This paper proposes the use of the Vanguard Method approach for logistics services design that can reduce reverse logistics caused by forward logistics inefficiencies. A case study of a UK manufacturing company has been undertaken using semi-structured interviews and observations. The results show that the Vanguard Method has a direct impact on reducing reverse logistics by building a self-organizing logistics system that learns from reverse logistics cases analysis and continuous customer demand analysis. The value of this paper is the incorporation of forward logistics systems design with reduced reverse logistics in a manufacturing setting by transferring the customer knowledge across the boundaries of the firm throughout the supply chain to enhance logistics function.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"248 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126047294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If those agents are rational, they may try to subvert the protocol for their own benefit, in an attempt to reach an outcome that provides greater utility. We revisit the traditional notion of self-enforcing protocols implemented using existing game-theoretic solution concepts, we describe its shortcomings in real-world applications, and we propose a new notion of self-enforcing protocols, namely co-utile protocols. The latter represent a solution concept that can be implemented without a coordination mechanism in situations when traditional self-enforcing protocols need a coordination mechanism. Co-utile protocols are preferable in decentralized systems of rational agents because of their efficiency and fairness. We illustrate the application of co-utile protocols to information technology, specifically to preserving the privacy of query profiles of database/search engine users.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"937 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133446960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anthropometric indicators from the Ergonomists, ISO14738:2002 and ISO15534-3:2000 are being used which may not be appropriate. A research has been carried out to compare the anthropometric values obtained from a Mauritian company with the international sources for the design of particular equipment before making recommendations on what data source will be appropriate for SIDS. Based on workspace design principles, the 5th percentile is used for reach and the work surface height. The 50th percentile is used for visibility requirements and the 95th percentile is used for clearance necessity. The 5th and 95th percentiles were calculated from the normal distribution obtained so that the workstation suits at least 90 percent of the users and the 50th percentile was also determined. The percentiles for the reach and eye height for the local population were seen to differ by more than 10 percent while this was less for the stature and elbow height as compared to data obtained from ISO 14738:2002 and ISO 15534-3: 2000. Thus it is strongly recommended that the design and manufacture of equipment for the local companies takes into consideration the anthropometry of the local population.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117130483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surface-type samples were fabricated using copper thin films as electrodes deposited on glass substrates. Impedance and capacitance variations at room temperature were measured as a response of relative humidity ranging from 32%~98% at 1 kHz frequency. Similar parameters were measured at 1 kHz and fixed humidity for variable temperatures of 25~70°C. In addition, depending on the solution used during the deposition process, decrease in impedance and increase in capacitance with an increase in either humidity or temperature is also observed. Change in the properties of the CuPc films, deposited at different gravity conditions from different solutions, can be considered due to the changes in the structure and composition of the films. The results of the investigations potentially can be used for the fabrication of organic electronic devices that can be used in instrumentation and optoelectronics.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125019693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new efficient technique to schedule several kinds of repetitive construction projects with versatile multi-objective optimization. Non-identical repeating units (floors) are commonly found. The line of balance (LOB) technique is well suited for scheduling such repetitive projects. It maintains resource continuity for an activity from one unit to the next one and achieves logic constraints at the same time. However, LOB is faced by several practical challenges when used for high-rise buildings and habitation projects: variability in construction works, diverse directions in activities workflow, skeleton constraint, and presentation difficulties. The line of balance based technique is adapted in order to overcome these challenges and maximize the performance of scheduling multi-storey building projects. The present model enables planners to control time and/or cost optimized plan using Genetic Algorithms. Activities' alternatives are investigated to generate a set of crew formations and interruptions if allowed. Sensitivity to cost attributes for cost optimizations is also handled. Spreadsheets are developed to demonstrate the model's usefulness on an example application, adapted from literature. However, other examples handled in literature are investigated to validate the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115200534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small individual contributions will help abate global warming. The steel industry, if left unattended, has great potential of releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In this paper a life cycle assessment (LCA) for steel balls used as grinding media in mines that are produced at Craster International in Zimbabwe is discussed. Knowing the life cycle environmental impacts of the steel balls is very important since they produce greenhouse gases in their production. The emitted carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxides and other trace greenhouse gases have adverse effects on flora, fauna, water bodies and humans. Interviews, questionnaire and direct observation and measurements were used to generate the data. The data is analyzed and a new LCA diagram from the results of the research and recommendations was made.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116224007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However in practice sometimes the measurements of the quality attribute are not normally distributed, especially when the size of the sample is small. For the economic statistical design of X-bar control charts the assumption of non-normality is important as it has significant effect on the estimation of the chart's parameters (n, h, k). In this paper the effect of non-normality on the solution space for the economic statistical design of X-bar control charts is studied. Considering constant sampling intervals it was observed that the assumption of non-normality reduces the valid range of k. In contrast for variable sampling intervals it was observed that the non-normal assumption has a significant effect on the lower bound for h. By understanding how the solution space is restricted by the non-normality assumption more effective solving algorithms for this problem can be developed.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"331 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122840468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article within the forward-reserve model, in order to ensure service level optimization, a heuristic sequential solution procedure is proposed. A global model is presented and solved for evaluating and decision making of warehouse and inventory decisions. The proposed method is related to service level and inventory decisions as well as warehouse decisions and shortage cost. Two stages are followed with the proposed method. While in the first stage inventory decisions along with the constant service level decision being taken in the second part the results obtained in the first stage being kept constant and with this regard warehouse decisions being taken. Since the main purpose in this article is to develop a new equation for a service level, the results of the second stage are not shown in detail. It has been shown with an application of a real example that we could reach the solution in less time for the new developed service level equation comparing to simple service level search procedure. The main contribution of this study to literature is to develop a new service level equation for forward-reserve models.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117104798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To find an optimum or near-to-optimum solution without any size-limitation of the problem, a multi-objective Tabu Search (TS) algorithm is proposed. The validity of the model and performance analyses of CBVCMSs over basic layouts is tested through benchmarking a numerical example. At the end, the efficacy of distributed layout for generating CBVCMS is illustrated because of its flexibility, minimizing the objective function of the developed mathematical model, less traveled distance by components of family groups, and acceptable capacity utilization. Moreover, the results illustrate the priority of CBVCMS in comparison to the original classical Cellular Manufacturing Systems (CMSs) from the capacity utilization point of view.","PeriodicalId":410110,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128563831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
