Lončar","doi":"10.15378/1848-9540.2019.42.08","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15378/1848-9540.2019.42.08","url":null,"abstract":"This paper investigates the links between architecture and its social purpose and focuses specifically on the building and institution known today as the Public Open University Zagreb (Pučko otvoreno učilište Zagreb – POUZ), which was previously called Moša Pijade Workers' (and People's) University (Radničko (i narodno) sveučilište \"Moša Pijade\" – RANS). The paper examines the innovative and experimental nature of the architectural concept of socially engaged architecture as part of the societal modernisation of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as changes to its function up to the present post-socialist condition. The authors discuss the complex relationship between employees, beneficiaries, programmes and the architectural design and the political, economic and social context. The aim is to explore sociocultural categories and how culture, work, education and the city interacted with one another during different time periods. Ethnographies of Exercising Rights","authors":"Rahela Jurković","doi":"10.15378/1848-9540.2018.41.02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15378/1848-9540.2018.41.02","url":null,"abstract":"Refugees who are beneficiaries of international protection in Croatia are granted rights, the implementation of which is discussed in this article, based on qualitative research methods conducted between February 2015 and September 2017. The article discusses how these granted rights are exercised by individuals – persons who have been granted asylum in Croatia. The research is based on an ethnography of the particular, involving participant observation and open and semi-structured interviews with refugees and representatives of institutions and organizations involved in integration. The main Croatian legislative act valid during the research period was partially implemented. Its implementation was the most problematic in an area that refugees consider as essential for integration: the provision of state-supported Croatian language courses. Other problematic areas for exercising rights were access to healthcare and to the education system. The article also compares the research findings with the results of migrants’ and refugee studies completed in (mostly) Western European countries. Cilj je istražiti izazove s kojima se poljoprivrednici susrecu u radu i svakodnevnom životu, utvrditi potencijale za razvoj te ponuditi razvojne smjerove ruralne lokalne zajednice u Gradu Dubrovniku. Empirijsko je istraživanje provedeno metodom ankete i polustrukturiranog intervjua među pedeset tri poljoprivrednika/ce u svibnju 2016. godine u selima i drugim naseljima u ruralnom prostoru koja pripadaju Dubrovniku. Utvrđena su tri komplementarna razvojna smjera: diversifikacija ruralnih djelatnosti koja je povezana s konkuriranjem za fondove Europske unije, osnivanje zadruga i razvoj zadružnog nacina suradnje te prelazak na ekolosku poljoprivrednu proizvodnju. U analizi se kriticki sagledavaju razvojne prepreke u svim trima aspektima razvoja te se predlaže kako bi se razvojni potencijali mogli upotrijebiti na dobrobit lokalne zajednice. The first part outlines the broader context of how the idea of nomination came about, along with a re-examination of how the public perceives the term heritage in Croatia, and the elements by which farmers’ markets – the perception of which has an unavoidable material aspect (space, goods, money) – are recognized as intangible heritage. This is followed by a critical look at the central points of inclusivity in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage: the variety of ways in which heritage can exist and the forms through which it can manifest itself, as well as the central role this document assigns to communities as the creators and guardians of heritage. Based on this, the last part consists of an analysis of the application for including trading at farmers’ markets in the national list.
