Employing a qualitative methodological approach, this paper aims to explore factors hindering the acceptability of the LSS initiative in organizations and list factors required for successful application and implementation in a developing economy from the perspective of LSS consultants. Using Nigeria as a case study, primary data were collected though a number of semi-structured interviews with representatives of leading continuous improvement consultancy firms in Nigeria. Finding draws out links between major factors such as drivers and motivation, LSS performance, marketability and challenges to the acceptability and applicability of LSS in Nigeria. Further findings highlight major factors such as lack of management buy-in, level of awareness, certification driven market, Nigerian environment and culture, etc as problems that hinder successful implementation of LSS in Nigeria. This paper contributes to the theoretical foundation of critical success factors required for the implementation of Lean Six Sigma, with results from the experience of a developing economy.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115512587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Statistical process control (SPC) tools are being used in many different areas other than manufacturing industries, since they are recommended whenever there is a need for continuous monitoring and improvement. This article designs X̅ & R charts for monitoring diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of a patient for effective management of hypertension. The X̅ & R charts are designed based on patient-generated data at home. Self-monitoring of blood pressure (BP) by patients at home is increasingly being used and appears to be the most appropriate method for the long-term follow-up of treated hypertension. The concept has been discussed and illustrated through a case study. In general, the use of control chart may provide an effective tool for the physician to understand the progress of his patient with a kind of medication, and to modify the treatment plan, if necessary.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114284953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of prioritizing of the wind turbine site is being emphasized to maximize the productivity, and is a primary and important stage for decision makers in many countries. This research aims to prioritize five cities of Iranshahr, Chabahar, Zabol, Zahedan, and Saravan in Sistan-Baluchistan province located in southeastern part of Iran for wind turbine installation. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology was used for this purpose. Five important criteria of wind potential, topography of the region, distance to the power distribution network, land cost, and intensity of natural hazards were considered for this analysis. Also, Anderson-Petersen model was used for ranking efficient Decision Making Units (DMUs). Finally, Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method was used to validate the results of DEA model. Comparison of the results of DEA and SAW illustrated an excellent fit which indicates high validity of the DEA results. The results showed that the city of Zabol was the best option for wind turbine installation in the province.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114315039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work is concerned with sustainable project selection, which must guarantee a long-term balance between the integrity of the environment, the social equality and the economic efficiency and must evaluate projects in the short, medium and long term horizons. This paper first provides a state-of-the-art survey on sustainable project selection. The review confirms the topic relevance since the multi-period aspect is missing in previous publications. Secondly, it proposes a novel multi-criteria multi-period approach based on TOPSIS, for selecting projects under sustainable development context. The proposed approach is then applied for choosing the best compromised sustainable forest management options, considering simultaneously the economic benefits, the environmental impacts and the decision-maker preferences.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127120782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demand for leather footwear is highly fluctuating leading to bullwhip effect and its price elasticity adds to further complications. Lean management practices are applicable to all sectors. However, suitable models need to be developed for different sectors. The purpose of this paper is to identify the set of lean practices adoptable in footwear sector and to investigate the synergistic effects of lean management practices on supply chain operational performance of footwear sector. Lean concept is not only applicable to production but can also be extended to supply chain to improve the supply chain operational performance. The enhancing attributes of Supply Chain Operational Performance (SCOP) specific to footwear industry has been identified and prioritized. A comprehensive set of lean management practices were scrutinized based on its applicability in the footwear sector and a model is designed to maximize supply chain operational performance of the footwear sector.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"95 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123361575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of establishing horizontal relationships between supply chain partners has been first introduced by the European Union in 2001. Often, horizontal co-operation can lead to substantial economic benefits where it is a means of sharing risk, making cost savings, increasing investments, pooling know-how, in addition to the ecological benefit behind. To evaluate possible research directions in this area, this paper provides a review of quantitative models developed in literature for successfully establishing horizontal relationships between competing/non-competing partners. The paper also presents a solution framework for integrating green concepts along with the collaboration problem.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124264862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore empirical regression modelling is frequently used in practice. In this study, a polynomial regression model was developed to correlate the electrode wear with four EDM process parameters (current, pulse on-time, pulse off-time and capacitance) while machining the cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide ceramic. As many factor interactions were found significant, lambda plot was used to find an appropriate response transformation that can simplify the model and improve its interpretability. This was attained when adopting the inverse transformation as only three parameters (current, pulse on-time and pulse off-time) were significant with an adjusted-R2 of 0.939. Due to the possibility of rendering illogical predicted values when detransforming the results of the fitted model, an alternative Generalized Linear Model (GLM) with gamma distribution and a reciprocal link function was developed. Being associated with shorter mean response confidence intervals, the GLM was more reliable for estimating and predicting the response. This paper is the first to report the use of GLM in the context of modelling EDM processes.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"25 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123658250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conceptual paper brings discussion of what sort of measures are required to fit organizations' needs in measuring performance in terms of economic, social, and environment bottom-lines. A literature review has been conducted for BEMs that includes the EFQM Excellence Model, Baldrige Model, ISO standards, GRI, and explores its integration with Corporate Sustainability. Then, an analysis is deployed in order to identify common frameworks and metrics used for assessing sustainability in the three dimensions of bottom-lines. Despite there are better frameworks to assess corporate sustainability, Business Excellence Models (BEMs) were found to be suitable performance measurement frameworks to integrate Corporate Sustainability; however, business criteria remain unclear and ambiguous, not addressing clearly how to measure Corporate Sustainability Performance. The research provides a general approach to explore suitability of BEMs to include corporate sustainability and it is limited in scope as some organizations' have specific maturity levels in both: deploying BEMs and corporate sustainability. Further research include the suitability of current economic systems to reach corporate sustainability, and the use of lean-six sigma methods to support corporate sustainability at strategic and operational levels.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122764621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sustainable production plays an important role in the global markets and companies practicing sustainable manufacturing processes for protecting the environment can increase their competitiveness. Reverse logistics is one of the sustainable approaches, which returns back used product from point of consumption to the point of origin due to recovery and product reuse. The identification of critical success factors for reverse logistics is essential to facilitate reverse logistics organization in implementing it. In this work, critical success factors (CSFs) in reverse logistics were identified based on the critical success factors in supply chain management. A survey was conducted among reverse logistics experts to identify the factors. Then, the factors were ranked by TOPSIS, showed that transportation as the most important factor followed by process planning and resource efficiency. However, innovation was the lowest ranked.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122042941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
