With the increasing number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country, the clashes are becoming potentially dangerous as the Boko-Haram insurgency in North-Eastern Nigeria. Benue State is one of the States in the country that has suffered traumatic attacks from herdsmen with attendant high death toll and large-scale destruction of farmlands, environmental degradation, and pollution caused by open rearing and grazing of livestock. To stem farmers-herders’ clashes, the Benue State government enacted the ‘Open-Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, 2017. This paper assesses the efficacy of the Anti-Open Grazing Law in enhancing peace-building in the State. Anchored on the theory of structural functionalism, the paper relies on documentary sources for the generation of data. The study found out that the law brought momentary peace to the State but it failed to realize its objectives as no ranches were established; and the herdsmen continued to use the border areas with the neighboring states to launch attacks and make incursions into the State to graze in opposition to the law.  Amongst other suggestions, the paper recommends that, states adjoining each other should synergize and enact similar law to ward off the threat of herdsmen; government; civil society groups and private investors should collaborate and set up ranches.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125109576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The secession worsened relations between the West and Russia thereby, threatening international peace and security. This paper looks at the secession of Crimea from Ukraine from an international law perspective. The goal of the paper is to examine whether Crimea’s secession from Ukraine was legal or illegal under international law. This paper argues that the secession of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and its subsequent incorporation into Russia is illegal under international law because Russia intervened in Crimea. On the one hand, the findings of this paper support my central thesis/ argument. On the other hand, the findings of this study revealed that proponents of Crimea’s secession from Ukraine like Russia argue that the secession of Crimea is legal under international law because of international laws on self –determination and because Crimea’s secession from Ukraine is similar to Kosovo’s secession from Serbia.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114563428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, it has promoted the difference between developed and developing countries. African nations are described as developing economies and continually spoon-fed by the developed western nations. While the scramble for and partition of African nations is no longer about the physical presence and dominance of the countries by the 'developed' nations, global politics in foreign aids are engaged to perpetuate control and dictate governance and policies to African nations. Foreign aids support African nations' security, economic, environmental, social, and political development.  Foreign aids are not limited to cash but could come in technical and operational support, including capacity buildings and long-term loans. However, history has shown the craving and determination of most African nations to receive cash donations or loans for nations' development. Most of these monies have also lubricated corruption as funds meant for the nations’ socio-economic development ended up in bank accounts of most political officeholders. The situation has plunged many African nations into huge debts, thereby overtly submissive to the dictates and controls of countries in the western world. Aware of this, many of these foreign countries have exploited many African nations of massive mineral and other natural resources, determined to keep the giver-taker relationship's status-quo. Foreign aids are two-edged swords with both positive and negative impacts. Many papers have reviewed these impacts on national development with the people's well-being and the foreign dominance attributes of these aids. This paper looks at the trajectory of foreign aids, security, leadership, and development.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133365448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high level of infrastructural deficit with its concomitant effect on socio-economic development in Nigeria has made the government search for an alternative means of providing infrastructure for the teeming population, and not only that, but there is also the problem of inadequate resources on the part of the government as well as the penchant of some public officials to divert public fund to private pockets. All these factors made the federal government of Nigeria to adopt the public-private partnership model to provide infrastructure development for the use of the people. It is expected that when there is a high level of infrastructural development in the country, there would be an increase in economic activities amongst the populace, which would invariably contribute positively to their well being. This paper is qualitative in nature, and data for the study were sourced through secondary means. The paper adopts the analytic/descriptive method of data analysis. The Stakeholder Theory was used as the theoretical framework. The paper recommends that an adequate legal framework be put in place in the implementation of public-private partnership projects to guide against abandonment when there is a leadership change in the country.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132076876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study provides a global perspective of media systems and operations and narrows it down to Nigeria. The researchers also examined the models of media systems and operations. Consequently, three models were identified. They are the polarised pluralist, the democratic corporatist and the liberal models. The researchers also examined the normative theories of the press that provides theoretical explanations on the relationship between the press and the government and how this affect the operations of the media. Therefore, the six theories examined were authoritative theory, the soviet communist theory, the libertarian theory, the social responsibility theory, the development media theory, and the democratic participants’ theory. The researcher links these models and theories of media systems and operations in Nigeria’s democracy and argues that Nigeria is currently practicing the liberal model with a combination of libertarian and social responsibility. It is recommended that further empirical studies should be examined to ascertain journalists’ views on the media systems and operations in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122658825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A questionnaire was applied as the tool for collecting primary data for the study. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using the Quantile regression technique. Findings showed that household investment as a component of permanent income is a negative function of household consumption expenditure. While pension funds return as a component of household permanent income was seen to be a positive function of consumption expenditure. Meaning that an increase in pension funds returns would yield a positive but insignificant increase in consumption expenditure for the households in all income groups in the Bayelsa State. The study conclude that permanent income does not significantly determine the consumption expenditure of the households in the different income groups in Bayelsa State. It is however recommended that Bayelsan, especially those who are actively employed be properly enlightened to invest their funds in pension scheme by the State government and other NGOs.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122780296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two   newspapers- The Daily Trust and the Daily Sun-were purposively selected for the study. The study duration was 24 months while content analysis was adopted as the   study   design. Result showed, among others, that the frequency of coverage of gender violence by the two newspapers within the study duration is 43%. Result of this study further revealed that 24.4% of the stories from the two newspapers on gender violence within the study duration were on front page, 31.1% 32.2% and 12.2% were on inside page, back page and centre spread in that order. The result of this study has implications on the quest to reduce cases of gender based violence in Nigeria  as it provides  evidence on the how  The Daily Trust and The Daily Sun in  particular and Nigerian newspapers in general have contributed against the fight  against violence against persons on the basis of their gender.  Based on the result of this study, the researcher recommends, among others that, Nigerian newspapers should improve in their coverage of gender violence with a view   to promoting a gender violence free society.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125509784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, for the first time in Russian classical literature, the main character of a great realist work is an Eastern Man, a Muslim, a Mountaineer and a Tatar. The main subject of Tolstoy's research on history and art is the fate of Hadji Murat, one of the leaders of the mountain peoples' liberation movement. Hadji Murat is more than a historical figure, he is a legend of his time. For 20 years, he fought relentlessly with Russian troops, who were much stronger, professional and equipped than himself. He surprised everyone with his daring raids, his bravery and legendary invincibility. It is very important how the author of \"Hadji Murat\" comprehends the world of people from a different culture. One of the most important indicators of this is the author's skilful use of folkloric and religious materials that constitute the basic dynamics of the people. The article tackles this issue fundamentally. Muslim and pagan values are strangely intertwined under the consciousness of the protagonist of the novella, and although they complement each other in some ways, they fundamentally contradict each other. In this novella written by Tolstoy, Hadji Murat is shown as a religious person. Various artistic and folkloric functions take place in the novella. Aphorisms, proverbs, concise expressions, idioms, tales and folk songs about mountains and mountain dwellers helped the author reproduce the national consistency and priorities of the national cultural paradigm.","PeriodicalId":405920,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132800935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The EU has been developing stronger cooperation and partnership with African countries. The relations between the former and latter has followed a trajectory shaped by historical factors. The national interest of the EU members and changing dynamics of politics and economics are the drivers of this historical evolution. On the other hand, the research is revealing a particular set of reasons responsible for the changes in the EU’s approach to Africa.
