This paper explores how under utilizied churches in the northern Rheine-Westphalia region of Germany have converted into Grabeskirche, which has offered the spaces a new life and an economic return to its parishes. Looking closely at the conversion of five Churches into Grabeskirche; St. Joseph in Aachen, St. Bartholomaus outside of Koln, Namen-Jesu-Kirche in Bonn, St. Elizabeth in the outskirts of Monchegadblach and St. Josef close to Monchengladbach, the case studies will reveal how the separation of cemeterial rites, functions and rituals can once again join the liturgical space of a Church. Finding ways to incorporate the already meaningful habits that are present in our human cultures and to make them part of our design practices seems to be crucial to allow inhabitants to belong and even make sense of their personal lives. Architecture is not “the aesthetic object” since it speaks both at pre-reflective and symbolic levels. The pressing challenge is to destabilize the neat division of architecture into separate bodies of knowledge and pose the architect’s mode of action on the threshold between the concrete and the universal. Architecture is a lens, an instrument one looks through to bring new perspectives into focus, enabling the transformation of experience from a magnified self-concentrated space to a wide horizon. Architecture narrates relations between spaces and examines its validity through signifying practices of design. Design for itself becomes the language of the current, of the immediate fashion. Which could be the possibilities and potentialities to treat this local resource. 3. How local authorities could start a project of exploitation and valorization of the water region. 4. Which interventions could enforce the dynamics of the region. 5. How to articulate cities in discontinuity around the Yonne river, taking into account the flood threat, but in a sustainable way. 6. Construction professionals and other experts i.e. in academia agree widely that this is essential. Construction business and its operations in general have not been isolated from the long term developments in different sectors such as outsourcing where core businesses is valued high and other operations are cut away. This has resulted in high number of specialized companies that on the other hand has increased the total number of partners in any kind of construction project. From the management viewpoint this is a different challenge and it has naturally provided the starting point for new kind of managerial tools and solutions. Govada","doi":"10.6092/ISSN.2036-1602/3712","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6092/ISSN.2036-1602/3712","url":null,"abstract":"This contribution reflects on first experiences made with a newly launched Master of Science in Urban Design program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As an important part of this program, students have to develop their design proposal in response to feedback of different stakeholders and community members. Thus the program responds to the growing aspiration of Hong Kong’s citizens to shape the urban development of their city and a lack of a meaningful participation process in the region. With its high density, protected country parks, efficient public transport and large scale housing program, generally, Hong Kong offers important lessons for contemporary urbanism. However, since the end of the British colonial rule and in face of increasing property prices, pollution and the disappearance of local heritage, intensive debates started about the regions future. Another central point of the recent discussion in Hong Kong – and key theme of the new urban design program - is the demand for the rights and qualities of public space. The paper presents the set-up of the design studio, which was closely linked to a course on “urban processes”. During the semester, students had to organize community forums and street exhibitions in a specific district, invite stakeholders and residents and discuss with them their ideas. Their projects, then, had to respond on the various feedbacks and integrate them in their design and policy proposals. The text reflects on the student projects and the lessons learned in the process. It addresses general questions such as the challenges in communicating with a diverse community (e.g. language barriers and culturally different ideas of public space). It addresses the question of the intended and unintended effects of a participatory design studio in the community, and possible follow-ups. This text aims to outline the actual situation of the debate on theory of architecture and it quotes the most important essays through which phenomenology has given a fundamental contribution to architecture. It also points out the main issues the technological progress causes in relation to the process of design and in relation to the personality of the architect itself. In fact the existing building structure is a constraint to project site layout organisation. So rehabilitation projects may need a major effort in safety design, due to new hazards and difficulties in standardization of building operations. The Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach can make a breakthrough for the rehabilitation construction project safety design because of construction phases simulation and visualization.
