This case study highlights the complex relationship among communicators who designed PCS Phosphate's activist website advocating for the mine expansion, regulatory writers at the EPA who deemed the mine expansion a threat to the environment, and technical communicators who assisted in drafting the reports produced by the Army Corps of Engineers that ultimately decided the fate of the mine expansion. Since PCS Phosphate did receive their mining permit, this paper provides best practices to designing a corporate activist website based on the seemingly successful activist website of PCS. This paper explores how technical communicators can find themselves on different sides of the environmental sustainability debate.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128853461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sustainability is at the forefront of societal issues, especially for health and well-being which rely on integrated data services. For the pervasive user to successfully engage in the use of data services, training is needed to conceptualize use and establish the necessary level of mobile literacy for the task. This paper introduces web-based training designed for pervasive users who need to conceptualize both connectivity challenges and energy conservation techniques for effective mobile communication. Our strategies are based on empirical research that measures mobile ICT literacy from a sample of 300 responses with the 160 character constrained communication of SMS text messaging. Mobile ICT literacy is an important aspect of effective communication with the ongoing deployments of social media and mobile technologies and should include training on connectivity for environmental sustainability and communication best practices.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114808110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The name stands for \"Self Navigation Web-Based Literacy Learning System\". The students, the users of the system, have developed it in a seminar style course under the supervision of the authors. Through abundant discussions from diverse aspects, they decided to introduce an e-learning platform with an online textbook and online quiz for the study part, a forum and avatars for communication, and multiplayer quiz battles and rankings for competition among students. Students read the textbook and then do the quizzes to check if they have understood the text. To keep the motivation high, we introduced the quiz battles. When a student wins the battle, he earns 10 snowballs (points). Snowballs are also awarded for good participation in the forum, and for correct answers in individual quiz trials. Students appear as avatars and can choose a nickname in the system, so they do not have to show their actual identity. We believe that this will take away the hesitation to interact with one's peers in a second language. The avatars can be customized by shopping for clothes using the snowballs earned through the quiz-solving, quiz-battle, or communication in forum. Students not only designed or decided what features the platform should have, they also made the content by themselves. They wrote textbooks and made quizzes on the essential fields of engineering. Through close collaboration between teachers and students from several departments during the development of SNOWBALLS, there still is a constant flow of new ideas, improvements and feedback on both the educational content and the system.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121123937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They provide information about environmental impact/sustainability, nutrition, health, safety, the quality and suitability of consumer goods, and other domains. Design patterns are expanded guidelines that follow a problem-solution structure, provide more context than standard guidelines, and are supported when possible by citations to relevant research and professional literature. Pattern libraries are sets of coordinated patterns that strive to comprehensively support the design process in a particular domain. Pattern libraries have proven successful and are now used in such domains as urban planning, object-oriented programming, software user interface design, and web design. LabelPatterns.org is a newly launched website currently hosting over 75 design patterns that support the design of consumer-decision labels. It also offers other kinds of information about these labels and related messaging. The patterns and the website were begun as student projects in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington, USA. It is now being managed and expanded by a volunteer project team.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"523 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116544785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This creates the possibility of creating interfaces that are technically sound but weak in content. Addressing audience, in addition to form and content brings the potential to bridge the divide between form and content. The factor of audience, while considered from different perspectives in the technical sub-discipline of computer science known as Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and traditional composition courses, the blend of this instruction for engineers often leads to complication. Attention to audience in an engineering curriculum has shown to improve the resulting interfaces designed by students. Even though instruction in audience consideration provides for interface design that may not always successfully address the difficulties associated with the form content binary, classroom experience indicates that has reasonable potential to bridge this disconnect.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134253360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also a social practice that is frequently used by Japanese managers to further their leadership agendas. In order to understand this form of professional communication in Japan more fully in the context of professional management, a survey of 30 Japanese leaders in different fields was conducted to see how this cultural phenomenon is currently viewed and practiced. From this information, a list of best practices was generated that the will be of interest to managers everywhere, as well as to educators and researchers who would like to investigate this type of managerial communication further.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133401355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social software supports a kind of interstitial organizational writing practice, where knowledge workers publicly enact both personal and organizational discourses that foster and help sustain both personal and professional relationships. This paper details findings from two qualitative studies of social software as organizational, public writing work, exploring the role of microblogging in seeding knowledge assets and extending organizational relationships. I argue based on findings from these studies that informal communication via public, interstitial writing practices plays an important role in fostering the distribution and sustainability of organizational knowledge work.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115501834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our broadest goal is to incubate new ways of talking about and representing sustainability, such that individuals and institutions are motivated to act and cooperate. We do this by working in two areas: 1) in our inaugural year we sponsored two sustainability scholars who carried out ambitious research projects exploring some intersection of the Stanford campus and sustainability 2) we run a blog, SUSSing Sustainability @ Stanford that is an expansive forum for undergraduate writing, art, and projects pertaining to sustainability. This essay details the evolution of the SUSS program and describes a model for supporting undergraduates to reflect on, synthesize and communicate about sustainability-related issues. SUSS is sponsored by an undergraduate writing program; this is critical because many challenges of sustainability will be solved not only through science and policy, but also through writing, communication, and rhetoric. SUSS helps students develop rhetorical and communicative skills to become ambassadors and coalition builders for sustainability, on campus and beyond.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115849205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different assignments and methods are used to “infuse” our writing curriculum with sustainability principles. Building on the work of composition theorists and practitioners―including Derek Owen, Dobrin and Weisser, and Goggin and Waggoner — my UCSB Writing colleagues and I have modified the curriculum in engineering, business, and professional writing courses at the lower-division and upper-division levels. Our curriculum asks students to research, analyze, write, and reflect on the concepts and practices of sustainability. Often the combination of “service learning” with sustainability issues helps to provide situations that encourage students to author very practical documents — newsletters, design proposals, project proposals, business plans, and brochures. The paper provides evidence that — for students, faculty and staff, and external community “clients” — writing teaching and learning can contribute to improving our world by addressing sustainability issues.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125008898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
