In light of the theories of quality assessment proposed by scholars such as Toury and House, this paper seeks to lay the groundwork for the construction of a systematic model for literary translation review, in specific hope to provide a solution to the chronic issue of exaggerated foreignization in Mandarin translation of English works. It begins by reviewing and evaluating the theories of ‘equivalence’ as well as ‘targetoriented’ and ‘source-oriented’ translation proposed by major theorists over time, and then on such basis, stating its own methodology which combines descriptive and register analysis. This paper then bases its discussion and paradigm building on Alice Walker’s short story, Everyday Use. It proposes, after a thorough case study, a possible solution to the above-mentioned problem: lexical chunk theory. The paper closes by providing an overview of the theoretical initiations embedded in it and pointing to new directions of further investigation.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126200932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most paramount is “face”. However, individuals from different cultural backgrounds possess different understandings of face. This paper analyzes the differences between Chinese and Western seating etiquette by comparing Chinese and Western banquet seating arrangements, with The Dream of Red Mansions and Downton Abbey as the text research material. The paper also explores the underlying reasons from the perspective of positive face vs. negative face and collective face vs. individual face, combining Brown and Levinson’s Face Threatening Act (FTA) and Face Saving Theory (FST) in politeness principle. According to the analysis, the Chinese regard “respect for elders” and “distance between superiors and inferiors” as seating standards, adopting positive politeness strategy to maintain collective face, while the westerner emphasize “lady first” and “equality and mutual benefits”, adopting negative politeness strategy to maintain individual face. Understanding the differences between Chinese and Western etiquette is conducive to the exchange and integration of different nationalities and the elimination of barriers in cross-cultural communication.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127548619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ancient Chinese mythology is deeply rooted in China's long-standing cultural soil. It is a unique myth that grew up in China, and it permeates the light of oriental wisdom. Purposefully and selectively inheriting the precious spiritual cultural heritage in mythology has positive practical significance for us. The content of ancient Chinese myths is rich and allencompassing. The main feature is that it advocates reason and morality, and emphasizes ethics. It conveys the spirit of dedication, fighting and struggle of the primitive people in the confrontation with the natural and social environment. This kind of spirit allows people to draw strength and courage from it, so that human beings can go through all kinds of difficulties and come to today with a smile. This paper mainly uses the method of literature analysis to excavate and sort out the salient features of the concept of rationality in ancient Chinese mythology, try to judge and reflect on ancient mythology with today's value and vision, and provide theoretical and practical support for the promotion of our country's traditional culture and national spirit and historical references.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"2009 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125640476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper mainly reviews the existing empirical studies to investigate how different task types employed can lead to the application of various CSs by L2 learners. The existing literatures are reviewed under the scope of three periods: the initial attempts, further investigation and recent studies. It is found that existing research has demonstrated well that both the frequency and the type of CSs are influenced by the tasks under completion. Albeit more systematic and rigorous studies are still called for to further support the findings of some studies and further CS research from newer and broader perspectives are still needed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings for SLA in English as second language (ESL) classrooms.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"118 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129228831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Linguists have made great efforts to analyze the structure of abstracts by using genre analysis. However, there have been little quantitative studies to compare Chinese scholars RA’s English abstract with that of the native speakers in the field of aeronautics. In particular, few studies have focused on analyzing them by means of combing the theory of genre analysis and thematic progression. This study analyzed the move structure and thematic progression pattern of 60 English abstracts selected from two aeronautics journals respectively (AIAA, CJA). Of the 60 English abstracts, 30 are written by Chinese scholars and 30 by native speakers. The results show that the frequency, order of moves, and the choice of thematic progression patterns in each move differ a lot in the two corpora. This study will not only enrich the empirical study of abstract analysis but also have some implications for academic paper writing, publishing, and teaching.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127582185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For Sanmao, writing constitutes her unique life form. Sanmao's literary creation style has a very high literary research value, which is closely related to her innate personality, as well as her understanding of life itself and her unique literary interpretation skills. To be precise, Sanmao does not have the serious creative mission of a pure literary writer, nor will it deliberately pursue the social effectiveness of her works.
