Knowledge of fish physiology, the influence of management and environmental conditions is important to ensure success in cultivation. This study aimed to determine values of hematological parameters in tilapia cultured in cages in the region of Paulo Afonso, Bahia, Brazil, evaluating the effect of seasonality. There was a significant difference (p <0.05) in the number of red blood cells, packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin of concentration, the total number of leukocytes, and the relative number of lym - phocytes and neutrophils. The studied haematological parameters showed influence of seasonality. The hematologic values obtained can be used in future comparative studies of fish health in similar crops.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116641988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microphytoplankton biomass and trophic state of the estuarine region of São Francisco river (northeastern Brazil). Braz. J. Aquat. Sci. Technol. 20(2). eISSN 1983-9057. DOI: 10.14210/bjast.v20n2. One of the most serious problems that affects estuaries is the excessive enrichment of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that result in increased productivity. Studies to evaluate the trophic conditions of the São Francisco River estuary were conducted at four stations in the rainy (July/ 2006 ) and dry (January/2007) seasons in neap and spring tides, during high tide and low tide. Microphytoplankton was collected using plankton nets with mesh size of 45μm and the samples for analysis of nutrients and Phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) were obtained from the sub-surface layer with wide-mouthed plastic bottles. The waters of this ecosystem showed salinities ranging from an oligohaline to a limnetic regime, alkaline pH and water clarity ranging between 1.00m and 2.60m. The concentrations of dissolved nutrients varied considerably, being highest during the dry season period. The Microphytoplankton was composed of 176 taxa, mainly distributed among the Chlorophyta, Charophyta and Bacillariophyta. Phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) showed no significant differences between seasons, tides and tidal regimes, however the density (Cel.L-1) was significantly higher in the dry season. Values of a TSI showed oligotrophic conditions in the four stations and in the two periods analyzed. In the dry season there was a higher cell density and increased levels of dissolved nutrients with the exception of nitrate that was considered higher in the rainy season. The Microphytoplankton species are characteristic of waters of low to moderate trophic level and the TSI indicated a predominance of oligotrophic conditions in the two seasons in the study area.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126489264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is growing concern about contamination of water resources by “emerging pollutants”. Endocrine interferons (EI) from pharmaceuticals, such as 17α-ethynyl estradiol and 17β-estradiol, fit this condition. This problem has been studied by researchers because little is known about the ecotoxicological risk of such compounds. There are several methods that aim to perform biomonitoring for the presence of EIs previously mentioned, such as tests involving yeast or genetically modified fish. The disadvantages of these methods lie in the delay of responses when using fish, and because it is not possible to extrapolate the results found to the environment once genetically modified organisms are used. In this scenario, we are looking for bioassays that allow a fast and environmentally sound biomonitoring.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115598392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DOI: 10.14210/bjast.v20n2. Three acidophilic bacteria were isolated from water and sediment samples collected at a coal mining-impacted river, Rio Sangão, located in the city of Criciúma, Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil. These microorganisms were isolated in acid media and were phylogenetic related to the species Acidiphilium cryptum by its 16S rRNA gene sequences, although they differ from this species in the assimilation of some carbon sources. The optimum and the maximum pH for growth of all strains were nearly 3.0 and 5.0-6.0, respectively. Two of the strains were slightly more acidophilic, with the minimum pH for growth of 2.0. All strains also tolerate the four tested metals (Ni, Zn, Cu and Se) at variable concentrations, with LAMA 1486 being the most metal-resistant strain. These bacteria may belong to different ecotypes of A. cryptum, or even represent new species in the genus. Besides they bear characteristics that make them useful in the development of bioremediation process, for the treatment of sites contaminated with multiple toxic metals, including coal mining drainage.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121181581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deep-water coral reefs and coral aggregates were first discovered in locations off the coast of Norway, in 1865. The increase of commercial operations in deep waters, and the use of advanced technology in offshore areas have revealed the true scale of deep-sea coral ecosystems of Europe, until then virtually unknown. From the 1990’s, there was a considerable increase in the number of important scientific contributions on deep-sea coral habitats. So, today is known that the occurrence of coral reefs is not restricted to shallow waters of tropical and subtropical regions and that there are deep-sea coral reefs spread out of the world, including Brazil. The goal of this study was to indicate the existence of potential areas of deep-sea coral reefs/habitats along the Brazilian coast, from records of occurrence of coral reef builders species ( Lophelia pertusa, Madrepora oculata, Solenosmilia variabilis, Dendrophyllia alternata and Enallopsammia rostrata ). The examination of the records/specimens demonstrated an extensive and almost continuous latitudinal distribution of the coral species along the Brazilian coast. Fishing is the main cause of impact to deep-sea coral reefs in several regions of the world. For more than a decade the deep demersal fishing has been held in Brazil and the extent of the impact caused by fishing nets, used by the boats close to the reefs, is unknown. The data presented here provide a contribution not only to the scientific community, but also to the decision makers regarding the uses of areas of the Brazilian shelf and slope, which represent reservoirs of rich marine biodiversity.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133478572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The coast surrounding Coroa Vermelha reef presented a higher degree of urbanization and touristic activities than Taipus de Fora at the time of sampling. The temperature, dissolved inorganic nutrients, total alkalinity, and total suspended solids were significantly higher in Coroa Vermelha reef, probably as a result of the anthropogenic inputs. These variables in Taipus de Fora were comparable to those found in the literature for Recife de Fora, an offshore protected reef and other less impacted reefs.  Total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon and carbon dioxide partial pressure were lower and pH was higher in the reef flat than at the surrounding seawater. There was a prevalence of an influx of atmospheric carbon dioxide to reef water, net autotrophy and calcification. A significant correlation was observed between net calcification and net community metabolism. The benthic photosynthesis in the reef flat during low tide decreases the carbon dioxide partial pressure and increases the aragonite saturation state, establishing thermodynamic conditions that favor calcification.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127941693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
