This paper presents tabu search and simulated annealing approaches for scheduling jobs on identical parallel machines. The identical parallel machine scheduling problem has been considered to minimize the mean tardiness for the jobs. Initially, an initial solution has been obtained using EDD dispatching rule then, simulated annealing and tabu search have been applied to reach a near optimal solution. Computational experiments are performed on problems with up to 10 machines and 150 jobs. The computational results indicate that the two proposed approaches are capable of obtaining better solutions for the given scheduling problem. Moreover, the tabu search approach provides better solution then simulated annealing approach.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"339 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133951995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same use case when mapped to information and communication technology gives rise to one of the concept called textual communication, which deals with transmitting text using a communication channel. Every symbol used in the text needs a unit of storage called byte, the metric for transmission and storage resources. Due to the limitations of the transmission channel with respect to bandwidth and storage with respect to size, considerable models, methods and technologies have been proposed and evolved to optimally utilize the said resources without compromising the content and the semantics of the text. This work carried out proposes a novel framework for representing and storing textual data called Ordell Ugo Nano hereinafter termed as OUNano, which can be seamlessly integrated with existing communication and storage infrastructure. The proposed methodology attempts to best optimize the utilization of existing digital storage and communication resources, thus allowing such resources to be exploited to their maximum potential. This facilitates a considerably higher rate of textual data transmission and processing in communication channels, along with significant increase in storage capacities of the existing storage assets in place, without investing in additional resources.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128917094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is estimated that HIE is seen in 1-8 of every 1000 births. Despite advancements in prenatal care, HIE in late preterm and term neonates remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality. This paper deals with the design of a system to treat HIE through whole body cooling of the neonate through a special mattress made of porous silica aero gel. The method of silica aero gel preparation is sol-gel process using organic silicon monomer, such as tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor.72 hours of cooling reduces the infant's illness by cutting down the metabolic rate. The infant's temperature is regulated by a temperature monitoring and a rewarming circuit similar to a radiant warmer. During this course the newborn encounters obstructive respiratory cycles, termed Apnea which causes mental and physiological distress. A simple microphone sensor based Apnea detector and a vibro tactile stimulator thus designed improvised the behavior of the neonate. The silica aero gel mattress provides effective cooling and portability during emergency situations. The mattress offers improved cooling results than conventional water or passive cooling techniques.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129078799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manufacturing industry continues moreover to make manufacturing in production variance more flexible and responsive by looking deeper and more critically into all aspects of its operation. A Product-Service System (PSS) embraces the product and service continuum as one system. Little is known about where the boundaries of PSS should lie as it needs to integrate both external and internal elements in managing inventory control within a turbulent environment in which are major dominant costs include many areas of uncertainty related to the condition, maintenance and replacement of product components. A new improved inventory control system is called for that deals with manufacturers' core operational activities in a more realistic manner. This research is focused on investigating the value and validity of introducing a PSS inventory control system. The research will led to a new approach for dealing with inventory control and contributes not only to understanding of the PSS paradigm in manufacturing industries but will also impact on their sales and profits.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128637099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Holt-Winters (HW) which is one of the most popular forecasting methods is utilized in cases where data show seasonality and/or trend. The method involves the selection of several parameters for optimum prediction results. Heuristics are usually utilized for optimum parameter selection and it appears to be an open field for improvement. In this study “Spreadsheet modeling” of HW method is improved by minimizing the mean squared error (i.e. prediction error). Since the forecast error is nonlinear function; Holt-Winters parameter optimization in this study is achieved by “Excel Nonlinear Solver” and “Differential Evolution Search” techniques. To increase the usability of the spreadsheet modeling advance macro programming techniques are incorporated with the developed models in Microsoft Excel.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115895349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case study reported in this paper is the outcome of the business internship program sponsored by the Department of Economics, Management and Industrial Engineering of University of Aveiro for the students in the Industrial Management and Engineering master program. The system-in-analysis, the packaging line, is one of the most important lines of the company being in charge of packaging visual communications boards (memos) from several upstream assembly lines. The packaging line was clearly unbalanced and the throughput was below the necessary target (to meet market demand). The operation of the line was stabilized, the main problems were identified and a line balancing action was performed with productivity improvements of about 40%. It was also developed a simulation study, for this line, in order to evaluate the utilization of a material handling robot. The outcome of the study was taken into account by the decision-makers and some recommendations are being implemented. This work is a case study highlighting the advantage of using a experiential learning approach on industrial engineering courses and evidencing the benefits that SMEs can get from the use of lean manufacturing tools and simulation to improve their operations.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116410841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this challenge, the proper human resource evaluation and selection is an important step. In this paper we present a fuzzy linguistic approach that utilizes 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic terms and supports the selection of suitable human resources based on their skills and the required skills for each project task. The proposed approach follows a group, multi-criteria, similarity degree-based aggregation algorithm and results in an objective aggregation of the ratings of required task related skills and provided skills from candidate human resources. In addition, we consider skill relationships as 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic terms to reflect the contribution of one skill to the learning of other skills. The proposed approach has been implemented in the context of SPRINT SMEs project. SPRINT SMEs aims to suggest a practical framework of methods for the improvement of software processes which take place in small & medium sized software development enterprises.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116849662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
