In Brazil, seaweed aquaculture is more concentrated on the exotic species K. alvarezii, and the rearing areas are restricted to the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, northern São Paulo State, and central Santa Catarina State. The southern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, which comprises two socio-economical and geographically important bays: Ilha Grande and Sepetiba, is densely populated with multiple economic activities using coastal environments, where recently algae farming is considered strategic to its socioeconomic development, an alternative to oil-based economy. This study serves as a tool to identify suitable areas for Kappaphycus farming in this densely urbanized portion of southern Atlantic. We formulated suitability maps, as a marine spatial planning tool to facilitates decision making, for civil society, managers and investors while providing resources for algae farming sustainable development. Thirty-one maps were generated related to the criteria and constraints that influence their productivity. Individual weights were obtained through the judgment of technicians, researchers, and other stakeholders using the pairwise comparison method. The criteria and weights were combined using the multicriteria decision rules and the suitability map was created derived from reclassifications. Of the total area calculated, 12,88% are areas restricted for cultivation and 87,12% were considered suitable areas. The analyses indicated aquaculture potential for the entire region. Sepetiba Bay has more most suitable areas than Ilha Grande bay. However, the presence of heavy metals in Sepetiba Bay should be taken account when the biomass is for human consump even if it can be used for other purposes. The results contribute to the construction of a marine spatial planning, which assists producers, decision makers, and social actors in the sustainable development of seaweed farming.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140488594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aimed to evaluate the spatio-temporal variations of the benthic macrofauna of the Itajaí-Mirim river, in the original and rectified channels. The distribution of organisms was evaluated with samples collected at four points, two located in the natural channel and two in the rectified channel, during the four seasons of 2021. At each sampling point, with a van Veen dredge, three samples were collected for macrofauna and one for granulometric characterization. In total, 715 individuals were identified, and distributed in eight taxa. PERMANOVA revealed that the differences observed in the abundance of organisms considering seasonality were not significant, however, they were significant between the channels. The rectified channel exhibited 67% of the total abundance of the analyzed fauna. In this region, the organic matter and CaCO3 exhibited the highest concentrations and the sediment was classified as silt, while in the natural channel, the granulometry varied between fine sand and silt. The oligochaete Tubificida was the most abundant organism, representing 97% of the fauna. Considered tolerant, this organism inhabits freshwater sediments with low oxygen concentration and high organic carbon load. The low richness of the community and the high dominance of Tubificida characterized the evaluated region as a highly altered environment.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"197 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139173299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An equation to estimate biomass production, as well nitrogen and phosphorus recovery, by Ulva species is further proposed. Results showed that U. fasciata removed 99 % of nitrogen (NH4-NO3) and 22% of phosphate dissolved in water. Tissue nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll-a increased 73, 20 and 244 %, respectively, demonstrating rapid assimilation of nutrients fueling U. fasciata’s growth (5.69 % day-1). The constructed equation correlating fresh weight and area showed that 0.21- and 11.35-tons ha-1 year-1 of phosphorus and nitrogen could be recovered and that 3.47 tons of dry biomass could be produced. Tissue data add to the understanding of physiological effects of nutrient availability in U. fasciata. The efficient removal of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus represents an important ecosystem service with potential for production of value-added by-products.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125163573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uma das atividades realizadas por estes projetos é o resgate e reabilitação de animais, incluindo os cetáceos. Este estudo analisa os casos de reabilitação de cetáceos feitos pelo Projeto de Monitoramento de Praias da Bacia de Santos (PMP-BS) entre os anos de 2016 a 2019. O PMP-BS percorre diariamente cerca de 2100km de costa ao longo do litoral sudeste-sul brasileiro com a finalidade de registrar tetrápodes marinhos e reabilitar os animais vivos quando possível. No período analisado, foram registrados 4531 encalhes de 27 espécies de cetáceos. A grande maioria correspondeu a animais mortos (99%, n=4482) e apenas 1% (n=49) foram encontrados vivos. Para avaliar os padrões de causas de morte optou-se por utilizar apenas necropsias realizadas em carcaças mais frescas (n=863). As causas de morte antropogênicas foram as mais frequentes (n=270; 93%), estando principalmente ligadas ao sistema respiratório, possivelmente causadas por afogamento derivado de interações com artefatos de pesca. Dos animais encontrados vivos, 36 foram levados para bases de reabilitação, mas 32 acabaram vindo a óbito, a realização de uma eutanásia foi necessária e apenas três espécimes tiveram sucesso na reabilitação e foram reintroduzidos na natureza. A espécie mais frequente foi Pontoporia blainvillei, tanto nos exemplares mortos (n=2178) quanto vivos (n=18). Os resultados obtidos por projetos de monitoramento são importantes devido à sua padronização dos esforços e protocolos de atividades, e servem para direcionar pesquisas de campo dedicadas, destacando o valor dos registros precisos e contínuos de encalhes. Mesmo considerando que a quantidade de animais retornados para o ambiente foi reduzida, o aprendizado com os animais enviados para tratamento é de grande importância para casos de reabilitação futuros. \u0000Palavras-chaves: Encalhes, Cetáceos, Reabilitação, Conservação, Monitoramento.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130887079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the mouth of this river is located the Itajaí-Açú estuary, which is a highly stratified estuary, dominated mainly by river discharge. The port of Itajaí is located at the mouth of this estuary, one of the most important ports in the country's south. Due to the presence of the port, the Itajaí-Açú estuary is constantly dredged. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to analyse the effects of the dredging of 2011, which deepened the channel from 11m to 14m, on the estuary circulation of the Itajaí-Açú river in comparison to the estuary circulation in 2008. Thus, data on river discharge, recorded by a hydrometric station, and current velocity vertical profiles, recorded by an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) anchored in the channel of the estuary were analysed. A salinity analysis was also performed with data recorded by a CTD to compare the salinity stratification of the water column in the study period. Results showed an increase in current velocity in the estuary after the 2011 dredging. In both study periods (2008 and 2011), currents were ebb-directed. Results suggest that the dredging has modified the estuarine circulation as the currents intensified. Salinity results show an increase in values after the dredging (2011), being the water column clearly stratified.","PeriodicalId":410031,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology","volume":"271 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132633227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The curation process involved since the preparation of the preserving liquid and bottles to the choice and identification of the specimens. It was chosen to keep the collection stored in a humid way, in 80% vol. alcohol and 5% glycerin. A total of 562 beaks, from 50 taxa from different sources along the Brazilian coast, were identified from stomach contents of predators, scientific collections and commercial fishing.
