Both natural sciences and medical science took advantage of this medium in order to teach complex issues in a more simple way: Processes usually difficult to observe became visible, just as various motions could be shown at higher or slower speed. As a cultural heritage, didactic films are very valuable for scientific research and institutions with teaching purposes. But how can traditional analog film footage be handled without risking damage? The German Museum of the History of Medicine in Ingolstadt may give one possible answer with the outcome of an interdisciplinary project. The result should serve as a guidance for the best practice in dealing with analog film in medical collections.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89320453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How did teachers and students relate to the tradition of medical texts? Historians have addressed these questions mainly through research on printed sources. This article uses student notes as a window on medical training in action in Montpellier. The student was Francois Boissier de Sauvages; the teacher, Jacques Lazerme. The notes record Lazerme lecturing in the form of commentary on the first 14 Hippocratic Aphorisms and setting quite different emphases from those of earlier commentators: professional ethics and how to handle a case (on aphorism 1), moderation in bloodletting (on 2), disease classification (on 4-6), similarity of symptoms among different diseases (on 7), treating fever (on 8-10), periodicity of disease (on 11), weather and disease (on 12), “calor innatus” and oscillations in the circulation of the blood, with reference to Isaac Newton (on 14). These commentaries allow a fresh look at medical training between theory and practice.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81387238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By the help of analyses of petitions (complaints and hints) of the citizens conducted by the Ministry of Health of the GDR it is possible to gain a survey about the critiques and expectations in this field that were submitted to the GDR authorities. They form a comprehensive and significant source for the understanding of the GDR health care system, individual and social values as well as institutional reactions and strategies to handle problems. Surprisingly, critiques about the behaviour of the medical staff ranked almost equally to complaints about material deficits. Based on an elaborate system of evaluation these petitions served as an instrument of citizens of \"direct democracy\" that caused critical reflection of the government and influenced its perception and action. On the other hand the critique concerning the health care system individualized the protests, prevented a collective movement and generally only caused corrections of details.</p>","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"51 4","pages":"327-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"36175154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
