Canada, while closely linked to the United States economically, remained somewhat protected although it, too, experienced a housing bubble. Investment services company Edward Jones issued a report on the housing bubble, warning real estate investors to prepare for the possible impact of a housing economic downturn. While Edward Jones was not the first to warn of a possible housing bubble collapse, since being made public on 27 August 2010 the report is one of the most widely cited in the popular press. This paper looks at targeted economic information communication through the lens of the Edward Jones report, and will be of particular interest to those professional communicators and others involved in developing, and communicating, sustainable economic policy.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133981166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses mainly on three questions: first, what are intrinsic and extrinsic archival qualities; second, what conceptual framework can integrate and structure various dimensions of intrinsic and extrinsic qualities of archival documents; third, which indicators and variables should be tested to verify the measurability of these qualities. After developing a conceptual framework distinguishing four dimensions of quality of archives, a quantitative and descriptive study was conducted to confirm the measurability of fourteen variables of two of these four dimensions that were measured: the credible evidence as an intrinsic dimension example and the exploitability as an extrinsic dimension example.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129233398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an important and growing area of research because mobile phone users in the developing world represent 73% of global subscriptions, and, of the 796 million people around the world who cannot read or write, 98% live in the developing countries. Mobile phones offer low-literate people critical access to information and services. By understanding how these people currently use mobile phones, we can develop better ways to meet their needs. To learn what research has been done in this area, we conducted a systematic literature review to identify good-quality, evidence-based studies that included design recommendations. This paper will describe the detailed selection process and characterize the corpus articles along a number of dimensions: type of use, locale of the study, domain, research methodology, and design recommendations. Then the paper will present a thematic analysis of the usages identified in those papers and discuss the related design recommendations.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"8 Suppl 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128647344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sustainability is truly a global issue; environmental concerns do not stop at national borders. In order to address complex global issues like sustainability, technical communication students need to develop global competency. The skill set associated with global competency includes knowledge of intercultural communication, respect for cultural differences, and awareness of the complex and interdependent nature of the world. Globally competent individuals are aware of the relationship between global and local events. Service-learning and global virtual team projects are effective means for facilitating the development of global competency in students. This paper describes specific projects and assignments that can be used to integrate sustainability issues into the curriculum and discusses the benefits of such projects to students, faculty, and the community.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116826790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantages and disadvantages of using a wiki to write and deliver software documentation were researched. Training modules were developed to teach the company employees effective techniques for using the company wiki to collaboratively write software user documentation. Evidence was also provided in a white paper that could be delivered to the customers to show that receiving their documentation as a wiki would be better for them than receiving traditional static hard-or soft-copy documentation. The goal of the project was to enable the employees to provide the customers with superior software documentation in the form of a wiki, which can be continuously updated and kept current as the software product evolves and eliminates the need for printing and maintaining a hard-copy library of the user documentation.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"26 9-10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121588377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disadvantaged communities are increasingly demanding access to English so that their children can join a workforce that mandates knowledge of this language. The question of mother-tongue education remains a vexed one. On the one hand, it seems reasonable and desirable that learners should be able to receive education in their mother-tongue, if they so wish. On the other hand, there are some very real difficulties involved in the implementation of this ideal. The purpose of this paper is to clarify what these difficulties are, and then to suggest what needs to be done to overcome them. The intention is neither to argue for or against the notion of mother-tongue education in the Indian and South African context, nor to consider whether its implementation is practically possible, but simply to spell out what courses of action need to be undertaken if the idea is to be seriously pursued.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130675511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author conducted a survey on the corporate web pages of SMEs in Ota City, Tokyo to see if the percentage of SMEs having their web pages in foreign languages has changed since 2007. The percentage of SMEs having a foreign language web page was larger in 2010 than the percentage found by a similar survey in 2007, and the number of web pages in English or Chinese had also increased. A result of this study shows that five percent of the SMEs which had their corporate websites only in Japanese in 2007 were put out of business or merged with other corporations, while none of the SMEs having a corporate web page in a foreign language did.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125623794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also in pharmacy education, a deep understanding of sustainability issues is required so that the future pharmacists will make a positive impact on the environment. This study examines whether Japanese university students can identify problems in an illogical essay and it evaluates the effectiveness of the problem checklist when revising the text on the sustainability of drugs. We also investigate how much knowledge the participants have about the term “sustainability.” The results of the present experiment suggest that the prior peer review training is beneficial in highlighting the problems in the essay and making revisions. The results also reveal that the problem checklist is very effective. Furthermore, the activity of reading and revising the text on “sustainability” using the peer review method as well as answering the questions about the knowledge of the term stimulate them to consider the sustainability issues. In order to spread the concept of sustainability in Japan, the topic of sustainability should be widely covered in college education.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132644303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such assumptions are neither valid nor productive. This presentation will outline a management approach to designing usability programs that are a routine part of the product development methodology, are cost effective, and help ensure user satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"12 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132971659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We applied this technique to 129 official websites for Alabama cities. Most of the sites had substantial navigation problems; for example, 91.4% failed to use a breadcrumb trail to help users recall their location within the site's organizational structure. This study has implications for developers tasked with developing a site that conveys credibility and thus attracts the attention of companies that bring jobs to and produce jobs in the city. In an article currently in preparation, we explore both our study's results and its implications in greater detail.","PeriodicalId":404833,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117175036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
