An “integrative literature review is a form of research that reviews, critiques, and synthesizes representative literature on a topic in an integrated way such that new frameworks and perspectives on the topic are generated” (Torraco, 2005, p. 356) This workshop first explains why integrative literature reviews are becoming increasingly popular in research circles, then contrasts integrative literature reviews with meta-analyses, meta-syntheses and other related forms of advanced literature reviews, as well as with more traditional literature reviews. Next, this workshop describes methodological considerations for finding, including, and excluding studies; processes for reviewing and classifying the literature, analyzing the resulting data, and the four types of findings that typical integrative literature reviews typically report. The workshop closes by directing participants to samples of integrative literature reviews and identifying considerations for submitting these reviews to peer-reviewed publications. To guide participants through this experience, this workshop is built around a sample literature review project. Participants will practice the skills taught by applying them to the sample project. For example, to illustrate methodological considerations, participants will identify characteristics for including and excluding studies in a search and, later, will receive a sample list of studies to determine whether or not to actually include them in the review.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132603284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using mountaintop removal as a case study, this paper outlines the means by which geospatial technologies can be used to contest official and industry claims of sustainability while also offering alternative understandings of sustainability. This paper also advances a call to recognize the significance of the “spatial turn” to communication studies and to develop a line of inquiry that responds to the growing use of interactive geospatial and visualization technologies.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124039063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its best intentions, however, the TBL fails to resolve central tensions between the economic bottom line and environmental and social priorities, resulting in a fatally flawed model. The TBL inherently privileges economic accounting, which is reliably measurable, over social and environmental accounting, which are more complicated and contestable.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122348757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The EIS is a rhetorical document, in part, because the rhetor chooses information necessary to support a proposed course of action. Using Burke's pentad, I demonstrate that the purpose-act ratio is the dominant scenario in EIS documents issued by the U.S. military to justify proposals for training. I show that one EIS document was specifically structured around this purpose-act scenario to support a proposal for military training. I conclude by suggesting that the EIS process may be representative of instrumental writing, global issues may result in policies that impact local environments, and the EIS process may actually preclude social action and document persuasiveness.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125800151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These methods require no specialized technology infrastructure or investment beyond three generic categories of free and open-source software (text editors, web browsers, and web browser add-ons) that provide students with equitable technology access in- and outside of the classroom. Through these methods, writers develop a more comprehensive knowledge of the complex issues of web design and development that Adobe Dreamweaver and other software are designed to obscure. Partially a response to the limitations and professional de-skilling inherent in those types of software and certain content management systems, this workshop presents web design and development methods that are sustainable, in that the methods are based in languages written at the source level, and not the arbitrary, shifting design of software interfaces. The workshop also offers evidence of how these methods and the principles behind them can extend to courses beyond web design to shape digital design and development throughout writing and communication curricula.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126943807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In one extreme are people that believe humans have not, nor can they, do anything to the earth that will jeopardize its future. The other extreme blames humanity for all of earth's woes: global warming, melting ice caps, dying species, etc. In between these two extremes are a mass of people that are not sure what to believe. Environmental sites, therefore, want to encourage activism and promote their message in the most effective way possible. The purpose of this study will be to look at these environmental sites and determine • The intended message of the site • The intended design theme • If the intended message and design theme are well matched A well-designed site will have a design theme that matches the intended message of the prose. This alignment of design and information will create the best experience for the viewer, and would drive the environmental sites purposes further. This paper will use a model of visual form/visual purpose connections based on the semiotic of C.S. Peirce. This paper will take his approach and apply it to environmental web site design and report on the effectiveness of these site's overall design purposes.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121525760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frances Burney's Evelina is an especially apt examination of this technology of politeness. Using Evelina as our example, we argue that, ultimately, there is no absolute boundary between dealing with the complexities of a literary text and considering modern professional texts such as workplace email.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"299 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116879368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
