For the current power systems, PMUs not only offer the synchronized measurements of real-time data of voltage but also the current and frequency. Placement of PMUs in each bus for monitoring the system is not feasible from economic point of view and also for big data handling. So it is an obligatory matter to reduce the number of PMUs in the bus system with the aim of attaining the maximum power system observation. Different techniques are being applied from past to present to solve this optimum PMU placement (OPP) problem such as heuristic method, mathematical programing. Heuristic method is a quick experience-based technique for solving the optimization problems. Various optimization methods for solving the OPP problems are being reviewed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116376166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is becoming challenging for the poor or low-income people to pay for their health purpose. Thus they suffered from various diseases and as a result the death rate is increasing day by day. On the other hand, there are many people who have plenty of leftover medicines even after finishing those medicines consumption. In this paper, we have proposed a medicine distribution web portal, named ‘GiveMed’. The GiveMed is a platform for the donors who want to donate their unused medicines to the poor or low-income people who need those medicines. This system will contribute to reduce the cost for national health services by making the proper use of unused medicines; and to help the poor or low-income people to get better health services. The portal was also evaluated with 16 participants (including doctors, donor, NGO personnel and low-income people) and found that the portal is highly effective, efficient, satisfiable and useful system.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123488587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that the proposed design supports dual band configuration. For the two resonance frequencies, the antenna also supports two different types of radiation pattern. As no etched slot, shorting pins or air gap have been used to increase gain or directivity factor, this design is compact in shape and size as well as simple and easy to manufacture. The proposed antenna design will create new opportunities in the designing and manufacturing of small scaled radiators with enhanced performance, which is of demand for many applications.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127023360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper illustrates a microcontroller based water quality monitoring system with high degree of accuracy and susceptible to determine several parameters of water such as temperature, turbidity and potential of hydrogen (pH). Detection of those parameters of water is very important and indispensable in order to lead healthy life as different source of water are being tainted due to excess population. Various analytical schemes are subsist for ascertainment of the quality of water where several are time-consuming and few are used for industrial applications that are not applicable for simple water quality monitoring system. Consequently, it is needless to model a simple device that track out various parameters of water unerringly. In this project based research work, a simple microcontroller is used as central processing unit (CPU) and multiple sensors that detect various parameters and send the data to microcontroller and finally the LCD gives the results.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126904193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The expansion rate of cervical cancer is at alarming rate internationally, including both developed (e.g. New Zealand) and developing (e.g. Bangladesh) countries. This study considers survey data collected from Chittagong Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh and other secondary data from open sources. Studies have uncovered that younger women aged from 25 to 34 tend not to react to cervical screening program. Without regular cervical cancer screening, the early changes that could progress to cervical cancer suffering would not be picked up. This study aims to address these concerns by proposing a cervical screening intervention program to encourage women of all age group to participate in the screening program. The intervention could contribute to the health sector by decreasing the cervical cancer mortality rate and associated cost. The preliminary investigation shows that about 96% screening take-up following such intervention program suggesting that a proper intrinsic motivated cervical cancer intervention program is required.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130271793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People having eyesight problem can't read books, papers or any kind of printed reading materials. This problem can be solved simply by taking image of the reading materials, extracting words from the image and converting those words to sound, so by hearing that text converted sound they can understand what is written on that paper. A device is implemented for Bengali speaking visually handicapped people. For character recognition tesseract-ocr is used as optical character recognition(OCR) engine. Python gTTS module, a text to speech engine is used to convert the words extracted by tesseract-ocr to sound. Whole process is implemented on Raspberry Pi based a compact hardware design. Accuracy of character detection from the captured image and words to sound conversion is as high as 85 %. It is to be mentioned that accuracy is calculated as percentage of correct words to total words in an image.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131428217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Other alternatives include Electroencephalography (EEG) based and Electrooculography (EOG) based automatic wheelchairs which use electrodes to measure neuronal activity in the brain and eye respectively. These are expensive and uncomfortable, and are almost impossible to procure for someone from a backward economy. We present a wheelchair system that can be completely controlled with eye movements and blinks that uses deep convolutional neural networks for classification. We have developed a working prototype based on only a small video camera and a microprocessor that shows upwards of 99% accuracy. We also demonstrate the significant improvement in performance over traditional image processing algorithms for the same. This will allow such patients to be more independent in their day to day lives and significantly improve quality of life at an affordable cost.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123170321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of them occur as a result of ignoring traffic signals and signs. The conventional system for traffic signs and signal, shown through the road sided sign post or traffic signal post, may pass unnoticed due to bad weather conditions or driver's ignorance or other distractions. This study proposes a system that combines a smart traffic signaling technique and a smart automobile to avoid the road accident. The smart automobile consists of a micro-controller, sonar sensor and a RF receiver with a display embedded in a car whereas the smart traffic signaling system consists of a microcontroller based RF signaling transmitter that placed in every traffic signal or sign post. The sonar on the smart automobile will help to avoid clash by measuring the distance of surrounding vehicles. Therefore, the proposed system ensures that no vital traffic sign will go unnoticed, whatever the condition is. It can be utilized in special areas with sudden sharp & high curve, heavy traffic zones.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122227427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
