept is unique because it is usually placed in the hierarchy of varieties above ‘dialect’ and below ‘language’, also because supradialects are indicated as the ‘dialectal bases’ of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian (BCMS) languages (and their predecessor, Serbo-Croatian). Despite that, the definition of supradialects in CSS literature is paradoxical: they are not fully described varieties, but sets of old isoglosses, reconstructed by dialectologists by comparing remote village speech varieties to *proto-Slavic. This poses the question of how they can act as a “base” of a contemporary standard language. To explore this issue, I analyse the CSS dialectological literature of the past two centuries and inspect the metalanguage used to define and construct supradialects. I also illustrate how the use of the “base” metaphor in authoritative publications on BCMS languages creates an understanding of supradialects as homogenous, contemporary varieties, concealing their (re)constructed nature. These fictionalized versions of the Soviet past aim at overturning the idea of a unitary historical narrative, instead offering multiple ways of looking at the past, often from a female perspective that highlights the role of women in taking on responsibility for the maintaining of history and culture. Moreover, the novels represent an alternative cultural consciousness as a microhistorical fictional space, loaded with cultural and literary-historical meanings. Zelënyj šatër focuses on the literary geography of Moscow as an alternative to the everyday Brežnev-era reality; the alternative city is the locus for the transmission of an earlier cultural heritage in Moscow dissident communities. Vremja ženščin represents the transmission of an Orthodox worldview in post-war Leningrad in a female community and reflects on the cultural mythology associated with St. Petersburg/Leningrad. Zulejcha otkryvaet glaza focuses on a multicultural Soviet labor settlement in the Siberian forest, which echoes both old Tatar myths and the Central-European cultural heritage of the White Leningrad intelligentsia. The public name of a person was not always their baptismal forename. Also, recent research has shown that the full sets of personal names of some of the Russian tsars and their relatives are still unknown to us, not to mention the names of the ruling elite of the state. These unknown names, however, were extremely important to their bearers – these were the names used in confessions, weddings, and funeral services; patronal icon would be commissioned and churches built in honor of the name of one’s saint and namesake. The baptismal forename, essentially a mystery to us, was actually perceived as the main and true name of an individual. In this paper we investigate the names of one of the most well-known people of the second half of the 16th century – Andrej Ščelkalov, a man of rather humble birth but of great power, a long-lived administrator called “the chancellor,” “the minister” or even “the tsar” by his contemporaries. Nesset","doi":"10.1080/00806765.2022.2053577","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/00806765.2022.2053577","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT This article presents a corpus study of Norwegian compounds with deverbal heads (e.g., papirproduksjon ‘paper production’ from produsere ‘produce’) and corresponding constructions in Russian, such as the genitive (proizvodstvo bumagi ‘paper production’), the adjective (bumažnoe proizvodstvo ‘paper production’), the preposition (priglašenie na užin ‘dinner invitation’), and compound constructions (zemlevladelec ‘landowner’). Test of the “Non-Head Function Hypothesis” (Mezhevich 2002) indicates that the genitive construction is the most frequent equivalent of Norwegian compounds where the non-head functions as an internal argument (object). However, the adjective and compound constructions represent important competitors, while the preposition construction is more marginal. The genitive construction is shown to be particularly frequent for non-agentive nouns. A number of generalizations about the use of compounds are proposed, and it is argued that the adjective construction involves “typification,” which is an example of the general cognitive process “construal” (Langacker 2008). Finally, an “Extended Non-Head Function Hypothesis” is proposed, according to which the choice of a Russian construction depends on the closeness of the relation between head and non-head of the Norwegian compound. The closer the relation, the more likely is the use of the genitive. The idiomatic level of the Russian language, with its fixed connotations, provides Pasternak with material for sophisticated metaphors, and simultaneously for transmitting conventional and easily recognizable meanings. Thus, the focus on idioms offers an opportunity to explain clearly how a balance of simplicity and complexity is achieved in a work that stems from the poet’s transitional period. In the first section of the article, we discuss the main types of Pasternak’s treatment of idioms; in the second, we provide a number of illustrative examples, analyzing the intertwining of various phraseological modifications in the context of stanzas. In our reading, we pay close attention to the relationship between semantic and visual features of Pasternak’s verses, and in the third section, we discuss the topic of visuality in Pasternak’s poetry from a theoretical point of view.
