This study employed content analysis and corpus analysis to explore the representation of different types of culture in the textbook, New Era Mingde College English- Integrated Coursebook 1, and to explore whether the cultural representation follows the requirements of the construction of courses with morality cultivation. Data analysis was conducted based on the two classifications of cultures focusing on the countries and forms of cultural representation. The results mainly indicated that 1) though the target culture was the most dominant, the percentage of Chinese culture was greatly improved compared with previous studies, and the international culture was represented the least in the examined textbooks; 2)As for cultural categories, the representation of cultural persons was the most, followed by cultural communities and products, and cultural perspectives and practices were represented the least in of textbook; 3)The cultural content of this textbook generally followed the requirements of textbook compilation under the construction of courses with morality cultivation. Based on the findings, suggestions for further study and the construction of English textbooks in the future were put forward.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123977629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review systematically summarizes the findings of 27 studies from 23 articles on this topic from the last decade, with participants’ ages ranging from 18 to 60. We extracted data on participants’ backgrounds and the results of different task paradigms. We found no significant bilingual advantage in executive functions in healthy adults between 18 and 60 years of age, although the conflicting results make it challenging to draw a decisive conclusion.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116477265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, although it is widely used in China to deal with long sentences, it is still worth investigating whether it can be an effective strategy for Chinese-English intermediate learners. In addition, different methods used for segmenting also deserve to be studied. In this study, two English-speaking graduates and four Chinese- English learners are presented with nine long sentences within three different conditions (non-adjustable, segmenting different phrases with a backslash, and putting different phrases into different lines) and under each sentence there is a statement of correct or incorrect judgment. According to the results, the presegmented strategy increases the comprehension for Chinese- English intermediate learners and putting different phrases into different lines is most useful.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121589035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper applies focalization to the female relationships in The Great Gatsby and Family, specifically those arising from a romantic relationship with the same male, as examples to explore the different characteristics of female relationships under different types of focalization. The study finds that The Great Gatsby uses the narrative with internal focalization in which the female relationships are presented as competitive, whereas in Family a combination of the narrative with internal focalization and the narrative with zero focalization is used in which the female relationships are presented as harmonious co-existence. The difference in female relationships is due to the different contexts of the works, the main themes of the works and the influence of the author’s experiences.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132611563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His inaugural address could be considered as a good text to do some researches. Critical discourse analysis is an objective method to analyze some texts, but it usually cannot be used alone. The purpose of this research is to explore the levels of context culture among people in China of different ages and genders and whether context culture should be considered as part of the cultural dimension. The respondents were 385 people aged 20 to 40 in China, and the study was quantitative, using independent sample tests to answer research questions. This research shows that China is a high context culture country, and the women have higher context culture than men. In addition, context culture differs significantly in age groups, and the level of context culture increases with age. Therefore, context culture can be considered as a new cultural dimension, and it is also suggested to add this new dimension to Hofstede's cultural dimensions model to examine culture more comprehensively.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122673900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper not only studies native Hong Kong people’s attitude towards this variety, but also their English pronunciation under the influence of a rising American English (“AmE”) environment (L3 affecting L2) and their mother tongue (L1 affecting L2). 14 post- secondary students from various colleges in Hong Kong were investigated. Their data displayed many AmE features including postvocalic [ɹ], and Hong Kong English (HKE) features such as simplification of consonant cluster and deletion of final consonant. Most of the previous studies on the novel focused on its narrative angle and theatricality. This paper adopts the foregrounding analysis framework of functional stylistics to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the parallelism and deflection features of foregrounding in Miss Brill at the phonological level, the graphological level, the lexical-grammatical level, and the semantic level. This paper finds that: in Miss Brill, the foregrounding features at the phonological level are the use of alliteration and coda; the foregrounding features at the graphological level are the parallelism of punctuation; the foregrounding features at the lexical-grammatical level are manifested in the widespread use of material and mental processes, the emergence of high-value, median-value, and low-value modalities, and the extensive use of marked themes; the foregrounding features at the semantic level are parallel means of connection. These foregrounding methods can better reflect the ideational function, interpersonal function, and textual function of the text, and at the same time, they can also highlight Miss Brill’s tragic living state and her escapist psychological state to readers. By analyzing the foregrounding features of Miss Brill at various language levels and their stylistic effects, this paper vividly displays the story, helps readers understand the language features of the novel, and enhances their comprehension of the topic of the story. Thereby, the readers’ ability to appreciate such novels can be improved, and a new research perspective is provided for the analysis of foregrounding in novels.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125375845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, this study engages in a critical discourse analysis examining the social representation of America and Iran in the coverage from two American online newspapers, namely The New York Times (NYT) and The New York Post (NYP). Since the United States has incited decades of simmering conflict with Iran that involves a global concern, this study also illustrates the polarisation of ideologisation in the coverage in relation to the two newspapers’ political leanings. The findings disclose a disparity of representation of social agents and ideological bias between the two news outlets, with the NYT presenting a balance of positive and negative ‘Us’, while the NYP exhibiting a prejudiced and one-sided ideology towards Iran. Consequently, this study sheds light on the critical role of news framing and highlights academically a systematic analysis of online news coverage considering their political dependency.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127618108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
